Couldn't have timed that Date Earned any better if tried

I can't wait for the next part. Loved that they made alterations to this game, Zack not dying for example. Not only was it a remake in terms of graphics and gameplay but in story too. Gonna be interesting to see where they take it from here.

I am gonna be the voice of opposition, here. This game is not for me. The combat and menus are more muddled than they need to be. Especially when you first start. Most of the story changes for me, so far, have been negative. What’s with the Dementors? Do I need to call Azakaban? Why am I wasting time looking for someone’s cats? Why do Cloud’s pants look like he just started crapping in them one day, never stopped and never takes them off to let it all out? I bought this not knowing I wasn’t even getting an actual complete game.

If you’re gonna give me a mostly linear RPG, at least give me really fun combat and not just mashing the square button a lot, while trying to operate camera controls straight out of 1997, switching to my other teammates only when I need to use ranged attacks or knock enemies off that are way too “bind” happy. Don’t give me super corny dialog, completely overacted with ridiculous over the top voice-acting. Some of the really silly dialog in the original game only worked BECAUSE it was text only. And because games just weren’t written as well, back then. If you’re going to rewrite, hire some actual writers to fix that stuff up.

If you enjoy this. Don’t get me wrong. I’m happy for you. Just extremely disappointed for myself. Personally, I never feel the need to say or think a game is great just because the company releasing it tells me so. I will not be sticking around for part 2.

I enjoyed FFVII Remake. I look forward to Part II. Hope we don’t have to wait 5 years. The mainline XVI game I believe is made from a different studio. The ones that did XIV.

Yeah 16 is produced by 14’s producer and uses the same engine

I enjoyed 7R, specially the combat, but loathed the ending

It means because everyone loved the original FF7 and this is considered a Remake, everyone should love it, too. But, in reality, if this were not set in the FF7 Universe with characters that people know and love, it would be considered just a mediocre action RPG with boring, extremely linear progression and tedious combat. The maps are literally linear corridors where the only branching paths all lead to dead end treasure chests. The side quests are repetitive and uninspired. When you’re not controlling your party members, they will sometimes just stare at a rock. They’re absolutely useless in most scenarios. The only way they actually help you is if you equip them with auto-heal Materia.

Beyond that, most of the voice-acting is sub-par and the majority of the dialog is very poorly written. So, if I’m supposed to judge it on story alone, even that is jacked up.

To me, this seems like a game that they started and completely redesigned multiple times (oh, for like 5+ years maybe) then they finally decided it had gone on too long and they had to put something out, so this is what we got.

The game definitely had its issues, but the combat was not one of them (for me). The materia management could have been a little more refined, maybe, with saved load-outs you can switch to or something. A lot of the side-quests though 'were' pretty poor, though, as in terrible.

I didn't have any issues with the main story cut scenes and dialogue, personally. It was about what I was expecting, and mostly engaging and great looking. I think there are compromises visually here & there which should get resolved in their inevitable PS5 boosted version/ eventual upgrade, but generally I was very impressed with what the game did on a 7 year old base PS4 tech. I can't remember what I rated it on Metacritic. A strong 7 or light 8, probably.

Completed this on Saturday.

As for the story:
[Show spoiler]Last spring I kept hearing about something controversial in the ending. When Barrett was "killed" I thought that was it but that was soon un-done by the whispers. The real controversy seems to be with how big and grand the story is already in part 1. I get the feeling FFVII is going to be finished in 3 parts.

I'm a big fan of 90s rpgs and the use of a world map. Part I didn't need one but I'd be shocked if FFVII Remake II has a world map. I think it will likely use fewer locations than the original and employ some sort of fast travel.

This is why I believe Part 2/3 is going to be exclusively next gen, the way the PS5 is able to seamlessly stream data is perfect for the needs that this overworld map will need in the next part of the story. The load times were pretty bad on the PS4 for this game and this is all an enclosed corridor environment so I honestly couldn't imagine trying to do an open world on PS4.

The most interesting theory I read about this game though is that it isn't actually
[Show spoiler]us playing the original game, that's why story beats are slightly different to the original.

The theory is that the original game we played was a vision Aerith had of the fate of the planet and events of FFVII Remake alter slightly as we are trying to change the outcome of the catastrophe in the first game.

There are much more detailed explanations online.

I like the idea of the devs using the remake as a meta storytelling device to actually blend the two games and be different even though they are mostly the same.
