All you have to do is head over to Caps-a-holic and start looking at the full image comparisons in each image to just see how awful the Criterion disc looks.

Looks like you're watching it through a layer of dust and haze. It may be serviceable but it's not a good release. Especially at Criterion's stupid prices.

Yes I've seen them. I can tell you that the Criterion looks way better in motion than what capaholics shows in pictures. The Subkultur details are lost in the pictures due to blown out highlights. Colors look too colorful like I'm watching an animated movie. Some positives are better contrast and a little more details. But you can't fully judge how a movie looks from pictures. I use capaholics for reference only.

Hey Dr Herbert. I've been browsing the forum for a bit and noticed that we seem to have similar taste in older movies. You don't use Blu-ray.com to store your movie catalog? It'll be nice to browse to find some good old 80s and 90s movies that I've never seen before.

Off to watching Scanners 2..

You need to hit the 70’s and 80’s.

The more I look at both the Subkultur disc looks like an older, blown-out transfer with a touch of sharpening.

That "green cast" doesn't look like much of a green cast either and more like film. I feel like they scanned an IP and what do you know, thats' exactly what they did upon restoration detail inspection! The Subkultur one looks like some kind of attempt was made to "naturalize" everything and it doesn't look right.

I absolutely cannot stand teal and green revisionist tints and I'm erring on the side that's not the case with this one. At least for the most part. idk

Yes, the scan being an I.P. is an assumption and pointing out qualities that come with it is also an assumption, and parsing out which is preferred is not personal taste. You got me! I'm done for.

Some people don't come around here to discuss or trade ideas but instead opt to strawman and ad-hominem their way thru everything. It's a sad way to live!

The Criterion release would be the best...if not for that revisionist grading. It's undoubtedly been revised to be more green/teal than it was originally. There's not any evidence of it being this way prior to the Criterion release.

Criterion even confirmed that this is how Cronenberg prefers it to look now, and he used no reference whatsoever to grade the film (think about that for a moment). There's dozens of pages already discussing this in this thread, so I see little point re-hashing it again. The bottom line is there are multiple options to choose from in this scenario, so go with whatever is to your liking.

Supervised by director David Cronenberg, this new digital transfer was created in 2K resolution on an ARRISCAN film scanner from a 35mm interpositive at Vision Globale in Montreal; the color grading was done at Deluxe Toronto. Thousands of instances of dirt, debris, scratches, splices, warps, warps, jitter, and flicker were manually removed using MTI's DRS and Pixel Farm's PFClean, while Digital Vision's Phoenix was used for small dirt, grain, and noise management. The original monaural soundtrack was remastered at 24-bit from the 35mm Dialogue/Music/Effects magnetic track. Clicks, thumps, hiss, hum, and crackle were manually removed using Pro Tools HD, AudioCube's integrated workstation, and iZotope RX 3.

It simply came up again; some change their thoughts on things. I'm simply saying it looks like an I.P. (which it is) moreso than completely revisionist grading despite what others have come around to say. I'm not stating a fact or anything, other than it's an I.P.

The Subkultur disc does look overbaked and a tad more processed/flat and less natural to me tho and I've always felt that way.

This all started up again because HD Goofnut simply couldn't accept that some people like the Criterion transfer.

HD Goofnut when people say they like the Criterion Blu-ray:

To my eyes, the Criterion disc just looks really ****ing dull, like somebody forgot to turn the lights on. I know folks like to bring up the fact that Cronenberg signed off on it, but he also signed off on the remaster of Shivers, which turned out to be conformed to the R-rated cut.

Anyway, I'm hoping we eventually get a more nuanced UHD release which doesn't align with the extremes of the various Blu-ray releases.

I used to not care for it at all but the more I looked at and compared it to non-I.P. sourced transfers with revisionist pee-pee gold modern-teal blanket tints I started coming around to it.

If that's hard for some ppl to swallow as if it's an advocation of fact idk what to tell them! lmao
