He doesn't seem to be a fan of Cruise, which is fine, but suggesting he has some bad reputation (like a Keanu Reeves) is just not accurate, IMO. Of course, I'll openly admit I'm 100% biased, as I'm a huge Cruise fan and of his performance in Vanilla Sky, which is an all time favorite of mine. There are parts where his performance is eccentric, but his character and the script requires it.

Here is my take on the bad rep Vanilla Sky gets: its definitely a film you have to 100% invest in, maybe 2+ viewings. Some people (not directing this at your friend necessarily. The film is pretty polarizing, with a big chunk not liking it) don't want to invest that, so (like 2001-type films) are frustrated when they don't "get it" on a first viewing, and will put the blame somewhere.

my 2 cents
Cruise certainly does not have a bad acting reputation--he has a bad reputation. The two are distinct from one another. The people who seem to dislike Cruise most often do so because of his weird off-screen behavior. Unfortunately, some of these people automatically translate their dislike to his screen performances just for the sake of doing so. Cruise is not the best actor out there, but there's no doubt he's a high quality actor. His resume and accolades speak for itself.

As for Cruise in Vanilla Sky, it's not his best role by any means but he's not bad in it at all. I would say he's "good" in it, but it obviously does not rise to the level of some of his better performances. Love the film though.

the other day i turned it on just to have it on while i was working on some stuff and got sucked in because of the awesome cinematography. i was mesmerized. it was like seeing it from a whole other perspective (compared to watching it on my crapy laptop, like i did the first time). it was also easier to see facial expressions which added tremendously to tense situations.
This is the most powerful drama that i've seen within the Criterion Collection. ONE HELL OF A MOVIE!

I also believe he put a 14 year old actress into situations that were beyond her years. Bale and Farrell were in their late 20's early 30's.
Unimpressed.

As for Kilcher being put into situations with Bale and Farrell, notice that you don't see kissing or anything intimate. Also note that Pocahontas was supposed to be 12 at the time.

I'm easily entertained. But this movie was crap at all angles. I typically take in account of everything a movie has to offer. Thats why im nicked named "Generous Jack" by my friends. I wont recommend this to anyone. Wim Wenders is just a boring director it seems.

Boring is one thing. It's a slow moving film, so I can understand someone not being overly entertained. But it's no slower than a film like Revanche.

As for it being "crap" at all angles...that hurts credibility there because there are multiple things about the film that are objectively great, like the acting, directing, and writing.

Revanche has an AMAZING story with allot of suspense, twist and turns w/ great acting and great cinematography.

The acting is great i never bashed the acting i bashed the Director, and the Story. This story is BORING i truly dont care that he was a jack*ss and now he's trying to make things right. There's no climax there's no Grit there's no relief.

Oh my credibility only matters with recommendations. If i tell someone a movie is great then they usually like it. But im not getting paid for this so who cares

alright folks, in my attempt to expand my favorites collection i'm always looking for something i haven't seen that may be close to my favorites in feel, cinematography, atmosphere, story, characters, directing... you get it. and while i can google day and night until my fingers fall off i figure i would ask you guys for help. to hopefully make this easier, the first list will be my Top 36 favorite films, in alphabetical order. the second list will be a list of films i have seen that are somewhat similar or may be something that would get mentioned, this way after people take their time and consideration i don't blow them down with "seen it, seen it, seen it, hated it, seen it".

We should do stuff like this more often.

You seem to have a very diverse taste and appreciate complex movies, as well as a lot of other stuff.

21 Grams - has similar elements to Babel (same director) and Magnolia.

Vicky Cristina Barcelona (similar feel to Closer).

Lost Highway (Lynch - closest to Mulholland Dr.).

Blue Velvet (more Lynch).

Any Hayao Miyazaki based on your love of Pixar - Kiki's Delivery Service, Ponyo, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, My Neighbor Totoro and Sprited Away are all 5/5 and I'm really curious to see what you think.

Grave of the Fireflies - no reason other than it's an animated masterpiece.

Taken - good action fun with a real actor (blows Collateral away).

Amelie - just great, not because of your faves. Full of detail, humor, quirky stories and Audrey Tautou.

I assume you have seen The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile? Same director as The Mist. Better films and stronger acting.

Vertigo - complex plot, great acting, classic Hitchcock.

Chungking Express - quirky Criterion goodness.

Doubt - story sounds boring, but it isn't. Great acting all round.

The Pursuit of Happyness - You gave Seven Pounds 4.5 and this is the same director and an even better performance from Will Smith.

The Reader - set in Germany - Winslet is superb.

12 Monkeys - You seem to like Gilliam.

I second the votes on Taken and The Pursuit of Happiness. Taken is pretty bad-ass.

Taken vs Collateral????
Taken is more entertaining because of the story but Tom Cruise in Collateral would eat Liam Nelson alive. His character was real! I've met plenny of Spec Op guys and tons of CIA agents and Tom Cruise's character was on point.

My favorite scene is when he lays into the thugs in the alley. That sh!t was so realistic!!!!!!!
