Default Abbott and Costello Meet Sky Arts...

Sadly, if you didn't spot it yesterday (Sunday 2nd) , you've already missed the best of the lot, with Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein having been shown Sunday afternoon.

Having not seen it in MANY years, I had forgotten just how impressive a film it was.

And yes I know they don't meet Frankenstein, they meet his monster instead, along with the Lon Chaney Jnr werewolf. And Bela Lugosi in a great performance in only his second and last appearance as Dracula on film.

However, it appears that Sky Arts have a full Abbott and Costello season on Sunday afternoons with "Meet the Killer, Boris Karloff" up next Sunday 9th October (Karloff refused to appear as the monster in the prior film), and "in the Foreign Legion" on Sunday 16th.

PS Alfred Hitchcock Presents reverts back to the start again at the end of season 2. I really hope that they do go on further at some point though.

I might set that up to record, "Meet the Killer, Boris Karloff". Thanks for posting about this Abbott and Costello season.

The first season of The Abbott and Costello Show has been released on Blu-ray in the States by boutique label Classicflix (I think it's Region A and not Region Free), along with film Jack and the Beanstalk. The second and final season of The A & C Show is in the works (read something in the North America and Studios and Distributors sub-forums about a recent Kickstarter campaign).

There was an airing on TPTV recently of Return of the Vampire, with Bela Lugosi playing a Dracula-type character, but couldn't be referred to or called Dracula because of copyright reasons (it was a Columbia film, whereas the early thirties Dracula film with Lugosi being from Universal).

United Kingdom Magnum, P.I.: Season 4 on ITV4

ITV4's repeat run of the original Magnum, P.I. moves into the fourth season a week today (Friday 21st October) with the episode "Home from the Sea". I believe this episode was remade in the revival show (at least a couple of episodes of the Five-0 revival were remakes of episodes from the original Hawaii Five-O, including "Hookman").

United Kingdom TV screening of the original Halloween

I have a vague memory this UK TV channel has shown the original Halloween before. Have seen in the new issue of TV & Satellite Week magazine that it's getting an airing on 4seven next Monday night (31st October) at 10 pm - 11.50 pm.

Didn't spot this when I made my previous post (easy mistake to make, like with the time difference (referring to UK clocks going back an hour this weekend). The original Halloween is also getting a screening on Channel Four this coming Saturday night (29th October) at 11.35 pm - 1.10 am.

Also getting an airing, in the early hours of Sunday morning (technically Saturday night) is horror film The Curse of the Cat People (BBC Two at 1.55 am - 3.45 am British Summer Time. Check the listings to make sure the recording is correct).

United Kingdom BBC Two next Sunday night

It's difficult to explain the reasoning behind posting this in Miscellaneous Corner, instead of in the
[Show spoiler] ghost story adaptation thread in UK TV Shows or/and in the BBC Ghost Stories for Christmas thread in DVD Movies (I don't recall there being an existing thread for folk horror films and TV series in UK & Ireland and DVD Movies (correct me if I'm wrong).
Have seen in the new issue of TV & Satellite Week magazine that next Sunday night (13th November) on BBC Two, after a premiere airing of film Here Before (10.30 pm - 11.50 pm) is a premiere airing of a folk horror short film called Know the Grass (11.50 pm - 0.05 am).

A century of the BBC in the style of Adam Curtis. If you don't know who he is, his current series on Russia is also on iPlayer.

Very funny, particularly liked Muffin The Drug Mule and Downton Abbey meets Peaky Blinders

Default Alfred Hitchcock Presents Season 3

Good evening.

*walks across camera*

Sky Arts begin showing Season 3 at 6pm on Monday 28 November, having rerun Season 1 and 2 several times.

The first episodes stars William Shatner and Jessica Tandy. The second episode includes Jack Klugman in the cast. All of whom were little known in 1957 when this was made!

PS ITV4 concludes the rerun of Magnum the week after next and then returns to the start to begin again.

