X Men Apocalypse and Deadpool are shown as native 4K but while they're shot digitally at an appropriate resolution, they have 2K VFX (and are VFX heavy).
Blade Runner 2049 is shown as native 4K : it's actually shot in 3.4K but it was then slightly upscaled to 4K and all the VFX were rendered at 4K too.

The Maze Runner was partially shot in 2K but is shown as Native 4K.
The Amazing Spider Man 2 was shot mostly in 35mm, with 2K VFX, but is also shown as Native 4K.
The Revenant was partially shot at 3.4K : also shown as native 4K.
The Last Witch Hunter and Sicario were both shot at 3.4K but are shown as Native 4K too.

The current situation isn't a binary one, so it's really weird to me to treat the specs in a binary way. It's over-simplifying a situation that started in exactly the other way : by having websites like blu-ray.com calling out studios for actually selling UHD based on partially upscaled masters.

And now, The Martian 4K is plainly shown as native 4K ?

Also, Wonder Woman has been finished in 2K but is shown as Native 4K, unlike most DI 2K movies.

So it's hard to understand how we can have such a clear-cut spec while the behind-the-scenes technicalities are way more circonvoluted.
You would be causing far too much consumer confusion. Most are not technically minded like many are on sites like these. If it looks good, sounds good that's all they care about.

Which is why I'm asking : I doubt the general audience is the target of this dedicated website, so why dumbing-down an information to the point of making it factually incorrect ?

I was ready upgrade to 4K, have about 10 movies already. And I would buy another 10 - 15 on BF, but now I'm not sure. Dolby Vision is holding me back. The TV/players I was looking at don't support it, but cost less. Any opinions? Prices will go down, but I don't want to wait another year either.

The TCL 55P605 is a decent budget TV with good reviews (if that's what your price range is). It has HDR10 and Dolby Vision. Better to get it at Best Buy rather than Amazon (P607) if you have to play panel roulette and need to exchange it. I have the 607 version right now as a tied me over, and with Dolby Vision encoded discs, the set shines given its price range. HDR is quite decently bright in the specular highlights. Blacks are pretty solid. Colors have depth and pop. It does suffer from some flash-lighting since it's a FALD display.

I would recommend getting an extended warranty or use your credit card as they usually extend the warranty by at least a year (depending on your issuing bank).

Once you are able to buy a better DV display (by then HDR10+ may be out), just relegate it to a bedroom or other secondary room.

Then get the Oppo 203. Again, that's what I have. No regrets. Absolutely worth it.

Don't look back.

As always, not everything is "settled" with this stuff and it gets annoying trying to make sure your gear suports every little damned thing out there. Multiple HDR formats, HDMI specs, AVR compatibilities, etc, etc.

And, NOT every UHD release is really "good". Some catalog titles have been trivial upgrades at best. Remember, at this stage everyone owns pretty much everything they like on blu-ray so 99% of UHD purchases for older stuff would be a rebuy. The "upgrade" has to be worth it, IMO.

Might be a dumb question, but does anyone adjust their brightness so that the black bars match the black levels of the movie they’re watching?

So if my TV is HDR10 capable, can it be updated to HDR10+ via a firmware flash, or does it require newer hardware?

It really depends on the internal circuitry guts of your set and what the manufacturer has in mind for this particular model.

10+ is really a Samsung end-around to avoid fees to license Dolby Vision.

Sony has not said anything about HDR10+, as so far they have made a commitment to support DV, your 940E is supposed to get a DV update maybe late Dec this year, or early next year. You will need a new 2018 DV capable player for DV, or you could pick up an Oppo 203 which is already getting field tested for DV since the June activation.

It's all just computer code really nowadays, if you have a 10-bit panel and enough horsepower under the hood (which you do). So you can hopefully sit tight until DV drops, and then see what your set is capable of. Cheers!

Note: Sony told insiders at CEDIA in Sept the X800 is not getting a DV update. Period. Pass it along...

Vizio makes great panels. This years M series is gaining excellent reviews and features Dolby Vision and will support HDR10+. They are very accurate in their calibrated picture modes also.

Excellent. That would be a big step towards a universal HDR display. Can you supply a link to this information.

My temporary Vizio a couple years ago had dreadful color timing. Was either too warm on movie mode or too cool on standard; drove me loony tunes. Also the grey scale sucked and everything looked dirty as a result. Even my briefly owned cheap Samsung KU6300 was a massive improvement.

That said maybe they have gotten better the last two years, guess I couldn't say.

Correct they did, I had the same panel you did but this years M series is substantially better and more accurate. I measure a dE of 1.7 for greyscale in SDR and HDR which is extremely accurate out of box. There simply is no need to calibrate my M65-EO. It’s not as bright as your panel but it gets plenty bright. HDR on the panel is gorgeous but more importantly very accurate. Vizio has come a long way even from last years panels which is why I waited for this years. And the price is sweet too

I forget where I read it, I believe directly from Vizio. I spoke with a rep at Vizio to confirm.
