Even as a shameless fan of 00's DTV horror movies, I was a bit letdown by Groupie. It wasn't good enough to make up for being so tame, and wasn't violent/edgy enough to make up for being mostly average.
It's a Lifetime movie with some boobs. So hey! It could have been worse. And it's not like I need a movie to have hardcore violence and tons of graphic nudity, Stingray is probably my favorite DF release to date and it could essentially be PG rated (maybe it officially is, I'm not sure). In the end, Groupie only cost me buying a couple discs I would have happily bought anyways. And despite the tameness and averageness, I never really felt bored with it. So even though this review is kinda negative, it's a still a win in the end. |

I thought the first half was very promising as a so-bad-it's-good film but it did fizzle out in the second half. Taryn Manning looks good in a bikini though!

Roger Ebert's review of "If He Hollers, Let Him Go!"
I can't tell, did he like it? Quote:
I would hope we aren't influenced much by reviews and judge movies for ourselves, no matter how respected the critic. Especially when the review is from over 50 years ago. And the critic's issue seems to be mostly with the message of the movie, which could be perceived very differently so far removed from it's initial release. Very different times (that's certainly not to imply racism issues are any less relevant today). This actually has me a little more curious as to how this movie would be interpreted today, and if Ebert maybe misinterpreted it back then, even if his heart was in the right place. There's definitely some choice pull-quotes there for the cover art, though I doubt Ebert's camp would allow it. |

I have the Code Red DVD release of If He Hollers, Let Him Go. It's one of the more unusual films in my collection. A sort of surreal blaxploitation Walter Mitty film with less comedy and a lot of anger, it was a good blind buy for me. I'll be upgrading this.