The Sky TV listings information is a bit confusing for Magnum, P.I. (where it specifies which season and episode number, saying some or all of the fifth season episodes being repeated this week, are Season 4 episodes instead). ITV4 are repeating the first four episodes of the fifth season between tomorrow and this coming Friday (beginning with the two-part story "Echoes of the Mind". Note: this was originally shown in the States as a two-part episode and not a feature-length episode), then (as you say) they're going back to the beginning next Monday. Why would they only show the start of the fifth season and not the rest of it? Would be good if ITV did an airing of Simon & Simon.

At least we're finally getting the third season of Alfred Hitchcock Presents on Sky Arts. I did look at the prime-time TV listings for next Monday earlier, but forgot to look at Sky Arts. Thanks for posting about it.

Watched the first part of Film Noir last night (looks like it airs first on Sky Arts on Sunday nights (at 8 pm - 9 pm). Even though it's called just "Film Noir", based on who contributed to it, it's kind of a spin-off from Discovering: Film and The Directors (some of the recent film critics from it contributed, Ian Nathan (waving his arms about), Neil Norman, Stephen something and a welcome appearance by Derek Malcolm (who returned during the most recent series of Discovering: Film and looked well in this first part of Film Noir). I wasn't expecting to like it much, but I definitely enjoyed it (my mind was wondering which is the best physical media release of 'M'. Also, some of the Caligari and Mabuse films were featured.

I wondered if Audrey: More Than An Icon was a new documentary or not. Saw it in last week's new TV & Satellite Week. The Mae West documentary sounds good.

A bit morbid this, but they say it happens in threes. Recently, it was announced that Irene Cara and Christine McVie had passed away. I was a bit shocked today when reading today's 'i' newspaper that actor Clarence Gilyard Jr. has passed away (for me, I know him best for starring on legal drama series Matlock ("Matlock!") during the fourth through to the seventh seasons. He left the show to star on Walker, Texas Ranger. Can also remember him from the first Die Hard).

Really enjoying this. There is enough material in this series to do further series (I was thinking of the genre itself, but there is another element to it which will be explored in the third and final part next Sunday night). For example, American, British, French and German noir. Maybe this is something to do with Disney and they won't allow clips to be shown from 20th Century Fox film noirs? The film Laura for example hasn't been featured/mentioned. Have any Universal film noirs been shown? At times, it's been a lot to take in, this series so far, but I'm enjoying it more than I thought I would. But I shouldn't have doubted myself as film noir is one of my favourite film genres.

Noticed during the end credits (before Sky Arts squashed them up into the top right-hand corner again (less than a quarter of the total screen size), that Ian Nathan has co-wrote Film Noir.

cutback, has anything appeared in the Virgin Media listings for the fourth season of Alfred Hitchcock Presents? I ask, because Season 3 finishes it's repeat run on Sky Arts a week on Friday (23rd December), the first episode of the double bill being shown that day (6 pm - 7 pm). Would be great if they started showing it just before Christmas, but I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't until the first or second week of January before Season 4 starts (I'm basing this on a guess that Sky Arts will be showing two seasons in a row before repeating them again (like they did with the first two seasons).

Sky Arts schedules are still showing as "tbc" from Monday 26th, so all I can confirm is that episode 1 of season 4 is the second episode on Friday 23rd.

In other news, season 3 of The Man From Uncle (thr stupid silly season) starts on Thursday 29th December and continues twice daily on TCM.

That's good enough for me, and something extra to look forward to during the Christmas and New Year holiday season. Have watched some of the early episodes of Alfred Hitchcock Presents: Season 3 (on Sky's On Demand section for Sky Arts, as the channel squashed up the end credits (with the announcer also talking over some of them) of the season premiere). Very witty, some of Hitchcock's bookends in the episodes I've watched from the third season. The standout episode for me out of those has been "Silent Witness".
