Yeah, I hear ya. ;-)

I was so bewildered by his Hobbit, and why he suddenly seemed so out of his depth with a large-scale adventure fantasy flick. I've read the claims of how circumstances locked him into filming a script that wasn't his and that he wasn't very happy with -- though you have to ask, since he was producer, why was he letting a script he was unhappy with go into production in the first place?! It may be that GdT could have pulled off some of the sequences PJ didn't do so well with, though it seems that the more egregious parts of the final films were sequences added to make it more PJ-ish, after GdT left the project and PJ decided to pad it out into three films.

For me, the best bits of the LotR trilogy (of which I'm a fan overall) are the Hero's Journey themes and sequences; the "humour", by comparison, is differing shades of cringeworthy. I'm swimming against the larger stream, but I'm not at all a fan of the schoolboyish Jackson humour.

And the problem with his Hobbit, I think, is that what little of a comparable Hero's Journey there is in the book got overwhelmed in the way it was adapted to film by Jackson's version of snot-drip humour and video-game cut-scene sequences of contrived action. There was very little to bring out the more sterling side of Jackson's nature, and what there was got slathered over with poorly-judged jokes about what was down a dwarf's trousers and a constant parade of snivelling grotesques -- all in a trilogy that had no story-derived reason for running so long.

Ehh, hobbits all look alike to them.

If only Jackson watches the Maple Films edit we might get a good cut.

I'd love the Maple Films edit in DTS-HD and 3D.

Won't be of much use, as LOTR was mastered on a 2K DI. And for any HDR-like regrading, they would need supervision by DoP Andrew Lesnie. Who died last year. So no new transfer for UHD. So no reason for UHD at all. Which is good.

As far as Lucas-esque revisionism is concerned: from the audio commentaries I perceived that PJ is rather reluctant to make any real changes. Which is also good.

Oh, please. The Hobbit movies are more accurate to the book and Tolkien's other Middle-earth lore than the LotR movie are to the book.

Wouldn't go that far but The Hobbit movies are good, they're just not really an adaptation of The Hobbit book. But I've discussed this ad nauseum in that/those thread(s).

However, the LOTR films are more entertaining? Why is that you ask? Because it is written more like a fantasy epic action film instead of a fantasy comedy.

Assuming UHD BD continues to grow well (so far, very good sales for the launch) I would have to believe Warner/New Line will find a way for these to come to UHD BD with Atmos. Lesnie's passing will not stop them from regrading in HDR and there would be a wider color gamut even if they didn't do HDR. Most certainly 2K DIs as I cannot see them essentially remaking the movies with all new CG and 4K source. On any rate, I am more than happy with the current Blus and they look great on a big screen.

I bought The Children of Húrin some days ago, to finally complete my J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle Earth collection. Have some of you read the story? Could it be adapted in a movie?

Not a chance that the Tolkien estate will allow another movie to be made. Christopher Tolkien despises all of the films, the film rights to The Lord of the Rings were sold long ago or else I doubt we'd even have any movies.

It's a shame though, Children of Hurin is a pretty good book.

You're kidding, right? Since when did the filmmakers being dead ever preclude a newly timed master of X film being made? LOTR and the Hobbitses will make it onto UHD (regardless of the 2K mastering), I'm pretty sure of that.

That's dumb, as I'm sure the release of the movies boosted sales of the book series like crazy! I can understand if he hated the Hobbit tho!

Christopher disowned his own son for a time (Tolkien's grandson) because he supported Peter Jackson during production of the LOTR films, so I don't really care about his opinion that much. Tolkien was a genius but no book is worth breaking apart your entire family.

I'd love a mega set with both the theatrical & extended cuts of all 6 films bundled together with all of the extras from all the various releases. Include all of the cut footage that did make it into the extended cuts as well.

New Line could remaster the theatrical cut of FOTR and fix the colour timing and black crush in the extended cut whilst they're at it.

I'd pay good money for a box set like that.

I'd buy that if they included the 3D copies of the Hobbit films, but if they didn't I'd still buy it because I have them in 3D already.
