Good. I'm pretty sure Lucas will release this as a triple pack set, and then later on another triple pack of the originals in 3D, and a deluxe 6 pack.

Any improvement is welcome for the 3D. Star Wars deserves strong 3D.
Speaking of witch, (pun intended), Hansel and Gretel 3D has great 3D from the trailer I saw in theaters.

I love Eric Brevig's 3D! Hopefully, William Tell will be an improvement story-wise, compared to Journey and (especially) Yogi though.

This director shoots good 3D so I'm looking forward to this.
Storyline to William Tell 3D: Starring Brendan Fraser
Renowned archer and war hero William Tell is forced to rise up against the invading Austrians who threaten his lands and family.

That sounds promising. Glad to see he's doing another 3D movie. I was disappointed in the 3D of Yogi Bear compared to Journey 3D, so I hope he goes back to the power of Journey 3D. Yogi's 3D was decent, but you can see there's not enough double image separation for strong 3D.

Christopher Loyd is in this one, the Doc from Back to the Future. It might be worth a look for the 3D and zombies.

I'll go see it in 3D if it's dramatic.

Cool. Glad Del Toro's onboard with the 3D for Pacific Rim. This will be Hybrid 3D then, CGI native 3D, with filmed live action post converted. As with John Carter's 3D, which turned out really good IMO.

No signs of 3D dying out any time soon as the critics may hope. 2013 looks like another great year for 3D.

I'm also very happy that del Toro changed his mind. And I am also really happy actually that WB was more than willing from the looks of it to meet del Toro's conditions. While I'm a little worried about the "hyperstero" comments he made, I think this will be much better non hyper stereo movie than Star Wars Episode 1( I still need to reassess the 3d for that one, as I don't think I thought it was bad, just kind of...subtle...), and I do actually kind of agree with not giving hyper stereo to the giant robots. I really hope they find the right balance for giving the robots enough depth to feel and look 3d, but also meet del Toro's wishes for non-hyper stereo.

Here's to the conversion team! *toasts*

Pacific Rim should be a real treat, del Toro seems to be doing everything right!

As to 3D dying.... not a chance. The studios, theatres and many others are so invested in the format,I really don't think there's a way back now! Simply the fact that the theatres need to try and keep ahead of Home set-ups....

IMAX,48FPS,4K cinema,3D,Dolby Atmos... all these things are or will be necessary to even get people out of the house. TBH,for a normal 2D non-action flick I rarely go the theatre these days... I dare suggest my experience at home of such movies will be superior.
However the Hobbit at 4K,3D,Imax and Dolby Atmos..... now all that I can't have at home.. and will happily pay the premium for the superior,big-screen-spectacle experience!

I think I've mentioned this before, but to me 3D is bringing cinema back to the way it was originally meant to be experienced.... viscerally on a big, single screen. The rising popularity of IMAX formats is testament to that. With 3D bigger just works better, and I say thank God for that!

So,long live 3D,the future of cinema!

Amen, I honestly can't understand how anyone can not like 3D. It completely brings a new dimension to a movie.

Think it really comes down to endurance. Like Lawrence stated in "Lawrence of Arabia": as the match burned down to his fingers. "The trick is to not mind that it can hurt."
Enthusiasts love 3D so much they refuse to give way to the thought of a potential uncomfortable 2+ hour sitting. To others, the amount of time can be an unpleasant and difficult process to bare for the experience.
When it is developed, Full HD Auto-stereoscopic 3D should solve the situation for good.

Paul

Yeah, I hope they don't go too conservative for the giant robots/monsters since they'll be the highlight of the film. I rather have it look a little bit more miniaturized with strong 3D than go subtle just for the sake of realism. Hopefully they hit a middle ground, but the fact they have the 3D rendered assets for the CGI is a really hopeful sign they'll get it right.

Yes. Large 3D screens are expensive at the moment, but when prices eventually go down, it will be welcome.

At least hopefully our present Full HD Blu-ray 3Ds should be backwards compatible for future Full HD Autostereoscopic displays.

Edit note: Update: "Pacific Rim" - added to converted 3D category list.

I agree about more 3D horror. Silent Hill 3D I don't think is a straight on horror movie, but more of a mix of adventure/horror/mystery. TCM 3D 2013 might be interesting if they do it right. This being the third time though they're using the original title (gets confusing).

Pet Sematary, Salem's Lot, The Shining, The Exorcist, Evil Dead, Dawn of the Dead, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, a lot of the original horror classics would be interesting to see in a third dimension as many of the diehards would object to as an automatic reaction to tampering with the classics, even though the 2D version remains intact.

Thanks. Hopefully they announce the 3D soon for Thor 2 (set for late 2013) considering how well it worked for Avengers. I thought the 3D in Thor was pretty good despite what is said about the 3D.

Also Man of Steel, at this point is only rumored to be getting a 3D conversion, but they'd have to work fast if it happens without messing up.

I would put LOTS of money on that it will BE converted...

Seriously, with the international market for 3D being what it is, can it even be doubted?? I would bet Stereo D is already working on it!

Personally, I won't pay the ticket premium to see a conversion in the theatre, although I'll usually watch it on 3D Blu later on. So there are people who care, and certainly it's possible to tell the difference between something truly shot in 3-D and a post-conversion job the vast majority of the time.

The Avengers was converted and made a ton of money, sure, but it made a ton of money 'cuz it's the frickin' Avengers and it rocked whether you watched it in 3-D, 2-D, or black & white, lol. In 90% of its scenes, the 3-D was pretty inconsequential and you (I did, anyway) tended to forget about it. If Marvel's Phase 2 films (Iron Man 3, Thor 2, Captain America 2, Avengers 2) aren't shot natively, I'll be quite disappointed and will likely only see them in 2-D. Though I expect them to be extremely enjoyable films, post-conversion isn't for me. Disney is behind the reigns now, and Disney has a record of being involved in quite a few well-shot native 3-D films. They came on board too late to do anything for Phase 1, but with no news yet one way or the other about the 3-D production of the Phase 2 films, I hold on to some hope that they'll be native.

Alice in Wonderland was better than most conversions, but most of the movie was very CGI-heavy (sometimes entire environments seemed to be fully-CG), and being able to just render the stereo perspective for those elements probably made the conversion process simpler.

In most cases, the greater the parallax you want (positive or negative), the more money it costs per frame since there's more for the conversion artist to create or fill in for that second eye. I can't say for sure how the studios decide such things, but I know if I were paying to convert a movie to 3-D (although I'd never do such a thing, since I value my money), I'd try to allocate the money in a way that sees the scenes that are most important, or most likely to benefit from 3-D, feature the best 3-D moments. But the drawback there is that you're left with the majority of a movie that features, at best, very conservative-looking "3-D". And personally, I like a consistently-strong 3-D effect throughout a film, because I enjoy watching for unique uses of stereoscopic cinematography. If there was no stereoscopic cinematography, it's difficult to do that.
