Funny, the opposite with me. I thought it was a ridiculously overrated film as a child... I think at that age I wasn't at a point where I was willing to let a movie "touch" me like that, and despite seeing it three or four times as a kid, I found the movie overrated.... then many years later in my late 20s I rewatched the movie on HBO (and it was the 1982 cut, not the 2002 one) and pretty much one viewing alone completely changed my view of the movie into one of the greatest movies ever. I think it is a film that has more power to you if you've ever lost a parent or anyone really close to you. Now its a movie I try to watch at least once a year (though I am holding off for the BD for my 2012 viewing)

Though I really love the film (I'm a complete Spielberg die-hard), I've always found it over-rated and I consider it to be Spielberg's second-tier alien effort; CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND is, in my opinion, better than E.T. by several leagues.

While they'll always be compared because they're both alien movies (and why Spielberg didn't want aliens in the last Indiana Jones film), but they're really very different movies geared towards a different audience.

E.T. is a much more intimate film. It's really "The Wizard of Oz" - in Oz, three strange creatures help an alien with special powers (the ruby slippers) go home. In E.T., three strange humans help an alien with special powers go home.

Both films were expert at depicting Californian middle-class suburban life. That was relatively unique at the time. 30 years later, many films have copied that so it doesn't seem so special now. You also have to look how movie creatures looked before E.T. In general, they weren't very convincing. E.T. was very convincing.

Completely disagree. E.T. kills me each time i watch it. It's impossible not to cry.
On the other side of the spectrum, I've tried several times to watch Close Encounters...and can't get through it.

...E.T. is new Hollywood...
...CE3K is old Hollywood...
...close encounters grows on you over time...
...even if you grew up with faster pace editing and storytellling like i did...
...E.T. is just amazing in every regard...

The Target E.T. steelbook has been confirmed as being in stores. The item's page now says "Limited quantities available in store October 9th".

Oh boy...get ready for the stampede!
I'll roll the dice and keep my order for ET, Hunger Games & Avengers.

Do you know if Target will honor the lowest price on release day, like Amazon?

Great to know! I will pick this up if Best Buy doesn't come through with a Digibook exclusive.

Usually if a store has an exclusive they don't allow price matches on it because the other store chains don't technically have the same item. That's been my experience at least.

No, I'm not talking about Target PMing another retailer's price. I'm talking about honoring their own lowest price for my preorder.

Ahhh ok. That I don't know as I've never pre-ordered anything from Target.

Has it been confirmed yet if it's only the theatrical cut that's being included or if the special edition is being included as well?

Yes, it has been confirmed that only the 1982 cut will be included. The new scenes from the 2002 cut are included as extras.

I'm actually kind of disappointed it won't have both cuts. Like Close Encounters, it would have been nice to be able to choose, even if it's not Spielberg's prefered version. It makes it feel incomplete.

I am going to buy this on Blu-Ray, double dipping since I already have the DVD.

With respect to Close Encounters of the Third Kind, I won't

Or, at the least, offer those revised/cut scenes as deleted/extended extras?
