I thought we were just talking about over-rated movies, not necessarily bad ones. I listed 2001: for reasons I stated in earlier post. But my #2 would be Bladerunner. I've never seen it before in its entirety until my BD purchase. I enjoyed it, but do not think it deserves a 5-disc special edition.

Agreed. Entertaining, but very slow in many parts, pq was ok. Didn't love Craig as Bond.

It was in the first movie. Don't forget that they were "ill-tempered".

Just thinking about that movie makes me laugh. IMO, Mike Myers is underrated when it comes to comedy. Don't forget about "So I Married an Axe Murderer" and "Wayne's World". I'd be curious if he had anything to do with the writing in the first Shrek movie. Some pretty good lines in there.

I agree with the people that hated The Host. That was a terrible movie and my choice for overrated.

As for movies like:

Shooter - It's only overrated because it's scarce.

300 - While I don't think it was awesome, it wasn't as bad as some people make it out to be.

Shoot 'Em Up - This one wasn't meant to be logical, it was supposed to be loud, action-packed and in your face. It achieved this.

Of course, opinions will vary.

And the exact same thing can be said about 300.

I watch movies to escape from reality. And 300, among other titles, takes me to a place as far away from reality as possible. Judging by the the titles I currently own you'd think I was a shallow and very typical T&A, shoot 'em up, huge fireball explosion action movie type guy. I do enjoy those films and accept them as pure over-the-top entertainment. Nothing more, nothing less. But I own many titles on standard DVD that are deep, thought provoking and emotional as well. There's a time and a place for the mindless rollercoaster ride action flicks and the thought provoking social commentaries such as American Beauty. The point is to enjoy these titles as they are not required to always be a reflection of ourselves, but rather a look into a place that we could only imagine otherwise.

We're spoiled today with flashy laserbeam filled, cgi alien filled depictions of Extra-Terrestrials. E.T., CE3K, and even Star Wars were fresh and new back then. Now, if the aliens look anything less than the Alien Queen, or less smooth than anything in Men In Black - people just don't get into it it seems.

CE3K wasn't about the aliens, it was the story of the people called to take part in a historic moment.

Hmm, a story movie with an alien - what a novel idea...

Cheers, Doc.
Your comments are right on. I couldn't have put it any better "... people called to take part in a historic moment." That moment was nearly screwed up by the U.S. military take over of the event had it not been for Lacombe who clearly understood the meaning of that historic moment. I think these days we look for too much FX and intense action that we are blind to the real message and storytelling of many great movies like CE3k including 2001:ASO, Contact, and the more recent movie Atonement.

Stalker
Solaris (the Russian original)

Computer imagery and computer assisted imagery are still relatively new and filmmakers are exploring this new territory. This is one reason for the over-emphasis on FX. The intense action is influenced by television commercials, MTV and interacting with computers. People want immediate stimulus and responses to keep their interest. Once upon a time, long ago, people would read lengthy novels instead of watching movies.

Wow. It did get a 92%. That must be because film critics take into account the fact that it is a foreign film and grade accordingly.

Little Men! What a wast of Blu discs!! hahahaha
Thankfully this was only a rental!

Seriously, I haven't really thought about this. All the movies I have bought so far are great. PQ, AQ and the movie ittself. The only one I have been underwhelmed by is We Own the Night. Blind buy, but I will hold on to it, as most likely I will watch it again soon.

Perhaps the critics just enjoyed a good monster movie for a change, rather than a lot of that hollywood crap.

Transformers. Oh - not on BD yet? Well - it will be the most overrated once it is. Could have been a kick-ass action movie. But no, let's make it American Pie with robots! Wouldn't that be funny?!

300. This has to be the most overrated film (at least on these boards) EVER. It was a complete POS. I know many here love the film (so I won't call it a homo-erotic fantasy... oops, I just did) but it was really REALLY bad.

I could care less about the "it was based on a comic-book" logic. Many films were based on SOMETHING (a book, a comic book, a play, etc) but we still judge them as FILMS. 300 was just not a good film.

Are you implying people don't read lengthy novels anymore? I guess Stephen King is going to have it hard now...

Anyways I think reading is another great form of entertainment for the imagination is always in high definition.

Believe what you will but the Spartans did not fight in the buff. Each Spartan had a bronze breastplate, a bronze helmet with cheekplates, greaves, etc...

They did fight in the Buff while training.

Prey tell, what are these 'novels' of which you speak? The name reminds me of an old antiquated networking system.....

Homo-erotic fantasy? Cmon I think it was a good ol slash them kill them all and let god sort them out flick. I think because it was so different looking that your usual hollywood flicks it made it that more interesting to many folks. Hey it had to be pretty popular to make $210 million and even though it came out in Q1 of 2007 it still managed to stay in the US Top 10 grossing movies for the year. Did I like it? Yes and I do own the Blu-ray but to call it the most overrated BD i think is streching it a bit.
