Not really, it’s not movies just tv. No different to cable channel. A few sprinkled movies on a subscription service won’t change that.

What if everybody storming the beaches at Normandy had said 'eh, what's one soldier more or less gonna matter to the overall outcome, I'm just going to stay in the boat'.

Streaming subscriptions are very popular, but digital purchases are not. Netflix and other streaming subscriptions are a far bigger threat to physical media then digital purchases will ever be. It's been stated repeatedly that streaming subscriptions are where the future is headed, and you're supporting that.
I don’t care what is stated, subscriptions are just the new cable. Those that want to own films (me, you etc..) will continue to do so. The real cause is kids who are indifferent to films and would rather watch cats chasing after a torch or whatever their friends are eating for lunch.

I watched a few films on Film Four last week. Has it changed my habits? No, of course not.

I think that's totally right. I remember reading a TV Guide article in the late 70s or early 80s that talked about how the manufacturers of blank video tapes were surprised that people were recording things and then setting those tapes aside. They expected people to record stuff, watch it and then record over it.

They liked being able to pop The Wizard of Oz in whenever they felt like it instead of waiting for CBS to show it once a year.

And that drove a lot of so-called 'collecting' over the years. Tapes and then discs were a cheap, convenient way of watching what they wanted when they wanted.

It's funny how some people in these discussions will sing the praises of control while denigrating convenience when those things are kind of two sides of the same coin.

They're both about doing what you want when you want.

That's pretty convenient. You get to do what you feel like doing and you can still castigate others for doing the exact same things.

Talk about a win/win.

Just so folks will know, Sony stopped production of βetamax cassettes in March of 2016. HDCam and HDCam SR (here) uses the same cassette shells (here) as the βetamax used. Used quite a few used βetacam tapes from work in my βetamax machine. At work if there was even a small glitch (dropout) in the video the cassette was discarded.

Every single person on here will have watched a film on tv at some point. Daft argument.

So streaming movies isn't going to lead to the extinction of physical media and the end of movie making itself anymore?

Now it's just like watching TV?

Cool.

Wendell, your prediction may have some legs. It seems Disney+ will have 2019 films streaming exclusively on its service. I think you may be right about Disney pulling out of MA in the future. Also, just read that the vault films will be scrapped and Disney will make all their animation (films) available on the service. Also, I wonder if codes for Disney films will be scrapped now. Surely they have to be?

Streaming is massive but cable and Satelite carried movie channels. They were a big deal. It’s collcting that is dying. It’s those pesky kids. They don’t care about films OR collecting media.

It’s the end times. Might as well just enjoy all these subscription services or cable or whatever. When Blu-ray dies, part of me dies.

So streaming movies is no big deal anymore?

I might owe you an apology. It appears that slope might be slipperier than I thought.

I could see MA being integrated within Disney+ that allows users to access the special features and whatnot. But who knows. The big question will be to see what the release window Disney uses for bringing theater films to their streaming service.

Not seeing that logic at all. I use Apple Music to check out new music, which usually leads to a purchase of a band I would not have heard of otherwise.

How many CDs have you bought this year? How many do you have in your collection? How much vinyl do you own?

My Dude, you are looking in the wrong direction.

Just to be clear: supporting music subscriptions will lead to the extinction of CDs but movie and TV subscriptions are just fine and you have no problem supporting them?

But some of us have stopped supporting cable/satellite TV and have never supported streaming subscriptions. You clearly continue to support both.

That pretty much seems to be Steedeel's attitude. Streaming is terrible and will lead to the end of films as we know them... but the streaming that he does is perfectly fine. Throw in something about kids today ruining everything for the full effect.

I do exact the same thing as well as I have done it for years. I have watched lots of movies & TV shows on broadcast TV which subsequently resulted me in having a good few of them owned as physical media purchases on DVD & Blu-ray.

Just last week; I was watching The Secret Life of Pets on RTÉ One HD last Saturday. I also watched movies from either RTÉ One & RTÉ2 HD like Alfred Hitchcock's classics like Rear Window & North by Northwest, The Fugitive, Blazing Saddles, X-Men Days of Future Past, Black Beauty.

I also watched shows like Krypton on E4 from the UK. Railway Journey Series from Michael Portillo on the BBC.

There was a new Irish historical drama series which aired on RTÉ in January called Resistance which was part of RTÉ's season of programmes on The Irish War of Independence. The prequel to that is called Rebellion which is a drama series about Ireland's Easter Rising of 1916. There is also an RTÉ documentary series about The Tales of the Irish Revolution that was narrated by Cillian Murphy.

All of this type of stuff could allow me to buy some of this stuff as physical media copies in future. Watching stuff on regular TV does continue drive the demand for purchases of titles in the physical media market in future. So I'm still confident that I will buy them in future.
