It isn't always about the ability to afford something.
I could afford to blow my money on all kinds of worthless crap, I choose not to (in most cases). If they sell the same film for $7 in the same format for $35 one must have a purpose behind forking out that much extra cash for a single release. I pay a premium for film preservation from the golden age of cinema, as I place some value there and appreciate the dedication of the history and how these look in HD. I realized I'm part of a small market and it is those of us willing to put down the cash that enables these releases. I do not place the same value or support MCU in the same way and am fine with picking them up at the thrift store for $3 a piece as people grow tired of them....own quite a few. Few films where the Steelbook won't come down to affordable levels either new or used. $40 for a release they will make tens of thousands copies of (or more) is only going to be a rare indulgence for me. John Wick 3 was the only one in recent memory. I felt I underpaid for 1+ 2. Last edited by 78deluxe; 10-07-2019 at 02:03 AM. |

I never buy a steelbook just because it's a steelbook, I only buy it if a) I like the movie and b) I really like the art. Recent examples:
-Passed on all the pixar steelbooks because they were ugly. -Got the LA Aladdin steelbook because it looked really good but passed on the animated one because it was plain. -Got the plain Iron Man 4Ks even though the steelbooks look great because I dont really like the IM that much, but was willing to get them cheap from DMC. Now, sometimes like Fantastic beasts I was able to get the steelbook really cheap so I went for it even though it wasnt a particularly great steel. |

Originally, I went nuts buying Blu-ray steelbooks for a short period of time, but soon questioned why I would ever want to own Wrath of the Titans, so now I'm just buying what I think is a good movie or something worth collecting. I pass on steelbooks if they're missing the second disc with the bonus features. I don't chase overseas steelbooks either (I do own one but it was a good deal). These Best Buy 4K steelbooks are sure putting a dent in my bank account though, especially how they keep coming out several at a time.

I have been crazy about SteelBooks (new titles as well as double-dipping to my collection of already standard editions) up until recently when I'm starting to question if it's worth it. The prices are starting to get a bit ridiculous with the art becoming, for the most part imo, plain and boring (Toy Story 4) as well as the quality of the SteelBooks themselves (few with gloss and/or embossing). Recently I'm actually picking up a couple of the standard releases instead of the SteelBook (Toy Story 4, for example). I still plan on getting the premium SteelBooks of movies I like from Blufans because the quality is well worth the price, but I think I will be more scrutinizing, unfortunately, with BB SteelBooks.

My suggestion to all Studios & retailers would be for them to provide a warranty on cases, since the new norm is $35 for Steelbooks, if they are sold or shipped damaged (Dented or slashed), then the Scanavo Ohio plant should be able to send you a minty fresh one, since they 100% behind their product.

Yeah, What if they came to Best Buy/other retailers already damaged by Scanavo in some way? Then there is damage to the steelbooks that may occur in the mail, should Best Buy/other retailers be held accountable for the way the mail handles the packages once they are shipped? Yes they should because of not packaging the steelbooks/merchandise well enough in an effort to prevent any damage from the beginning.

![]() so like.. you know this is the steelbook section of the forum, right? the entire game is the packaging. for some, it's a hobby. for many, it's an obsession. either way, it's for collectors. |

I started on steelbooks like a freight train but then came to my senses in terms of steelbooks. I still buy the ones that I like both package and movie (for the most part but sometimes can't resist a nice steel even if the movie sucks.
Now, I look at the $35 price tag on both new movies and 4K released of old movies and decided that getting some steels is just not worth it unless the significant drop in price. It does look like designers of steelbook just gave up and a lot of the new releases just look bad. The regular 4k slips are starting to look better design and art-wise. AS for the regular 4k slips, you know at some point they will drop in price or even be more prone to flash sale and black Friday specials or even get them on eBay cheaper ( I got men in black international on eBay 4K + bluray no digital for $10 free shipping). Fact is people buy what they like and steelbooks are a category of their own when it comes to collectors. Some classic collections I would get in steelbook version in a heartbeat (awaiting 4K releases of some of the Star Wars). Otherwise, I'm going to stick with regular slipcases. Buy what you think makes sense. |

I'm going to mainly buy marvel and dc steelbooks and the occasional popcorn movie steelbook like godzilla or the meg.
I own Dunkirk and Wolf of Wall Street and many other of these type of films, those are the kinds of titles I will lay off on. I especially like the Disc and Digital early access from Vudu. We'll see if I can stick to the plan. Both A Star Is Born and La La Land 2 films I didn't totally love had great artwork so I bought them. I probably should not have gotten them though. |

I've always been a collector in comics, video games and such but not steelbooks. Once upon a time, I used to only get slipcovers for my movies... Till the MCU became a thing and Best Buy started releasing all these exclusive steels. To me it was like collecting comics with variant covers which is even more bad news for my wallet. lol. Now every movie I buy is in steelbook form as it's just a cleaner look. I try to hold out for sales except for the MCU since they sell out in days.
So the answer is yes... Once a collector, always a collector. |

To buy, or not to buy. That is the question.
Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer The dings and slices and pay out a fortune, Or to take arms against a sea of commerce, And, by opposing, end them: to cease To collect no more |

I’m glad that you made this thread, I’ve been going crazy with steelbooks all year. More so than just new releases at Best Buy but also older/rare finds on eBay, importing from kimchi and Zavvi.
I think it’s easy to get caught up in collecting. I enjoy “the hunt” every Tuesday at Best Buy hoping to snag the last steel on the shelf. At the end of the day you’re really just left with a bunch of movies sitting on the shelf collecting dust. |

I must be old school to remember Best Buy selling new release steelbooks for $19, including Disney. Disney/Marvel kept to their $20 up until post-Ultron. Ant-Man was one of the first to have $29 price tag if I remember, then the rest of the studios followed after realizing there was a boom in steelbook demand. I remember when Mad Max Fury Road steelbook came out and what a complete chaotic mess that was for anyone who ordered it. Best Buy I think has improved since then, but yeah, their system needed to change over these movies and studios cashed in on the opportunity by upping the prices. Studios were already upping their movies to $24 anyway, but still, and now with 4K, studios have more of a reason to charge premium.
I still consider myself a steelbook nut, however, I noticed myself buying less of them over the past year or so. I still buy Marvel/Disney/Lucasfilm, however, I've been skipping or uninterested in their 4K re-releases. I did pick up Brave, but that was the only Pixar 4K steelbook I picked up. It gets to be way too pricey and in the end, its the movie I want, and if it's a favorite, then I'm willing to pay for something special. I bought John Wick 3, I'll buy IT 2, I'm also collecting Scream's Carpenter steelbooks. Other than that, I've cut back because of price and overall quantity of my collection. Plus, I pre-order all my movies now, and it's been a lifesaver, but I don't get the same rush as going in store and getting it in person. I don't want to fight people on a plastic case, and plus, my stores are smart and do instore pick up, so except for maybe one or two, they're all gone by opening. I learned my lesson with Fury Road and Doctor Strange 3D, never again will I chance it. I i will pre-order online or do instore pick up. I can say people were very upset with me with how easy I picked up Moana 3D steelbook as I walked out the store with no cuts or bruises. lol. If anything, I hope in 5 to 10 years or so, I go into movie stores and see if I can find or pick up some used steelbooks, which I have done and that is very fun. I think the physical media is dying (it already has started long time ago) and that's why studios are trying to squeeze bucks out of their new releases through perks like steelbooks (before to sell more blu-rays it was the digital copy that was sought after). I think steelbooks will be around for a while, especially in the UK, so I'm looking forward to what studios bring out! I'm still interested, even if my personal hype has dwindled. |
