Not to mention that nudity isn't a big deal to many, many peoples of the world at all. Not in the slightest. Hell, go to a beach in France sometime.

And sex sacred but human life isn't? How does that work, exactly?
Gotham is good. God, SVU is nuts with the mature elements (sex and violence wise).

I still don't get how blood, gore and death is okay for kids, but not the act of how they were born. A bit young to know, sure, but it's not the worst thing in the world.

Yeah, SVU -- jeez. And I'm an L&O addict. It would be embarrassing to admit how many times I've seen all the episodes of L&O, SVU, and Criminal Intent. It's ridiculous.

But what is hilarious to me is that if you don't want your kids to see something like Blue Is the Warmest Colour THEN WATCH WHEN THEY ARE IN BED! No one is arguing that your 8 year-old should be watching ultra-violent movies, or whatever. Just be a parent.

Why is that difficult?

Some people are stupid, basically. It can't be that hard.

Pretty much this.

That's the typical American mindset towards movies. I had a Catholic friend where I knew I could show the most graphically violent R rated movie and he'd have no problem with it but if two characters went beyond simple kissing he'd get visibly uncomfortable and look away.

I had a similar upbringing where sex was viewed in a negative light. I was taught from a young age that it was a bad thing and best not talked about. If there was ever a sex scene in a movie my parents either skipped past it or made a bunch of comments about how bad it was. As a result I had little interest in dating and when I finally started in my 30s I had trouble avoiding feelings of shame and guilt for having a sex drive at all. It took effort to realize that sex in itself is not a bad thing at all. Quite the contrary in fact. It's simply a physical manifestation of the love I had for my boyfriend.

It's all about context. On one end is rape. That's obviously exploitative. It may serve the purpose of a story but I feel wouldn't be appropriate for a young child to see. On the other end is a favorite scene of mine from Talvisota (aka the Winter War). The husband was going off to war and he may never see his wife again. They had sex before he left to have one last moment together. The wife's older mother was in the other room with the children and gave them their privacy, smiling because it was a rare happy moment in a horrible time of war between the Soviets and the Finnish. It's a very beautiful and moving scene. I saw it in my 20s, but would like to think had I seen such a beautiful moment when I was younger I would have a more balanced view.

Child birth is pretty messy and noisy IRL, most movies really sugarcoat it even when trying to be grounded.

Most sex scenes have nothing to do with procreation. Most sex scenes are only related to power, authority, rape, and sex used as a tool to gain favor or return a favor

Ratings exist mainly to protect kids and teens from more extreme fare, but I agree about the standards constantly shifting around. There needs to be a set limit on each type of content; otherwise, the studio can take a gamble and release it unrated. There's no law demanding MPAA submission, but theater owners generally don't trust unrated films...and often, with very good reason. The whole problem could be solved by parents and studios both being more responsible...but that's not a very popular idea these days.
I agree with this somewhat. Explicit content can be damaging to kids. While I abhor censorship, it doesn't mean that everything out there is appropriate for everyone, especially children. It's the responsibility of parents to select appropriate content for their kids. I personally feel my parents went overboard on restrictions on sex, but I could see why they wouldn't want me watching Die Hard at 12. R ratings are there for a reason. I don't blame studios or theater owners for such content. I think parents who complain about these movies influencing their kids are just passing on their responsibility as parents. I remember seeing young children with their parents at Enemy of the Gates in the theater. That's just irresponsible of them.

I do remember my parents having me watch Saving Private Ryan and Schindler's List when I was in middle school because it was important to see. They told me that it should be uncomfortable and hard to watch because such cruelty isn't something that is meant to be entertaining. They were right, and I am grateful to them for making me watch those movies and gradually increasing what I was allowed to see as I got older in terms of violence.

I guess we watch very different movies because I don't find that to be the case.

Well, they don't want people passing out in the theater.

Seriously, though, that reminds me of an episode of L&O:SVU where, since for various reasons they can't possibly make it to the hospital in time, Eliot has to deliver the baby himself. For a network TV show on at 9pm, it was fairly graphic. I have a feeling they had to discuss with someone before shooting, because it seemed right up against the line.

I remember one thing that caught my attention. I watched 24: Live Another Day and it's violent, but there was a scene where we see a person cutting someone's finger. Yes, it was shown.

I actually love the violence in TV-14 shows. Call me a sadist.

I don't mind any of these. Some over use it to get the audience to react, some use it to actually add depth to the movie.

If you're offended by the usage of these you should probably just not go to the movies.

The thing I find funny is that some people have problems with showing a breast, but don't care about murder or gore in a movie. Never got that.

I think any parent who would let a child see things like that, needs their priorities refocused. Kids are like sponges, absorbing everything with no context and then emulating it. Its a very sad reality that a lot of parents don't bother to check their kids' entertainment choices.
I think the opposite is true and that parents do a great disservice to their kids by babying them and trying to shield them from everything. And I think it's contributing to a lot of societies problems.

That's like saying, "I watch L&O:SVU -- all sex is rape."

You don't think that's a bit disingenuous?

Most sex is for fun. That's why people fool around.
