Having said that, I specifically collect vintage X-rated films on Blu-ray just because it's an area of film that really fascinates me. I'll buy literally any hardcore film from the '70s and '80s that gets released on Blu-ray, even if the hardcore scenes are inserts. There aren't that many of them, period, so it's not an extremely demanding hobby to pursue. But anyway, I was led to believe that I was getting an X-rated film here, and it's absolutely not.

There's nothing close to a penetration shot in the movie. It has only nudity.

John Lyon/Joe Rubin said that the negative of Malabimba had the hardcore material, so he says that the original intent of the film was for it to be hardcore, which is how Vinegar Syndrome released it.
Friday the 13th only has Nudity. This has goofy full frontal gyrating nudity with Magdalena giving some very explicit instructions regarding where she'd like to take Communion.

Honestly given the vulgarities, the explicit nudity, the religious themes and the time period it was made it really doesn't surprise me in the least that this would have carried an X rating in its current incarnation if it planned to play in standard theaters. Hardcore inserts would have pushed this well above and beyond what any regular theater would have been willing to run as far as I'm concerned. Though goofy, this film is still quite explicit for the time it was made.

LOL youtube-dl would have provided a higher quality rip.

Allegedly, there is a 120 minute cut of the film that was released in West Germany and Austria, but is there any evidence that multiple cuts (aside from the possibility of alternate title cards) were created for the US?
If you are restoring footage that was removed to obtain an R rating, it theoretically would make the cut X rated even if it was never released in that format. The film would have been submitted to the MPAA and they would tell the distributors they would rate it X in it's full version. The distributor can then cut stuff to make it an R rating.
The print is likely what would have received the X. The problem is that some people read the word 'hardcore' posted here and assumed penetration. Keep in mind films like Midnight Cowboy and the Killing of Sister George were rated X films. It doesn't matter if it is called X though as if it is like the Canadian VHS it definitely would have received that rating.

or

Go very very light with the coats so as not to saturate the cardboard but this should work. I'd recommend the gloss variety but Matte would likely work just as well and look fine.

Absolutely not true. There is no such thing as a 120-minute version of Magdalena. That running time is listed on IMDB and is a total error. I believe it started when some video release had that listed on the box as the running time. The version we released is the most un-cut version of the film that there is.

I doubt a film like Magdalena would have even been possible to be a 2 hour film.

I'm sure I'm in the minority, but the new slip is wonderful in its weirdness. They just don't make 'em like that anymore.

Got my Magdalena with screwy slip today. Might hold on to the slip and see if it becomes collectible and try and trade it for a movie lol.

I do have 1 small pet peeve with Magdalena. The slipcover and disc art have the Magdalena title, the cover has The Devils Female and then the disc menu and actual movie have the title Beyond The Darkness. I would have much more preferred altered artwork that used the Beyond The Darkness title for uniformity

I don't think many people associate the Beyond the Darkness title with this film, so it may not have been good from a marketing aspect.

DF should put this one out as a drive in release with another title. Linnea Quigley has a little role in it. It's on amazon prime in HD. Looks like they just threw a raw scan on there and didn't crop or anything.

I'm with you on this. I'm kind'a OCD about having the cover match the on screen title. It's not really a huge deal, if it bothers me enough, i just do my best to cobble a cover together.

It also would have sparked a lot of confusion with Joe D'Amato's more famous Beyond the Darkness (1979).

Magdalena is the title by which I have always known this movie.

This does look good. We'll check with the guru of all cult movies, Banana Man and see what we can find out about it.
