There have been scientific studies done that show males suffer from color blindness more often than females. I remember reading this at least a couple times in the last few years.

https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=...98197061,d.cWw

"Color blindness affects a significant percentage of the population."

"In individuals with Northern European ancestry, as many as 8 percent of men and 0.4 percent of women experience congenital color deficiency."

"One of the common color vision defects is red-green deficiency which is present in about 8 percent of males and 0.5 percent of females of Northern European ancestry."

I don't think it's fair to call that member insane either. We know nothing about her. People can be pretty cruel in forums. One would hope at least in a blu-ray forum members would remember to be kind to one another, since we're all here due to a common interest. Obviously I can't speak for every point she made, but a good amount of what she said is very much true.

The insanity is less about the general content and more about the fact they've typed about 7000 words purely to try and create a scientific basis for their ability to remember colors perfectly from 1981.

Well, at least that poster is literate and I can follow their posts, unlike some posters on this site and others all over the internet (not aimed at you in any way, I'm just talking in general). I'll take fully-formed words and sentences any day over broken English that I have to parse to make sense of. She may be wordy but sometimes lots of words are needed to fully explain a point.

As I mentioned in my opinion above, I think people in general don't remember precise colors very well - the average human brain just does poorly in that category. Heck, people in general make very poor witnesses in crimes for the same reason - they remember details poorly and mis-remember things. But images can make any impression on people that they will remember.

People don't remember ANYTHING very well. This person said they had both a 4th cone (rare mutation that allows for different ability to view color, in something like 2% of the female population and far, far less of the male since they need 2 x chromosomes), and that they had a photographic memory (which has never been proven to exist in any adult). OR actually, maybe some other guy said they had a photographic memory, and this person just said they had a photographic memory with certain things. Either way, they also claimed to have done advanced research on humans' abilities to remember colors from films and that this was how they knew Cronenberg was coming down with some kind of visual impairment, they said that they have 5 people in their household who all demand to watch a different edition of Snowpiercer because all of them have such amazing senses and strong personal preferences that they all need a different version, and the whole thing has just reeked of pathological liar. It's like every time they say anything, they also have some new hilariously improbable backstory to "prove" that it's true. It's nuts! I do appreciate the grammar, I suppose.

I have taken several color tests and I am not color blind. I have astigmatism in one eye, but it is corrected. My other eye is 20/15. So yeah, I can judge resolution and colors fairly well. I guess it's also a good thing that my ancestors are not from northern Europe.

http://www.color-blindness.com/2009/...lor-blindness/

"Color blindness is more prevalent among males than females, because the most common form of color vision deficiency is encoded on the X sex chromosome."

http://www.color-blindness.com/2006/...nd-population/

"Roughly 8% of men and 0.5% of women are affected. Therefore chances that your neighbour or one of your classmates is colorblind are very high."

Thankfully, my color perception is also very good so far. I'm hoping it remains that way. But close to 1 out of every 10 males is color blind. That's pretty significant.

You can take simple tests online to check for color issues with your vision. I have slight problems differentiating high-end blues, but otherwise see perfectly. It's fun to find out.

You think basic neuroscience is sexist? Do you also find it offensive that men, possessing of higher levels of testosterone, produce muscle at an accelerated rate and are, therefore, physically stronger than females, even controlling for diet, levels of exercise and muscle stimulation as well as other muscle producing substances like L-Carnitine? Is human biology really sexist to you? Let me guess, you think the sun revolves around the earth and that's the way it is and that's the way you like it. I'd tell you you've been rude here but you'd probably find that sexist as well.

Absolutely not. With that being said this is not a medical journal, a commentary on a self help book, or a movie. It is a BD forum and I also hate to break it to you, but in my experience as well as many members here, most females would be fine with VHS much less DVD or BD. Just some food for thought for your overly scientific thought process there.

