Cool! If your Sanyo's 2:1 zoom/distance allows it, maybe you could have a 2.40 wide 120" 22:9 screen filling the width of your wall for when you watch Scope movies like KOH or League!
Yeah, I would like to do a "constant height" set-up but I don't have the money right now. The Panamorph lens is kinda pricey. That and there is a window behind the screen, the only 2.35:1 screens I have seen are wall mounts ones. Maybe when I can actually build a dedicated room. This is my living room so there has been some compromises. When you make the jump to front projection watching a "scope" is awesome even with a 16x9 screen.
I can actually roll my screen part way up and use the lens shift to make it fit,its pretty cool but I am too lazy to do it everytime.

I've seen mention of a setting to tell it to autoplay the BD discs. Where is this and does it apply to DVD as well?

Well, if 2.40 wide images are actually fitting well on your wall with the Sanyo lens zooming in, all I'd do for now is get a wider screen (Maybe you can get a bigger 16:9 screen and only roll it down to the current 16:9 screen's height or cut the new screen shorter vertically) and maybe recentering the projector a bit so all you have to do is zoom in (I think most 2.40 movies are properly centered within the 16:9 rectangle on Blu-rays)

In my opinion, the anamorphic lens attachment and scaler add very little (you'd get a 15% decrease in magnification of the pixel structure and 0.4 f/Steps more light output on the Scope movies (an f/Step (camera term) is a doubling of light, so 0.4 f/Step is like going from Kodacolor 100 speed film to Kodacolor 133 speed film) and that is, all things being equal, when in reality the anamorphic attachment's extra optics will decrease the theoretical light advantage to even less than that, and add lens flare (lowering of dark shadows contrast + less deep blacks) to boot and aberrations that will decraese sharpness a little bit more. So unless you have money to burn, I'd do without them, as 818 x 1920 pixels at your viewing distance seems fine enough as it is.

I recently posted this comparison pics so I'll repost them here so you decide you take the 16:9 pill or the 2.40 pill

Matrix above, 2.40 zoomed in on 2.40 screen
Crank middle 1.85 on 16:9 screen
Matrix below, 2.40 letterboxed on a 16:9 screen

I know what you're thinking, you should've never taken the high definition pill

Hi All,

First post so please be gentle. I live in the UK and heard about these though they don't come out here for a while yet so on my trip to NYC I picked up the last 60GB one from the Toys 'R' Us in Times Square. Can someone tell me if this means I will need to buy all Region 1 encoded Blu-ray discs or is it multiregion?

Must go for now as I have to go and buy the voltage converter.

Thanks

PMP

Remenber, it's region A for Blu-rays, not region 1. Region 1 is for DVDs

You can see what countries region A covers in this map. Region A covers the greenish countries on it.

I saved one or two of my early gen DVD's from the days when I had the PS2 as my DVD player and the laser burn that it did to those discs.

The PS3 is worlds better as a standalone player than the PS2 ever was. Also, DVD and other optical formats are beneficiaries of over a decade of improvements and better design and durability.

Yeah, I'm sure there are some lemons out there, like anything else, but I really wouldn't worry about using the PS3 as your BD player for a while.

This is a night and day and difference, and I'm someone who tends to try and gravitate away from using game consoles as players, but I feel very confident in the PS3 in this case.

I'm not a video gamer at all...in high school I was the tennis jock that made fun of video gamers. That said, I LOVE the PS3. I have a BDP-S1 in my living room and a PS3 in the bedroom. I find I use the PS3 for almost all my movie watching, just because it's faster then the stand alone player.

My only complaint about the PS3 is a lack of up-conversion for DVDs. I've heard that up-conversion is in the works though.

I thought that the PS3 was able to up-convert regular DVD's...

am I wrong?

I was in the middle of playing Resistance:FOM and my screen goes pitch black for like 2 seconds and then the picture came back on. Anyone knows what that is?

Can I just make the comment that, if you have a high definition television, your set is going to upscale the DVD to the set's native resolution regardless of what the DVD player is doing anyway. It is all about which does it better - the player, or the television.

It has been said before, but I'm saying it again: you don't need a voltage converter - they're all 110-240V (so far at least). Just plug one of those UK-cords and you're set.

Dvds - only NTSC (no PAL at all), and for now R3 or R0.
BD - Region A, however some companies release Region Free (ABC) - like Warner. So mostly you have to import, which should be cheaper anyways...Check here for region B BD's that work on region A players (bottom of the page): http://bluray.lindsite.dk/
PS3 Games - have no region (so far), so you could buy them from whatever region.
PS2 Games - have to be NTSC however (I think Japan?).
