Is it overpriced to see a movie only 1 time in a theater for $15 but be asked to pay $25 to own one forever? What, exactly, do you think you're paying for?
First of all, I haven't went to the movies since Fury Road. But even before that I've rarely went to the movies because it doesn't make sense to pay 10-15 bucks to see something only once. It's something I've realized since I've gotten older.

Quote:
Look... there's a reason Shout! doesn't announce extras until right up to the release... They're doing everything in their power to pack that disc as full as possible given their budget and resources. They're not trying to shortchange customers and fans. If all your choices are based on price ratio to content and less bonus content means they shouldn't be able to charge as much... maybe Shout! should start charging by the special feature. Maybe a title like ROADHOUSE, which is LOADED with features and spread over 2 discs should cost $40, not $30. A double feature disc should be $50. That way, you pay for what you get. If you think they're gouging you on a title like Dragnet, then maybe you're screwing them on a title like Species.
Bless their hearts that they go all out of their way to make me happy when they go out and get interviews with the key grips and and assistant cameramen. Because they rarely get the stars of the movies their selling unless it's a low budget horror movie or something. They do what they do to get paid. They don't give a s__t about me. I appreciate that they've decided to play this game how they think it will benefit them. And I'll do what I think benefits me.

Screw them on Species? Uh, that's another re-release. Most people that were going to buy it bought it the first time. If it would have been 35 bucks I most likely would have picked up the cheaper release or whatever.

I don't recall saying that much about extras before this post. I'm saying I don't want to pay 30 bucks on re-releases.

Quote:
The way I see it (and more people would probably do better to consider this), when I pay $25-$30 for a Shout! title- a few are going to be light on features while a few are going to be overstuffed with special features but it all balances in the end. Maybe try to support a company like Shout!, not because of their success or failure on one title, but because of what they're trying to accomplish across their entire catalog of releases. If you like a movie... buy that movie and then you maybe get more movies you want. Some will be better values than others, but you'll make out OK in the end.
My main point was to say that I'm not so willing to play 30 bucks for blu rays that already have cheaper releases. It's almost like you ignored what I was saying just because you wanted to go on rant. In fact, many of the releases that I said that I was going to get (Dragnet, Single White Female, Valley Girl and The Blue Dahlia) are the releases that are going to be 30 bucks and likely will NOT have a lot of extras. But I'm going to get them because they don't have any other releases. I don't know why you felt the need to try and make this about extras with me.

Quote:
And I often see "most people can't just afford to pay 30 bucks for every movie they like" - so then maybe this isn't the hobby for them? Owning movies isn't a right. The studios are not obligated to sell you a movie for whatever low price you want to pay. At a certainly threshold, they will simply stop (and HAVE stopped) playing along. I would rather have 1000 people willing to pay $50 per disc than 50,000 willing to pay $1 each because those 1,000 people are always going to be far more reliable and enthusiastic. They're a dependable customer base. Those 50,000 will, in large part, drop off over time because it's not something they're invested in. They're the dumpster divers at Wal-Mart who buy things not because they love it, but because it's so cheap they don't feel it.
And I'm not obligated to pay 30 bucks for movies that have already been released.

Most of these titles are re-releases or titles that I can live without having on HD. I'm not as picky as many. I can live with a 3/5 transfer at a cheaper price. I support Scream up to a point, but I have my limits like I'm sure most people do.

I might just wait until it gets cheaper and buy it on ebay or from a seller on facebook. Pretty much all Scream/Shout titles end up on there anyway.

All I'm saying is, $30 is a little steep for a single movie on Blu-Ray disc, especially one that is over 30 years old.

I wouldn't pay $30 for a single new movie 4K, I sure as hell won't pay that for lower tier picture on Blu.

If they want to move product they would make the price tag a little less intimidating. I mean I picked up the Pink Panther collection brand, day one for $55.

Why should this one title be half the price of 6 titles in that other set?

Meanwhile Murder By Death is up for $20 right now.... which is fantastic price by the way.

I have to agree with most of you. I support Shout and what they do, have several titles. Most people would say why rebuy a movie you own that you can get for $5 on DVD anyway? Well, for me it's the bonus features and only one interview isn't worth it for me to spend $30 and a commentary by a guy I never heard of. I'm sure Shout would've stacked the features if they could so I'm not hating. To each his own though, if you love it enough you'll pay it.

So....you don't care at all about upgrading from SD to HD? You don't mention the main feature at all. That doesn't carry any value?

