Ones that were glamorized in the form of advertising and trailers to make people want to see it. United 93, World Trade Center to name a few off the top of my head. But that was just an example of one real life disaster which has been turned into a movie more than once. Ted Bundy is no different as it has already had a movie as well. I'm sure there are also other movies that show the events of something which happened in real life and had to be marketed to reach an audience.

Hence why I think the whole argument of what the critics complain about is ridiculous, since practically every movie has to "glamorize" the movie to appeal to anybody who may buy into it with its marketing.
So should any film based on f-cked up characters and events not have any advertising and be made available for free?

No, it shouldn't. Hence why the original argument by the critics is stupid, because a movie can't be un-glamorized since it would essentially have to be free with zero advertising and be 100% accurate to the actual event(s). Like I said, old man yelling at cloud. Can't argue about something that can't and won't be changed.

I don't recall United 93 "glamorizing" those events.

Here's your glamorization of United 93 to make desirable to other people.

United 93 Official Trailer #1 - Paul Greengrass, David Alan Basche Movie (2006) HD - YouTube
It's a bit of a reach, but you could say that the trailer "glamorizes" United 93 as a suspensful thriller.

The act of glamorizing is painting a pretty picture and making it presented as 'beautiful' in a superficial way.

Which is something United 93 is not.

There is that interpretation of glamorizing, the "beautiful" side, sure. However not all glamorizing is about painting bright pretty pictures. The main point of it is to essentially sell something to somebody, by teasing that person or coercing that person into said thing.

The idea of marketing for movies is precisely this; they create trailers and posters to coerce you into wanting to see the movie, and of course they edit this trailer/movie in a way that would look fine to the person viewing it for their enjoyment/entertainment.

Having said that though, Nic Cage is awesome in world Trade Center. I have nothing against the movies at all, I just think critics don't always think things through properly when they speak.

But that's what you called marketing and advertising a film no matter the subject to your audience

Precisely. So for a critic to make this "glamorizing" argument about this movie making it seem like it's a bad thing is ridiculous, because it's like an old man yelling at a cloud, yelling at something that's always been there, not to mention something that will not be changed any time soon.

The difference is that this particular film does tonally come off as glamorizing the Ted Bundy murders. Same as (while fictional) Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds essentially glamorizes WWII and the Nazis. Or even most Hollywood biopics that 'fluff' up the historical accuracy for entertainment purposes, coming off as exploitive.

United 93 was a very serious, dark, and mature drama with a bit of thriller elements mixed in, but no means glamorized the tragedy.

Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile is taking Ted Bundy and giving him celebrity status treatment making him out to be this glorified pop-culture serial killer icon. It's making him appealing and attractive to either toxic masculine male fantasy and adolescent teenage girls because of the Zac Efron imagery. The film takes grisly material and sugarcoats the subject, playing up the fantastical idea of his murders.

That's the difference.

That's how Ted Bundy was. Heck the 2002 Ted Bundy movie basically plays up on the humor/funny side as well. The cinematography of this movie seems to elevate Ted's view on the world, IMO. If anything we'd be arguing about the glamorization of the cinematography of Ted Bundy's glamorization of killing. Now try saying THAT 5 times faster!

Right, he was like that towards his victims, and the feds didn't even think that Ted murdered the females, at first, because of his charm and looks.

The guy was definitely troublesome. He plays up the innocent cool dude act and strikes in the most unlikely of times, plus he was like a popular high school kid with the girls, there was always an interest. Kinda reminds me of American Psycho. you have a monster inside a man who is seemingly normal and cool.

Which may precisely be the intention of the movie. For which if that is the style they are going for, then there shouldn't be anything wrong.

Exactly, I'm glad we both agree on it. That is why I think that critics who take issue with something so asinine, is essentially idiotic, IMO.

I didn’t realize Netflix had picked this up. I’m looking forward to it and it’s good to see it will be out in just four weeks. I would have seen it in the theater too.
