The game has trophies

Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol.1
Let’s get straight to the facts, shall we? Volume 1 of the Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection gives you the choice to download each game separately (with Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2 are combined into one) and the bonus contents individually onto your PS5. Each includes digital booklets on their uniform top menus, dossiers detailing the entire in-world history of MGS (complete with warning spoilers on initially opening), transcripts of that game’s dialogue, and an online manual for that specific title.

My hands-on time was limited to the original Metal Gear Solid era. Master Collection Vol.1 contains four titles total from this release window: the 1998 original, Metal Gear Solid VR Missions, Metal Gear Solid Special Missions and Metal Gear Solid Integral.

The Collection keeps the MGS experience as authentic as possible, down to Circle being used to confirm and X to cancel, and save files limited to 30, 15 blocks per (phantom) Memory Card. The DualSense controller’s feedback mirrors the original DualShock vibrations when Snake’s wading through water, firing bullets or taking damage. After playing through the opening acts of the Shadow Moses Incident (my first since completing the game back on original release), the experience still captivates. It’s lean, and the gameplay ideas introduced – so dazzling back in the 90s – have lost little of their sheen.

Let’s continue with MGS and detail what’s new or expanded. Metal Gear Solid will include Trophy support (including a Platinum Trophy), as well as allowing you to select from multiple language versions (each housing its own separate save state). There’s a new top-level, Collection-specific menu. For the MGS era that includes options for minor visual adjustments, choosing from a selection of wallpapers to surround its 4:3 presentation or switch the gameplay screen’s positioning from center to left or right. This menu also includes an option to switch your controller port from P1 or P2. For those who this will be their first ever playthrough, this may be a seemingly odd addition. It’ll come in useful.

The Collection also houses the HD versions of Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty and Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, last seen in the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection released over a decade ago.

Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol. 1 will launch on PS5 on October 24. A PS4 version was announced at the event, but a release date has yet to be confirmed by the time of publishing.

Looks like this will only be 720p across the board, even on the current gen consoles. What a joke.

My guess they'd have had to spend significantly more time on the older games to do anymore than that.

The IGN video implies they made tweaks to MGS2/3 over the HD collection what that'll really entail we'll wait and see but should be fairly obvious to differentiate if its something meaningful

Updating it to only 720p doesn't look like it will work out well scaling all the way up to modern 4K TVs. Very poor look on Konami but not exactly hard for them to do that with fans these days.

Actually 720p scales perfectly on 4K monitors (3x on each axis matches 4K/2160p), but it would have been better if they did more to improve the graphics than just cut/paste the HD remasters from 12 years ago.

so basically a straight port of the ps3 hd collection. I wonder if they bothered to add trophies for MGS1

Havoks post said they did and the IGN video today said they made additional tweaks to make it more current not sure what that means but yes essentially 2/3 are ports of the HD collection.

Why couldn't they do a complete collection like Legacy Collection for modern consoles? This just feels like milking the franchise.

I wonder if MGS4 will finally be released on PC/PS4/PS5/Xbox on Volume 2, I assume.

I’m fairly sure it’s a condition of Sony that games on PSN must have trophies since they began. I could be mistaken but it’s been said before I think.

They broke that rule with the ps1/psp games, not all of them have trophies

If MGS1 truly has trophies I might try to platinum this masterpiece of a game.

The problem moreso imo was that with games, there's a lot kore issues that can occur trying to stretch out a game in 720p to 4K.

Again like others have said, it would have involved effort from Konami they're not willing to really put in. I mean, can we blame them when they see R* do the same for their holy grail GTA franchise and even Red Dead Redemption.

There is a universe out there where Peace Walker is given a remake that upgrades it into a proper console game, MGS4 is given a substance-style update to add extra side chapters and VR missions, and Phantom Pain is properly finished or given a Ground Zeroes-esque epilogue. I'm just not living in this universe it seems.

I recently watched a playthrough of MGS1 Integral and thought the first-person mode is something that could be improved upon with some modern controls.

They're just not willing to put the effort into this and I'm really lacking the enthusiasm to buy the same games for the 4th time or so.

Was going to grab this on Switch and PC. Probably going to stick to PC unless I hear great things about the final Switch release.

MGS is probably my favorite franchise, I wish they had given a bit more effort into this release, but Konami is Konami.

Looks like it's offical now, but digital only for PS4. So that's a no go for me. Guess I'll just grab it on PS5 one day in the distant future. Konami crackheads.

Not sure what you mean by that, here's from Konami's website:

This feels more like a Code in a Box release with a cartridge thrown in to show it's "physical."

What I meant is, after patches etc. They said they were working on some fixes. So the "final product" is what I'm interested in hearing about.

And it could be that all the "extra stuff" will be off cartridge and the main games will be on cartridge. It's very non-specific. And either case, I'd still like it for the portability.

I haven't played it since my game cube twin snakes copy (would have been nice to have those graphics ported to this)... So even though I beat it 50x on PS1/GC its been a long time so yeah would be real nice to have some modern achievements/trophies tied to it and hopefully good ones not dumb ones like S rank for fastest completion time or do every VR mission lol