Interesting.

If you prefer streaming, then why are you on a blu-ray forum? And it's been available for years! You should have just bought it there and not been in this thread. Those of us that want a less compressed signal plus lossless audio have an option, thankfully.

BAM!

Honestly no. I already own most of the movies and I'm not an HD junkie so the bonus features are what I'm interested in. I will admit that 2k-4k transfers look excellent.

Which is ironic because there's a bigger leap between SD to HD than HD to 4k.

If you don't care about HD then....ummm...why are you here?

Do you have a sign up page or mailing list where we can all coordinate snubbing physical media releases because the previously unannounced bonus features on one specific title didn't float our boat?
Lol I see what you did there, but at the same time I do have 13 Shout releases preordered right now. As I said I’ll wait for this particular title when it’s down in price.

Someone else said it’s peer pressure wanting to spend $30 on 30 year old movies. I think the real peer pressure is trying to convince people not to buy from Shout, the 10 or so who do it in every post pertaining to Shout/Scream.

Quote:

Movies aren't going to be released on physical media anymore. And not buying a movie that you like (or even love) OR waiting until it drops until $10 sends a pretty strong message to studios that they shouldn't bother, especially studios like Shout who are licensing these movies. I know it may not feel like it to my entitled brethren but boutique studios are doing us a favor by getting these movies released. Otherwise they'd never happen. Ever.

Hell, I'd easily pay laserdisc prices just to get the 30 or so movies that I still need to upgrade from DVD in HD on BD. They don't need any extras sans the trailers. Just give me the movie in fantastic quality and lossless audio.

But maybe I'm simple like that. I'm a fan of the movies first. I don't need them to be in the bargain bin at Wal-mart for me to purchase them NOR do I need them to up my disc count for bragging rights. It's sorta like facebook - I look at people who have over 500 friends and say "Do you REALLY like all those people? Or are you just collecting just to collect."

/endrant
Again I was quoted but misunderstood also, I am a Shout/Scream supporter & I agree with your above quote. These naysayers are the ones trying to convince people not to buy from Shout not me. I bought directly from their site & have no problem admitting it.

I don't prefer streaming, I prefer physical blurays. BUT......since this one only has a commentary with some unknown historian, and an interview with ONE co-star being added to it, it really doesn't warrant the incredible price they are asking for it.

At the time of this post ,Amazon is still asking for $29.99, and SHOUT has already dropped to $24.99. Even at $24.99, it's a bit steep for a 1987 catalog film. I was responding to the poster who seemed only interesting in upgrading from SD to HD and if that's the case....he can do so for only $14.99.

I already PLACED my order for the bluray, but If the price doesn't drop more, I might cancel and only get the VUDU copy until the film goes on sale sometimes later.

$24.99 for the blu-ray is a bit steep, but you'd pay $14.99 to get it on VUDU and eventually get the blu-ray on sale, which would presumably have to be significantly less than $10 (which is not likely), because otherwise you'd be paying the same amount that you deem to be "a bit steep". Only you'd be paying twice for the same movie. Why not just wait for the blu-ray to drop in price a bit and then buy it? $14.99 for a thirty year old movie on VUDU is more of a rip-off than $25 for the blu-ray IMO.

I'm considering that option as well. I always want to support PHYSICAL media over streaming.

I actually got an email today from VUDU saying that Jurassic Park: Fallen Kingdom was down to $14.99. I thought well for $12 more someone can get the VUDU copy as well as the BD and UHD. Not much of a deal there VUDU.

I think it depends. I'll pay $30 for something I really love. I'll also pay $30 for a stacked collector's edition of something I really like. However I'm not going to pay $30 for something I want to own but am not super excited for. Not on standard BD in the UHD age, anyway.

I think Shout know this though. They're basically writing off more casual purchases to make more from the dedicated purchasers. Whether that makes them more in the long run or less we'll have to see. If their prices go back down we'll know the answer.

I'll pay up for Dragnet. I skipped Brain Dead and will skip Creepshow, at least until a sale. That's how it is now.

On one hand it will make cultivating one's collection a more exact procedure, on the other... blind buys will no longer be an option.

Either way, once I figure out what Shout's pricing strategy will be, I will adjust my price point accordingly.

I don't want or expect these titles to be priced Mill Creek cheap, that's entirely unreasonable and irrational. I just want them to be a little less than $30.

Got a pending charge on the credit card for this one, however my order says "Error" for the status instead of "processing". Already contacting Shout, but that's just weird.
