Canadian all the way. Correct aspect ratio and a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track.

well i'd say get the Canadian release as H20 is in the correct AR of 2.35:1 and this one is not.

The Canadian release is good, 2.35:1, DTS-HD MA 5.1, but 1080i. But I'll take 1080i over a cropped transfer any day.

Reporting back after watching most of this movie now, the PQ is decent and considering I have not watched the Alliance version I can't compare the two. Clarity and details can be good at times and then other times you know they could have done a better job with a full restoration. The film does feel a bit too dark, even in scenes with decent amount of lighting. I am not too happy that they went with the DTS-HD 2.0 on this release, but it does have a lot of punch to it.......just sucks knowing how good this would have sounded with a 5.1 mix.

For $10, this is worth picking up and I do not regret the purchase as this is light years ahead of the DVD release which is very murky looking and non anamorphic. I am just going to place this in a BD multicase with the DVD version just for the extras. I am guilty of liking films in 1.78 and 1.85 aspect ratios, but it does piss me off when they don't stick with the OAR.

No OAR automatically makes it a no purchase. I wouldn't even accept it if it was free.

How sure are we in the cropping of the film?

Someone posted on the AVS Forums (and is backed by the movie's IMDB page) that H20 was shot in Super 35, meaning the image was cropped to widescreen for theatrical showings, but could be shown on 4:3 TV sets in full screen with added image at the top and bottom and very slight cropping on the sides.

If that's the case, then I assume the movie was filmed with the added image a 16:9 television set would offer in mind and could be technically seen as its official aspect ratio as well, as weird as that sounds. If so, I'll have to sleep on whether or not to cancel my pre-order. However, if the Echo Bridge release is truly cropped at the sides, I'm canceling it and purchasing the Alliance release.

Even if a film's aspect ratio is opened up, it still isn't the films original aspect ratio. Which as far as I'm concerned, STILL makes it a no buy.

I understand that reasoning, but if the movie was made and filmed with both ARs in mind aren't they technically meant to be seen either way?

I'll be holding out for a release in the UK or something where hopefully it will be in 1080P, have the OAR, and have a 5.1 DTS-HD MA track.

The 16:9 ratio of Avatar is Cameron's preferred ratio of the film so it's not the same. Just because films are shot using Super 35 doesn't mean filmmakers don't care if the matte is opened up.

Opening up the matte on 2.35:1 films is quickly becoming the new "fool screen". I'd say 95% of films show on HD channels are open matte, and it's a damn shame too. Even though they show a lot of crap movies, Showtime's HD channels at least broadcast them in their OAR. *golf clap

I don't know what pissed me off more, the 2.0 audio mix or the aspect ratio. Ugh. Guess I'm sticking with the DVD for now.

As aggravating as it is, this is probably the only US release we will get. So unfortunate.
