I've only done it for The Incredible Hulk 4K right now. I plan to eventually do it for the DC animated movies since Target has only been doing standard Blu-ray releases, however none of the films have dropped to a price that's good enough to justify re-buying. For the Marvel films I did end up re-buying in 4K Steelbook because they used the poster art.

Edit: Forgot I have The Killing Joke 4K too in the steelbook. I do have Assault on Arkham on 4K as well but missed out on getting the Blu steelbook for that one.

If the 4k steelbook is garbage or if there is not 4k steelbook, I put the 4k disc in my blu ray steelbook. Might as well. A lot of 4k steelbooks come with a blu ray anyway. When the 30th anniversary remastered Highlander blu ray came out (which did not have a steelbook), I just put the disc for that in the steelbook that had been previously released. For foreign steelbooks if I prefer the American disc I put the American disc in.

If a steel only has one slot, then I leave the blu-ray disc in there and put the 4K in a binder with other discs that don't have multi-slot steels or no steel at all. Unless it's a 4K disc that has the special features on it, in which case I'll do the switch.
This is exactly what I do. I never get rid f the BD because they usually house all the extras.

I’m sure it’s been asked numerous times and if so I apologize...

Is there a way to create a custom Steelbook? I found this Mile 22 SB and it was amazing. And ever since I’ve wanted to recreate it...

Thanks for any help. And sorry again

I'm new to collecting so hopefully some of you with much more experience can provide me with an answer to this question. I mainly want to focus on 4K Steelbooks but this would definitely apply to Blu-ray Steelbooks as well.

I'm wondering if collectors pay attention to different pressings of 4K or Blu-ray Steelbooks, as some would with vinyl records. Is there a way to tell whether a 4K or Blu-ray Steelbook is a first pressing? For example, I guess I would consider the first pressing to be kind of like a Day One release, where there may be different inserts or artwork than on a new batch of the same version months down the road.

The focus of my collection is Steelbooks and collector's editions, so I'm basically wondering if first pressings of these exist or if there are only a certain number of these released when the title launches and is sent to retailers and then it goes out of print. I have heard that Steelbooks are only released in certain numbers and they are all the same and once they sell out, they're gone and usually aren't restocked. I hope I can get some confirmation on this.

I hope this makes sense. Basically, I'm wondering if pressings are a thing in the Steelbook collectors world and if they are, if collectors focus on getting the Day One copies. Hopefully someone can explain the process, if there is one. Thanks!

Steelbooks are typically done in mass print runs. If multiple regions use the same design, it’s called a shared run.
No real “first printing” with steelbooks.

Steelbooks vary with country and store, but will always be the same Steelbook if bought form the same store in the same country whether its day one or 6 months down the line. Unless its an entirely new release. Like is happening with Man of steel currently: New Steelbook release, which will likely be different to the previous 2 that have been released already.

You do need to pay attention to where the steelbook is being sold, store and country, as the actual steelbook art may be the same one for many stores in many countries, the contents will not.

Stores like Zavvi in the U.K or Best Buy may get the same steelbook, but may have different things inside. Digital codes for U.K only vs U.S. or a different country based insert in some cases.

Also in some countries the steelbook releases may have the same artwork, same logos, even the 4K UHD branding on some, but will only have Blu-rays inside instead of the 4K discs, and may not have the digital codes at all, or localized ones instead.

Normally when restocking happens its still the same steelbook with same contents if bought from the same store. Not all stores restock once initial runs are sold out though.

What you may be interested in are the so-called Premium SteelBook releases.

These are more expensive SteelBooks with extras such as art cards, stickers, buttons, etc. that often sell for 2 or 3 times more money.

They are often numbered as well so that each copy is 'unique'.

Here seems as good a place as any for this question guys, so here goes-from looking at other threads about the issue, it seems there's no way of getting hold of the slips/j cards/etc, if you have lost or misplaced them, unless someone is willing to trade or give them away. For people that have tried to get one of these that they lost, how did they go about it? I'm looking for the j card (that was a bit paper actually) that came along with the Lego Batman Movie steelbook in the UK, where would be the best place to ask on the forum, please? I'd prefer not to go down the trouble of getting a new copy just for it. Haven't really got anything to trade, but be willing to offer a bit of money to a person, or a charity of their choice, for example.

There's no way to purchase them just the j-cards/slips directly, so getting them off an individual or getting lucky that one is on eBay would be your only options.

Cheers, what I thought. With that in mind, where's the best place on the forum to seek these out? Unfortunately on eBay, doesn't look like there's any of the j cards, etc, that I would need getting sold on there. Though I suppose they could always pop up. Anywhere you'd recommend on this forum to post my request? Page of the film itself on the forum?

I would probably go here https://forum.blu-ray.com/forumdisplay.php?f=142 and just make a new Thread listing your wants.

Just wanted to add that there might be variations to the finish and embossing/debossing with the same artwork. Zavvi and Best Buy will often have the same artwork for Marvel and Star Wars releases, but different finishes and in some cases one will have embossing or debossing while the other doesn't.

Hello all,

I have a bit of a dilemma here. I ordered The Dark Tower Steelbook from BBY online, and it arrived today. Sadly, there are a couple of large dings on the front of it. I'm tempted to return it at a local store, but the price is actually lower than the slipcover version a the moment, and these are only available for shipping.

What do you all think?

Should I just keep it, or get a refund?

I'm kinda torn here because the whole idea of getting a steelbook is for collecting purposes, but having a steelbook with two dings in it, kinda ruins that collectability factor.

Any thoughts or input would be greatly appreciated.

You can try your luck ordering and returning from Best Buy. It will be cheaper, but if you really want one in collectible condition, you should consider buying from a fellow collector here or from someone on eBay who guarantees the condition.

Default Best Buy Price Increase on Steelbook

I looked at Best Buy 4K Steelbooks and looks like they did a big update last night. They jacked up a lot of the Steelbook Prices to $45. Admittedly most are out of stock/unavailable but it is a worrisome trend, especially when they introduced the Blade Steelbook at $45. Now might be the time I am no longer a Steelbook collector if this trend continues.
P.S. I know Blade is now $30 but when they first showed it, it started at $45 which is a lot for a single catalog movie from the 90’s.

I can't think of a movie steelbook I would be willing to buy for $45 bucks.

$45 is a placeholder price point or the full retail on the item. The prices eventually drop before release.

A lot of the Pixar and Disney show higher prices. Toy Story 1-4, Men in Black, Nutcracker, Birds of Prey, Frozen, GoG, Thor, Doctor Strange, Finding Nemo, Lion King, Captain Marvel, Incredibles 2 and Last Jedi show $40. Malificent, Antman, Beauty and the Beast, Up, Brave, Onward, Zootoopia, Tangled, Jungle Book, Ratatouille, Moana, Cinderella, Dumbo, Black Panther, Princess and the Frog, Frozen 2, Cars 2 and Big Hero 6 show $45. Just saying. Hopefully I am overreacting.
