Default NetFlix - "We will charge more for Blu-ray rentals"

Wow... this is a damn gutsy move on their part. I, for one, will have to seriously reconsider using NetFlix.

But it does not say how much they will charge... I'll reserve my judgement until we know the price.

I have the Blockbuster pass, and they are promoting that you can rent as many DVDs or Blu-rays for the same price. I feel safe for now.

I volunteered months ago to pay more to rent BD's. So be it, if I can go back to renting more titles without having to wait months.

Why should you expect to rent more expensive material for the same price?

because just like DVD's, you don't own them. I'm only paying more if I own them plain and simple

I'd agree with you typically but things are different with this Netflix rental pass. Not only that people have been able to rent Blu-ray this entire time and now they are going to be forced to pay more. Heck not every boxoffice title is available on Blu-ray yet so you know people are going to have to rent DVD still (Cloverfiled and Wilsons War this week is a prime example)

Ah, but it isn't so simple:

True cost per disc = Unit cost per disc + (unit cost per disc * replacement rate)

For say 100 rentals of a given title unit, which format is actually more expensive?

I mostly use Netflix for TV series ($100 for Twin Peaks /guffaw) and for DVD movies of directors I'm a fan of and want to sample more of their work.

If they want to charge more for Blus and make them more readily available, more power to them. Consumers will vote with their dollars and they'll get their answer.

Default Netflix to add Premium Charge for Blu-ray

Not sure what section I should have posted this in, or if anyone has posted already. Did not see it though. This is per IMDB.COM newswire:

Netflix Reports Record Profits; Stock Sinks

Online movie renters Netflix reported spectacular results in its first quarter but quickly warned investors that they were not likely to last. The company reported profits of $13.4 million on revenue of $326 million, up a whopping 36 percent over the same quarter a year ago when it reported net income of $9.9 million on revenue of $305 million. Everything appeared to have gone right for the company. It was adding subscribers and spending less to acquire them. It ended the quarter with 8.2 million subscribers after adding 764,000 new ones. Nevertheless shares in the company plunged 13 percent as it forecast that its strong earnings performance would not likely last through the remainder of the year as it faced the prospect of consumer cutbacks in entertainment spending due to the recession and the costs it will incur preparing for online delivery of product while competing with the likes of Apple's iTunes Store and Microsoft's Xbox Live service. (In a related development Sony said that it was planning to launch a video service of its own that will allow users of its PlayStation 3 console to download movies and TV shows.) In a conference call with analysts Netflix CEO Reed Hastings also observed that the company will begin charging a "modest premium" for Blu-ray high-definition rentals "sometime this year."

I personally think this is a bad move for netflix, and I hope you Netflix subscribers raise 9 kinds of hell when they try to do this.

Oddly I do not mind if they do this. As long as it means the extra fee is put back into buying more BD so the wait times on some titles go away.

I am not adverse to paying more, but only if the service increase comes as well. If not then I guess I will look into other options.

Still even with an increase I would wager it will still be cheaper to rent 5-6 BDs a month then even buy one and for me thats still a great deal.

Nothing surprises me these days, I've never been a netflix person, looks like I won't be anytime soon.

I would not mind paying more for Blu if queue wait times disappeared completly. It however they increase fees and I still have to wait a month to see a new release, then I would have to re-evaluate the service. Instead of wasting money for online delivery service (which will flop in the long run) they should beef up their inventory stock and work on keeping customers happy.

Some of the "very long waits" just ship, so their "estimated availability" times seem to be WAY OFF