I'm sorry, but I have to disagree to some degree here. While it's true that it's unlikely that viewers remember exact color tones for every scene (that would be hard to believe), it's perfectly reasonable to believe that some viewers at least remember the general tone of the film (for instance, the way Fellowship of the Rings was tinted green for the blu-ray extended edition). I'm pretty sure that even without screencaps for comparison, many people would have remembered that Gandlaf's beard and the sky itself wasn't green in the theatre. Some films make an impression on people, and that can certainly be visual - for instance, remembering how bright a film is, or how vivid the colors were or weren't. For instance, I remember seeing the new Oz film and thinking how intensely vivid the colors were in that film. I couldn't tell you exactly what tint the colors were, but I can tell you it was very, very vivid in color. If I suddenly saw a re-release and the colors were dingy and dark and it looked like the new Halloween remaster, I would certainly know that they changed something because I can remember the impression I got in the theatre when I saw it.
Good explanation. I was at a friend's the other day and he pulled out a blu-ray of Sleeping Beauty for his boy and girl. When I saw it as a child, granted on video, it was dull but seemed more dynamic. Most likely due to flaws in the transfer causing alterations in color that I perceived as tonal shifts, I saw more variation in color on the dresses of the three fairies (the colors most notable in this little cartoon) but, on his 4k screen with a Sony Blu-ray, the colors were blinding, striking, wonderful but also completely uniform. The fact that I remember something from decades ago and can point out the difference today isn't at all remarkable. When I mentioned it, every adult in the room chimed in and they all remembered that film from when they were little kids.

Also, thanks for noticing the Fellowship issue. I was playing with my settings on that one for quite a while before it occurred to me that it might be the disc.

What an odd opinion. You think my education makes me insane but you draw the line at calling me sexist.

So you're saying the colors on a VHS were more "dynamic" than the BD of the same animation?

The green tint on FOTR is not a new issue. It was noticed as soon as the extended set was released in 2011.

First, the fourth cone isn't that rare and is being found in greater and greater numbers as more and more tests are being done to chart prevalence.

Second, I stated, and will state again, that I am highly visual. I remember visual events the way some people remember conversations or numbers. It is a form of natural variation in processing that makes people different from one another, that is to say, not all copies of you.

Third, I never claimed to have personally done advanced research on whether people remember colors from films. However, I have participated in studies being done on the ability of the average human to remember words, sentence structure, emotional response, color, content of the visual field and other sensory inputs as compared to each other and to those with gifts in those different areas of processing, both as a subject and researcher (depending on which study was being done). Its called academic research and it is something many people do in the pursuit of their advanced degrees.

Fourth, I'll say again, I never diagnosed David Cronenberg with anything. I stated that I had an emotional response to seeing the Criterion edition of Scanners because what I was seeing reminded me of what happened in my father's photographs as he developed a visual impairment and, living in fear of developing that myself, worry that Cronenberg my be developing a problem similar to his.

Fifth, I did not say my family is made up of overly demanding people who all complain about their senses. I have a family made up of people, each of whom, purchased their own copy of a film we all love because they each prefer a different color or sound from the other versions in the home. Two of the versions are never watched because they turned out not to match initially published specs (on manufacturers websites and in one case YesAsia) but we are all different and do have different preferences. Not everyone is as lucky as you, to have a family made up of identical people who all think the same way.

And to close, if as you claim, you find people responding to your odd declaration that nothing anyone says they remember could possibly be what they actually remember and that you, somehow, know what they remember better than they ever could, to be so nuts and indicative of a condition of pathological lying, I turn you to the DSM IV description of malignant narcissism and suggest you consider the possibility that some people are actually different from you, as special as you surely are.

That's good. Though men suffer color blindness from all ancestries, that was just a study citing rates in Northern Europe which are similar to those around the world, with some variation depending on other demographics. But I'm glad you've been tested for all the forms of color blindness. I only got that two hour test when I agreed to participate in a study of visual processing and, after the fact, very much wished I had that two hours back. Kudos to your doctor.
