As much as I love Star Wars, and I have faith that Star Wars will succeed in J.J.'s capable hands, I can't help but agree with your statement.

J.J. Abrams Endorses Rupert Wyatt for ‘Star Trek 3′ and Offers Development Update

The team behind the new Star Trek films has not yet selected a director for the part three. J.J. Abrams, who directed Star Trek and Star Trek Into Darkness, can’t return because of his commitment to Star Wars Episode VII. That leaves the door open for someone new to come in. Names that have been rumored include Jon M. Chu and Rupert Wyatt. In a new interview Abrams, who will stay on the series as a producer, discussed the latest on Star Trek 3 and agrees that Wyatt is a very talented filmmaker.

Hitfix spoke to Abrams at a release event for the Star Trek Into Darkness Blu-ray.

Abrams on Wyatt:

Quote:
He’s incredibly talented and we’d be lucky to have someone as talented as Rupert. But there are things we’re focusing on right now before the director, which is just sort of the fundamentals of where the story is gonna go.
Which means before they hire a director, the braintrust behind the film (Abrams and Bryan Burk, along with screenwriters Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci) will figure out the major plot beats, and get to work on a script. Any director would likely need to see a script before signing on. That’s where the film is right now.

Any details on that story, Mr. Abrams?

Quote:
It’s too early to talk about details but there have been a lot of really exciting ideas about what comes next.
So does Abrams’ about quote mean Wyatt is going to direct the film? Absolutely not. But the fact he didn’t bat an eye when the director was mentioned certainly suggests he’s been discussed.

oh damn, no more JJ.

thanks god, maybe we can get someone who actually knows that they are doing. I guess we should be happy though - they saved remaking Star Trek 3 by bringing back Kirk at the end of Into Darkness. maybe it will be the Borg this time.

I saw 30 second clip on the Craig Fergusson show this week and the lens flare was insane and that was just on the Enterprise bridge.

He's still going to be involved. He's producing the film and helping come up with the plot.

It cracks me up that fans are trying to make the Abrams' films are these colossal trainwrecks that no one loves, even though they're both two of the most well reviewed films of their respective years, while also being some commercially acclaimed and successful. He found a way to make it accessible for new fans, and it works. There's nothing wrong with his films. They're two of the best 'Star Trek' films out of the 12 that have been made.

Considering that JJ wasn't even going to direct the second one, I'm glad that he did helm the series again. I suppose it seems right to have a new director. I'm just worried that it might handed to the wrong person. 3 is the lucky number, but not the right kind of luck when it comes to movies.

To me, 'Into Darkness' was like 'Temple of Doom', a really fun ride. I'm hoping the third one will be like 'The Last Crusade'.

Correction: they are THE two best Star Trek films out of the 12 that have been made. ... by a HUGE margin.

They are the only two Trek films I have ever seen, so I'm not exactly the best go to guy on the topic, but I love both of them and I agree. I find it funny based off internet feedback, you would think these were two of the worst received films in years.

the transformers movies made GOBS of money and so did Iron man 3... and those were horrific train wrecks..

Justin Bieber makes more money than all of us on the forum put together and has a bazillian fans... doesn't mean his music is good

most of the masses don't know good from something that fell out of their butts, so comparing box office success with actually being good isn't exactly a good barometer

I still have a soft spot of 'Wrath of Khan' and 'First Contact', but I'd say, generally speaking...You're really right. Abrams brought life back to this series.

Exactly my point. The same with 'Iron Man 3'. I've been noticing that a lot lately. Some people are trying to make things they don't like to be the worst things ever. It's funny, really.

My case rests. 'Iron Man 3', the movie that has a 78% from critics, 82% from audiences, and 7.5 on IMDB is clearly a colossal trainwreck...

Just because some fans were upset over the film doesn't make it bad. At all.

I have seen all of the Star Trek movies now, and speaking for myself I can say that the 2 JJ ones are the best. The ones done by the original cast are... okay. Wrath of Khan is great, but it's a very slow moving movie, with hardly any action. The Voyage Home is actually my favourite from them, just so much fun and energy. The next generation ones all suck, I think only fans of the TV show would like it. First Contact was probably the best out of that bunch. I absolutely love the new ones, they are masterpieces of moviemaking. You just have to see past the lens flares.

you just proved my point. just because something has a bulk of people liking it doesn't mean it's good. taste and quality aren't always synonomous. it just means that 78% of the critics and 82% of people will eat whatever slop is shoveled down their throats... again, my Justin Bieber example

90% of the people out there are ignorant and barely deserving of breath let alone know how to make a good movie decisions, after decades of being fed slop that's all they like

I wonder if it's possible for the people who have a problem with it, take out the idea that it's a "Star Trek" movie. Would they be able to see it differently?

Oh please. Plenty of movies that are actually deserving of scorn get it and then some. Things like 'A Good Day to Die Hard', 'After Earth', and 'The Hangover 3', to name a few actual train wrecks this year were not loved by critics or audiences and greatly underperformed. These are actual bad movies. Movies deserving the hate and vile thrown at them. Bad movies don't get good reviews, just like good movies don't get terrible reviews.

Just because fans aren't happy with how mandarin and Khan were handled doesn't make the movies bad. These movies aren't made for the fans, they're made for a general audience that may not know the source material. Both this films are two of the better blockbusters of the year, and the consensus shows, regardless of a vocal minority saying otherwise.

If you take out the Star Trek instead of being big dumb Star Trek action films they are just big dumb action films.

You have some serious (anger?) issues my man. "will eat whatever slop is shoveled down their throats" ??? "90% of the people out there are ignorant & barely deserving of breath" ???

Just because YOU don't like the movies cited as examples doesn't mean you need to condemn everyone Else who does, and/or seemed to really enjoy them, or does it?
