I dislike the artwork so much I may just throw the discs in a 4K case with the old Blu-Ray artwork and call it a day. More of a concern is the 66GB 4K disc rather than a 100GB disc. May wait for reviews on this.

And Cosmatos was a journey man director that rescued Rambo 2, Tombstone and Shadow Conspiracy, all three of those films were troubled productions that needed to be completed by certain dates.

But people are making this as Russell conceived this film when it wasn't true, Russell signed a two-picture deal with Carolco right about when Andy Vajna was leaving Carolco, Vajna took this project with him as part of leaving Carolco to his new established studio at Disney; Cinergi. Tombstone script was really good that Cinergi green lit it with the screenwriter attached and agreed to direct; the script was so good it attracted a lot of known talent and at the same time Warner Bros. had Lawrence Kasdan's / Kevin Costner big budget Wyatt Earp project green lit. That caused Tombstone to be rushed and shot/edited and completed by 1993 and because Kasdan and Costner did not want to rush; their project was released in 1994. Russell likes to take credit for Tombstone (and not for his 1992's Unlawful Entry and Captain Ron bombs the year before). But in reality, the unsung heroes were Andy Vajna (producer of Rambo 2) and Cosmatos (director of Rambo 2) who brought the project on time and under budget, and the onset shenanigans like Cosmatos drinking wine on the set; that was completely normal for an Italian director even Coppola does it to this day. And Cosmatos not being nice to the lesser actors; you must not heard the horror stories from James Cameron's sets!

I wasn’t trying to make it out like Russell conceived this, if others have they are twisting the words of those who have spoken about this. I’ve heard this recounted direct from Russell himself and according to him, Costner was actually on the project before him and left to do his own movie when he decided he wanted to focus on Earp’s whole life (we all know how that turned out lol).

But I am aware of how everyone loved the script the original director, Kevin Jarre, wrote but sadly he didn’t have a clue how to direct or manage a set and you’re right that Cosmatos was an old hat at that, but I wouldn’t credit him much with the overall vision of the film, he didn’t sound like he had much control and was just there to make sure the film was on time and under budget as you said.

And I’m well aware of what a nightmare Cameron was back in the 80s, but I still find it hilarious how Cosmatos would literally change his attitude depending on who he was talking to. Cameron sounded like a prick to everyone lol but people tended to at least respect him due to how talented he was (except for the British crew on Aliens ).

This always comes up yet Disney's compression is usually quite good and far exceeds certain botiques who use 100gb and shorter running times.

Signs and The Sixth Sense, both released under the Hollywood / Touchstone banner, were both released October 2024... which, by my math, is five months.
A New Hope has been copyright Lucasfilm since 1997. Fox simply held the distribution rights and they were going to expire anyway in 2020.

As you just said they are Hollywood and Touchstone branded. I said Disney brand. And technically Sixth Sense was released in 4K a couple years ago on Disney+ so it wasn't new, just new to disc.

The last Disney branded catelogue title to be released in 4K anywhere was Alice Through the Looking Glass in January 2024 on Apple and Disney+ with the last one released on disc being Snow White in October 2023.

Fox would've held the distribution to Star Wars ANH in perpetuity regardless of whether or not they were still distributing the LFL catalogue as a whole. It's what they kept when they gave Lucas the ownership rights to ANH in 1997 as you say.

OK. When was the last time Disney even bothered to look at Touchstone let alone Hollywood Pictures or Caravan Pictures in their library? When was the last time Disney even attempted to peak at their R rated titles?

Moving goalposts to keep a hate bias just seems natural for this board.

I get it now. Disney can go burn in a fire and should have. 20th Century needed to go bankrupt and those movies can be lost forever. Every Disney thread is just finding the fault in a release. I hope since this took so long that AI is heavily used to create fake details and it has the darkest DV/HDR10 layer.

I can’t wait for The Sound of Music’s final detail announcement to get on pissed on too.

Signs and Sixth Sense were Hollywood/Touchstone, as was Roger Rabbit and Unbreakable. None are R-rated admittedly, but several of the Camerons sure were. I think Disnee might just have realised that there IS actually a market for such old-fashioned fayre on 4K disc after all, and it's got nada to do with Sony...apart from convincing them to push steelbooks only at ridiculously high prices. Even the switch to Dobly Vision is more to do with Cameron's insistence upon it and Disnee again realising that it adds value to these things amongst collectors.

BUT it is encouraging nonetheless as it's not related to a big franchise or a big-name director. Time will tell if it's one their usual slate of two such UHDs a year.

Exactly what I'd do. Except I'm going to put the two discs and the extended Vista DVD in a 3 disc case.

I pissed on Disney a lot on this board in the past. And they did indeed at one point seem to have given up on physical media, for sure due to the D+ launch and a push to streaming.

But the winds have seemingly changed to have led us all to where we are today. While everyone tries to point to "one reason", as is usual, there are likely a multitude of factors and data that could be at play:

One, we'll never know the details but it seems Disney did finally realize they had to change their model of going at it alone on physical media. Whether it's Sony helping them to drive shared success & economies of scale, or acting in advisory capacity, etc...we'll never know the details of this business arrangement but it's certainly had an impact. To deny this is folly. Generally speaking declining industries consolidate and seek these exact types of mutually beneficial synergies & arrangements.

Two, Disney has realized they have a gold mine of titles in their catalog, all the while the luster has come off of "Gotta be D+" a bit. This has led to a renaissance in restorations and curation of the back catalog. Just look at the rumors of whats getting restored and the pace at which it is happening. Its also not co-incidence the titles in focus for these restorations happen to be many which people have long wanted on 4K UHD. They are also shifting towards a "premium product" (you can certainly disagree re "premium" hence the quotes)...but there is no doubt they feel that Steelbooks and Dolby Vision are a premium product that will allow them to drive price up. So you possibly have cost reduction in #1 above, and now premium price for "premium product" here in #2. Increase top line, decrease expense = duh..."we're interested again, and BTW can help us fund restoration of a lot of our catalog". Monetize the asset, which never made sense to me why they weren't before.

Three, Disney actually reached out to Bill Hunt for some advice. Regardless of what people think, he has actually also helped to give them a pulse of what movies people want on physical. To his credit...Disney seems to have taken his advice and are working through his list. For that he absolutely should be applauded by fans of physical media, and in return Disney seems to be giving him exclusive "rights" to break some news for physical media fans and collectors. It started when he broke the Sony-Disney joint venture, and now is continuing with giving him the exclusive to announce Tombstone, which was #1 on his list. My thought is that we should expect this model to continue and I for one cannot wait to see what is in store for us this year and the next. On his website he's literally hinted that Armageddon, Con Air, Kingdom of Heaven, and I believe Master & Commander are coming. The two Trons seem like a no-brainer.

The Rock's 30th is next year...
