Seems to be a way the showrunners are trying to ease the audience into
[Show spoiler]Dorne
. It's a lot easier to introduce new characters through
[Show spoiler]ones the audience is already familiar with.

Yeah, solely creative addition.

I guess they could still delay the riverun storyline. I hope they are not just going to write off the blackfish/edmure stuff

I would hope not....esp. since those characters are already established.

Looks like we won't be seeing Bran and Hodor next season. Safe to assume Meera as well.

Not so eager to push into Book 6 territory after all, it would seem. Still, this doesn't preclude the possibility that we might hear Bran speaking to Theon through the Winterfell weirwood tree, as in the book.

I just finished reading A Game of Thrones for the second time, and I'm even more amazed than before at how closely the show stuck to the original book without making it seem copy/pasted to the different format. So many people excuse what Peter Jackson has done with his changes to Middle-earth because of the logistics of reworking a book for the film format(Lord of the Rings is my favorite book and also still one of my absolute favorite film trilogies), but season 1 of Game of Thrones shows how possible it is to stick quite adherently to the original source material without making it feel forced or wedged in.

Just starting A Clash of Kings for the second time now.

I like when a show or movie deviates and surprises me. The book will always belong to the author and can't be touched, but film and tv allows another person to take that material and add their own flair or ideas to the story and that's one thing I love about adaptations. Not that I wouldn't appreciate a LOTR television series that was closer to the book. I would like it a lot.

And in Jackson's defense, cinema does require a different pace. A pace that HBO's adaptations of GOT do not adhere to. It's not just about how many minutes or hours one has to tell the story. It's about moving at a certain pace and balancing exposition with action. I love HBO's GOT I truly do (and I love the books), but I wouldn't tolerate in a movie or trilogy some of the things I tolerate in this show. Such as hours of exposition and talking. GOT just wouldn't work in cinema if it adhered closely to the book. Even George knows this and has stated this. He started his writing career in television and his books have a number of tv tropes and are written in ways that were carried over from his tv days. These books were made for television, but if they ever end up on film, even if each book was made into a trilogy, there would be massive changes. It's just the nature of cinema.

Actually, no he didn't. He started his career writing science fiction short stories in the early 70s. And excellent ones at that. I urge any fan of GRRM who hasn't done so yet to find copies of his collections A Song for Lya and Other Stories, Songs of Stars and Shadows, and Sandkings. As much as I love A Song of Ice and Fire, I really miss his Manrealm universe short stories.

Anyway, it was about 15 years after that that he started writing for TV, with the mid-80s Twilight Zone revival. He was largely prompted to do that because of the commercial failure of two of his early 80s novels, Fevre Dream and The Armageddon Rag.

If you'll notice, I did say that The Lord of the Rings is my favorite book, and I also said that the film trilogy is one of my all time favorites. I was simply making an observation that after reading A Game of Thrones again for the second time, after becoming intimately familiar with season one of the show, it really amazed me at how closely the show mirrored the book without feeling 'shoe-horned' into the different medium.

Also, The Lord of the Rings books all together only total about 1200 pages, which in the extended editions of the fim came out to about 11 hours, whereas A Game of Thrones is about 800 pages which came out to about 10 hours overall, which is quite similar in that respect to LotR, although with just a bit more breathing room.

I'm not so much discounting what Peter Jackson has done with Tolkien's work, as I'm trying to validate what Benioff and Weiss has accomplished with Martin's work, without affecting the original source material very much at all, especially earlier on, which ironically feels similar to Jackson's earlier adherence to Tolkien, and gradually later on, not so much so.

I know. I meant to acknowledge that I had seen the part where you said you were a fan of both the books and the films. I failed to do that, but yeah I saw where you said that. I know you weren't trying to discount what Jackson did, and I apologize if I came across confrontational. That wasn't my intent.

It seems like comparisons (and contrasts) are so often made between Jackson's efforts on LotR and Benioff & Weiss' on GoT. It's not surprising to me, because it's always seemed to me that, despite Jackson working on his adaptation of The Hobbit, Game of Thrones has felt like the true cinematic (despite being on TV) successor to The Lord of the Rings. It has that darker adult fantasy feel. It's a production that utilizes a lot of on-location shooting (though an incredible amount of CGI extensions and supporting VFX are used) to create a very gritty, grounded world. Not to mention the sheer number of talented actors giving extraordinary performances.

At the very least, I think we can all agree that GoT would not have found its way to HBO (or anywhere else) without LotR. Talk about ripple effects.

I GRADUATED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry, just had to share - I can read this thread now!

Finished all the books. I haven't read through a book series like that since I was a kid.

Now I join the waiting throngs wondering why the heck GRRM has constant appearances scheduled when he needs to sit his ass down and finish the next book.

Congratulations! Now you can talk about anything and everything in here.

I'm still re-reading the books for the second time. I've got about 100 pages left to go with A Clash of Kings. From looking at my posts in this thread, apparently I've been working on it for over three months. Been working a lot more lately, but I had no idea it was taking me that long. I'm going to buckle down and get to A Storm of Swords in the next couple of days.

Oh, by the way, welcome to the waiting game for The Winds of Winter.

Finally started A storm of Swords again. After reading A Clash of Kings so slowly over the last several months, the prologue of SoS really felt like a different mind-set, coming from the last book. I didn't notice that the first time through. I'm not saying it's bad in any way, just quite different in it's vibe.
