I remember when Mad Max Fury Road steelbook came out and what a complete chaotic mess that was for anyone who ordered it. Best Buy I think has improved since then, but yeah, their system needed to change over these movies and studios cashed in on the opportunity by upping the prices. Studios were already upping their movies to $24 anyway, but still, and now with 4K, studios have more of a reason to charge premium.
Captain America: Civil War
3D+BD+Digital: $30
I always preordered from Amazon before but because of their spat with Disney, couldn't preorder CA:CW. That was my first time learning of steelbooks and retailer exclusives. Reckon my wallet would be so much happier if Disney and Amazon hadn't had that spat.

Doctor Strange
BD+DVD+Digital: $30
3D+BD+DVD+Digital: $35

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
4K+3D+BD+Digital: $35 - pretty good deal, iirc only way to get 3D without importing

Thor: Ragnarok
4K+BD+Digital: $35 - sadly the standard now for new releases

I've pretty much stopped on steelbooks. (and I say "pretty much" because if there is an occasional steelbook that's really nice, I'll still go for it.

Im just curious, how many people open their steelbooks and how many people leave them sealed and buy a second copy of a movie to watch? If you open them, do you put them in protectors or not?

I’m a sucker for steelbooks and have been for about 5 years I think.

However, it’s getting pricey when almost every week new ones are coming out, especially in 4k at $34.99. It’s getting harder and harder to justify though when the quality of the movies are sometimes sucky as well as slashed, dented, dinged, scratched steelbooks.

I’m being more “choosy” and “selective” nowadays.

I wonder what’s going to happen in say 15 years. This is another discussion.

What if we can’t even play our 4k’s and blu-rays anymore? What if, like VHS players, you can’t find players in stores anymore, and digital is the only way to go?

These literally will just be there collecting dust!! Yikes

Everyone loves the glossy ones around here but they get fine scratches from the shelves through the plastic wrap and every scratch or dent is highly visible no matter how small. You can't even try and rub down a minor dent because they're highly reflective and under light dents are even MORE obvious. They're like lunch box tins. Most don't seem to like matte around here but IMO they look look less cheap/toy-like and minor flaws are much less noticable. I think those early Warner steel waves out of Canada were pretty much perfect. Those are what got me interested in steels.

Even when it gets difficult to find dedicated players, I expect it'll still be easy to find used game consoles. They make millions and millions of those.

Got a PS3 and PS4 which will do Blu-ray and 3D. Will be getting a PS5 when that's released. I believe the Xbox One S or X also plays 4K.

Also have multiple Blu-ray drives for the PC. I typically rip in full quality to NAS as I acquire discs and actually watch via Infuse Pro on AppleTV 4K more often than not. About the only times I watch the actual discs are 1.) when it's newly bought and I don't want to wait 30 min to 1 hr for rip, or 2.) when I want to watch bonus features.

I love a good glossy steelbook also, but I agree, they show every single little imperfection - just like a black car!

I would rather have a mice matte one the first go around rather than a glossy one I have to go to Best Buy for 3 different times because there’s a chip on coating, a scratch, a ding. I have had way worse luck with glossy ones.

I open them about 80 - 90% of the time. As you said that other 10-20% is when I double dip because I like a digibook so much for a movie that I really, really like or I just feel it’s worth it.

I don’t have protectors, but it’s something I started looking into. I thought to myself, “nothing’s going to happen to them just sitting on the shelf!”

However, I just checked my red Scarface steelbook as I think I will keep it and put the 4k disc in it. Anyways, it has some mysterious white spots on the back. I don’t know what the hell they are. They won’t come off though. Makes me worried my other ones may develop the same thing.

I don't buy a ton and those I do, I have the tendency to double dip (Target exclusive digibooks/digipaks). I enjoy flipping through the booklets so my steels stay sealed and it's the digipaks that are my "beater" copies.

I see no point in buying a movie just to never open it, so I open everything.

Default Walmart October 2019 Media Refresh - Steelbooks

Was at one of my local Walmart's today looking for the John Wick steelbook. They were in the middle of doing the fall media refresh. They did not have much out yet, I did find John Wick and a Walmart exclusive Tremors 6 movie collection. Some of the new product tags I saw were...

Hellboy
Fantastic beasts
Meg
Wizard of oz
Creed 2
Tremors 6 movie collection
Train to Busan
Star is born
Oceans 8
Pulp fiction
Apocalypse now
Tucker and dale
Children of the corn
Mothra

My store had 2 copy's of John Wick and 1 copy of Tremors. Both were $24.99 each.

Happy hunting.

Thanks for letting us know op!

I might be interested in Apocalypse Now, and Pulp Fiction. Was there a release date listed for all these steelbooks?

The Walmart closest to me apparently had Stevie Wonder stock the shelves because damn near all of the spots where Blu Rays and 4Ks should be have random DVDs. It's ridiculous. They just remodeled/rearranged the electronics department too.

No release date that I know of.
Sounds like most Walmart's are doing the media refresh this week, should see them on the shelves by this weekend.

Also the Wizard of OZ tag said it was $9.99. Not sure what version that will be. Maybe the bestbuy metalpak?
