I can tolerate the pacing of the film by watching it in two parts the way I do for the extended cuts of Lord of the Rings. I just split it up like the extended cut DVD and stop about 80 minutes in after the “Heart of Darkness is not an adventure story” scene.

I haven’t actually watched the theatrical cut of this one since the theaters— based on some of these recent comments, I should revisit it again.

How many reissues has Universal done with this film since 2005? I have multiple Blu-ray releases (the original, a Steelbook comic-pane cover, the UK digi-book, and the lenticular UCE) and the 4K. I still have the original DVD extended cut.

I’d rather see this film revisited on 4K with a new transfer without torched brightness.

Now that we’re approaching the 20th anniversary of this amazing film, I REALLY hope they put it back in theaters for a limited run. This film, like Avatar, just BEGS to be seen on the largest cinema screen possible. I would go in a heartbeat

I feel like I've watched this movie too many times, I love it but I think I've kind of killed it for myself. Last December was the first December i haven't watched it since it came out.

Would love a 20th Anniversary re-release with a new transfer. Probably won't happen, though.

I got a digital copy but returned it at Amazon because that "HDR" grade is fraking awful.

It just looks terrible, as though they just jacked up the APL of a SDR grade to a 11.

I plan on revisiting the extended cut, but will watch it over two nights. I do this with the extended Hobbits and LOTRs as well.

There is ostensibly a stylistic and creative choice to add a yellow lighting cinematic aesthetic to certain scenes (e.g. like Steven Soderbergh’s Traffic) via post-processing, and it is different to the aesthetic that was released on the blu-ray version, which raises questions as to why the blu-ray and the 4K are different stylistically.

I watched this 4K, and I have made my peace with it, as fortunately it is better than James Cameron’s remasters retouched by A.I.

The 4k does improve the brontosaurus stampede, falling off the cliff scene quite a bit. Now it's decent compared to awful on the blu-ray. It certainly is a mixed bag overall, though.

The middle section on the ship kills the film for me. It goes on and on. Enjoyed Skull Island far more. It felt like a proper old fashioned romp.

This 4K burns my retinas. I have to turn off peak brightness just to be able to watch it. Since Universal is on this remaster kick, they need to put this on the list and fix the bullshit processing and overbrightness. All the early bird format releases need another pass since most were mastered to show off than be true to their source.

It is indeed bright af, but I will say when you put the BD in to compare it also has super high contrast and bright skies. So it's a source issue to some extent, the unrestrained HDR just exacerbates it.

To be fair, the Blu-ray still looks pretty amazing. Watched it just a few weeks ago and was pleasantly surprised how it still holds up.

This film had always been treated quite well on home video. I had the HD-DVD, the Blu-ray, this 4K... I of course had the DVD before all that, too. They all looked great at their respective times of release.
