I noticed the 308 is only 65 watts/channel. My current receiver is 100 watts/channel. Will that make any kind of difference at all?

Thanks

accessories4less has the SR508 for the same price, albeit reconditioned. Would I be better off going that route instead?

Yes, A4L is an authorized dealer of reconditioned Marantz products.

Sorry, was talking about the Onkyo TX-SR308 and SR508, but I know they are authorized for Onkyo as well.

I'm pretty sure the 308 and 508 only handshake with DSD and convert to PCM no matter what settings you select. You may find having your player output PCM has a better sound.

The TX-SR805 that I have uses BB PCM1796 DAC's and allows for direct DSD>Analog conversion.

Alternately you could have a player that converts DSD>Analog directly and use analog multi-channel inputs.

I have found most recordings sound better DSD natively, bypassing bass management...however there are some like the NIN Downward Spiral where I find converting to PCM and utilizing bass management works better. For the most part I prefer DSD natively though.

There's a few titles I'm trying to get that are apparently quite rare - the couple of places I've found selling them are wanting $250-$300 each for them

I was quite lucky to find Beck - Sea Change for CDN$40 on http://www.canuckaudiomart.com a couple months ago.

Passed it over several times at Best Buy @ 2005/2006 when it was $21.99

D'oh!

Is SACD still the best way to listen to musiv if available in that format?

I am a huge grunge fan, bands like BUSH, STP, Smashing Pumpkins, AIC and so on, and am wanting to know the best way to listen to that music in my home. Are regular cd's stil my best option or are there other formats available for those artists I should try?

I have a PS3, a good computer hooked up to my receiver.

And is the Emotiva ERC-1 good?

First off, go to SA-CD.net to find out if any of your artists have released stuff on SACD.

The Emotiva ERC-1 does NOT play standard SACD...it will play Hybrid SACD's though.

Thanks. Not seeing much from SACD. So am I pretty much left to mostly listening to music, if not available in that format, on just a regular old cd? If that's the case, that's why I brought the ERC-1 up.

If grunge is what you like to listen too,it might not have sounded too much better in any case on SACD.Think SACD is best for orchestral pieces, but dark side of the moon sounds good on SACD,so that's obviously not a rigid rule

Don't give up too easily my friend, as it's entirely possible that some of the audiophile labels (Mobile Fidelity comes immediately to mind) have released some of the artists you're interested in.

Try searching through these sites as well:

Thanks. I found one or two cd's, but thats not enough to really make me go out and buy a player.

So, basically, what I am asking is if the genre I want most is not available in these formats, I'm pretty much left just listening to them on cd's right? I thought it would be much easier to find albums in hi-def. I actually assumed most albums would be that way now after all this time. It seems most classic albums are heading in that direction.

I have three BUSH albums on vinyl. How is vinyl quality compared with dvd audio and SACD? And what's a moderately cheap but good vinyl player? I know vinyl is right along the lines of cd is it not? I can't imagine it being close to the hi-def ones.

Come visit in that thread. I don't want to derail this one on SACD.
