I'm cautiously optimistic about this. It's not that I think this movie needs to be 3 hours so much as the feeling that the theatrical version really was missing some key ingredient that might have made it land better emotionally.

In some scenes where CG elves are front and center, I hope Peter will reshoot footage of actors dressed as elves to replace the CG ones.

Then the look would be inconsistent. It wouldn't work, and I don't like tinkering with films like this. The last thing we want to do is encourage more directors to pull a George Lucas.

It wouldn't be pulling a Lucas, since at least the original version would be widely available.

So I've been just getting these EE's as they come out, on the assumption that the releases are similar to LOTR's EE DVD's, in that no extra bonus content will be on the trilogy set, just a unified packaging.
But they did have a deal where you could get the trilogy slipcase for all three if you had already been buying them individually. Anyone think we have a good chance of that possibility again? |

Please do not get me wrong.
I love the extras in the first two Hobbit extended editions, but, the LOTR extended editions had more to them. One thing I miss that these do have are the separate commentaries. Director & Writers commentary with Peter, Fran & Phillipa Cast Commentary with Elijah, Ian McKellen, Astin, Serkis, Orlando, Christopher Lee, etc (I will admit that I could go the rest of my life and not hear Sean Astin's "know-it-all" voice ever again ![]() Commentary by the design team like Grant Major, Gino Acevedo, Alan Lee, John Howe, Ngila Dickson (who I can't believe they didn't bring back), etc. Commentary by the production/post-production team with the many SFX, WETA Digital geniuses. I would have loved to hear some of the actors speak on their experience during certain scenes. I do realize that it could be said there was a "running" commentary of scenes during the extended parts of TUJ & DOS. But even Richard Armitage admitted that, "I hid from the EPK camera for the entire shoot because I needed to be alone." For those who do not know, EPK (Electronic Press Kit) is an electronic version of the press kit for the film. It is primarily used by journalists as they gather information for any articles or interviews they create related to your film, but portions of EPKs are even used as Special Features on DVDs. The interviews with actors on the DVD of films are often a part of the Electronic Press Kit. I would think he'd have a lot to say about scenes after the film wrapped and the commentary was being recorded. I admit to finding it difficult to wait for 3 more months for the final Peter Jackson homage to Tolkien. ![]() I think Peter Jackson would do an excellent job creating a screenplay to either "The Silmarillion" or "The Children of Hurin". "The Silmarillion" has the stories of Ungoliant, the Two Trees of the Valar and the story of Beren & Luthien (who Prof Tolkien called himself and his wife) and "The Children of Hurin" tells of life before the one ring was ever forged, Melkor (Morgoth) ruled Angband, Sauron was just a lieutenant, the Great Worm, Glauring, who makes Smaug look like a BIC lighter, is barbecuing the Noldorin Elves. But what do I know? I suppose no one will ever be allowed to make a movie from those due to the Tolkien family's inability to believe that Peter Jackson has made Prof Tolkien's books more popular than they were before! What do they have against money? It keeps their foundation afloat, doesn't it? But, I digress. I am hoping that the final EE of the 6 movies are PACKED with goodies. I'd be willing to pay more for, say, a 7 DVD set (not counting the different versions of the movie), if it was filled with informative goodies. My hubby complains that I watch the extras more than I watch the movies themselves. He's probably right. Thank you for reading my blather. ![]() ![]() |

There's been a lot of buzz on TheOneRing today that The Battle of Five Armies Extended Edition will be released theatrically in October. This could also mean that the other films' extended editions could be screened as well, as I believe the LOTR trilogy has been shown in a similar fashion before.
Here's a placeholder page on AMC's website, which details that it will be screened starting on October 13th with a runtime of 3 hrs. |

the EE release date for the UK is November 16 so would November 17 be the likely release date for the US?
