The excessively murky lighting, cheap and pathetic effects, exploitative gore, and slasher movie approach make this one of my most hated films of all time but one thing in particular bothers me the most, this film and the first one clearly suffer from bias and favoritism. Paul W.S. Anderson is a bigger Alien fan so of course they steal every moment in the spotlight in the first one, the Strause brothers are bigger Predator fans so they make the Aliens look absolutely pathetic in comparison. They even had the audacity to mock and make fun of alien fans in the commentary.

I hate both AvP films but I distinctly remember when watching them both years ago that I wanted the aliens to win in each film because of how annoying the humans/predators were. Probably not what they intended...

Well color me infrared! I’ve had AvP R for about 10 years now, and didn’t know about the branching issues. I even got it a few days early as back then I had an early release connection from a video store owner. I see that Jesse’s death was one, but are there other scenes that were affected? I actually really like this movie. I love the dark setting and keeping the monsters in the shadows was a very smart choice in my opinion. I think the movie looks quite slick and would look cheap if it were too brightly lit.
I meant to watch all the Predator movies before Shane Black’s Predator, but I didn’t get around to watching this one again. I saw this theatrically upon release and dragged my seven month pregnant wife to see this and my only complaint is the maternity ward scene. I thought that was a little much. Other than that, I love the hard R violence. The Wolf Predator is a total badass and I wish the Predators and The Predator gave us more from the classic predators as this movie did. Anyways, I’m grateful for the information and I might go Wally World bargain bin diving tomorrow and if I have no luck there, I’ll try to order it from Amazon.

Just to be sure: If I buy the 2015 re-release, will I definitely get the corrected disc without the branching error?

You should, but I can't say for sure. I know I haven't heard of any of these 2-packs having the wrong disc and it's what I got. Although if you buy used, someone might've swapped the Requiem discs out like I did. I prefer solo covers/cases and already had both, but needed that corrected branching.

Just watched the Kill Count video for this on YouTube and it made me remember the branching problem. Glad to see there is a corrected disc now! If anybody else is looking for a replacement, I was able to get Best Buy to price match Wal-Mart's $5 price though chat support.

https://www.walmart.com/ip/Twentieth...Df-W/500123112

Edit: Got the set and confirmed that the disc has correct seamless branching and the V2 code on the underside.

I don't know which has a darker picture. This or Kino's The Hill Have Haves Part 2 blu?

They're both REALLY dark.

Can't speak to the other one, but this movie was designed to be this insanely dark. They even talk in the commentary about shooting it dark and then darkening it even more in post.

Recently did some adjustments with my editing program to fix the darkness problem.

No denying that looks better, but does it look right?
I saw this in the theater twice and it's been as dark as the BD everytime I saw it anywhere. Can you see seems in the creature costumes with the brightness turned up? I recall that being mentioned on the comm. or some extra about why the movie looks like it does, and it's cuz it was done cheap and the costumes weren't good.

So is the DVD any better with the darkness or should I just get the Blu-Ray and be prepared to adjust my TV?

Go the blu-ray and just watch it at night with all the lights off. That's what I did! It's the only way to watch horror & sci-fi anyway, I reckon.

Another question I have that's potentially silly. Is the darkness for this film basically the same as Godzilla (2014) or is it different than that?

1: make sure you get the correct Blu-ray
2: it is very different than the darkness from 2014 Godzilla

Well, this is an interesting update. Recently the creative consultant for the film found CIN Bitmaps that contained the accurate color grading for the film since the too-much darkness of the film was actually a post-production screw up: https://x.com/liamodin/status/182515...VVkEExwHssjaRQ

And then followed up with this update:

So yeah, we may be getting a new 4K remaster for the film after all.

That's interesting since apparently they said in the commentary they wanted it insanely dark (I don't remember but I wouldn't have lied lol). Maybe they didn't mean *that* insanely dark.

The action and gore is relatively entertaining, I'd probably buy it again for a good upgrade.
