Watching the UHD for this for the first time in quite a while.

I remember enjoying the PQ for this at launch, and I still find it extremely impressive now.

I remember specific users having a fractured butthole over the lack of HDR and mildly elevated black levels--but I can't be bothered with such superficialities. Especially when the production design of this film looks so damn impressive.

As god awful and horribly written the third act of this film gets; What Rupert Sanders, along with the amazing artists at WETA accomplished with all of the costume and prop designs in this film, are nothing short of immaculate. Had there been even a reasonably intelligent script to compliment the strong visuals, this film could've aged very well even as a 'genre' film. But it's so hard to get pass the impossibly stupid 'reveal' in toward the end of the film.

But yeah, if nothing else, WETA can at least make this a film worth watching based on the quality of their work alone.

Watched this yesterday. I saw it in theaters but fell asleep as it was a late showing and I had worked a long shift that day. I think the same thing happened when it came out on video as I didn't remember over half of the movie watching it yesterday.

I thought it looked absolutely fantastic and the Atmos mix was excellent. I enjoyed the film a lot more than I thought I would, despite some obvious shortcomings (and having seen the original at least 5+ times). I'm glad I decided to revisit it!

I finally broke down and upgraded my BD of this. Despite the controversy surrounding this film, I absolutely loved it. I thought Scar Jo did a fine job, and the production values are top notch.

I was especially enamored by the soundtrack, and was crushed when a physical release of it was canceled. No explanation, nothing. They just decided to not release it, for seemingly no reason. Bummer!

Digital code from this up for trade.

What about the PQ? Worth the upgrade? I liked the movie but didn't love it, torn on double dipping...

It’s a “dark” movie HDR-wise but save for some soft VFX and that it’s a 2K DI, that doesn’t stop the 6K Alexa footage from looking nearly 4K and the better color gamut and improved compression make it worth it, if you like the movie enough anyway.

Lorne Balfe leaked two versions of his work on the soundtrack, one “for the fans” that had an unused credits track that was essentially his “theme” for Motoko, and a more “wide” release he posted to his Twitter that swapped it out for something else IIRC. Both at studio quality HiRes lossless, both since deleted but you can probably find them on pirating sites or torrents or whatever.

It never got a release because Clint Mansell originally did the music but Balfe was brought on to replace him. You can still hear some of Mansell’s music in the movie and in bonus features, and it sounds like Balfe took a few of his themes and reworked them too, so the credit and licensing was likely a huge mess and it was easier to cancel the release.

Same here.

A highly enjoyable movie which I frequently like to revisit (both the fine looking UHD as well as the 3D Blu-ray with its amazing 3D presentation).

Wow! I had no idea about any of this. Thank you for the information. Sadly, we'll never get that soundtrack, and that's a bummer.

I don't do torrents and the like, because I'm "one of those guys" that feels artists should be paid for their work, and the more people who buy physical media, the longer it will survive.

Has anyone experienced disc rot with the GitS UHD disc? I notice there were a few comments about the disc suddenly not working but not a lot of discussion about it. Was this issue rectified in later pressings?

I got mine when it was released (US disc) and have watched it regularly since then. Fortunately, no issues here on my end. Hope it stays that way...

I recommend this movie for $7.99. If you're a super fan of the anime and expect that you're not gonna get it, but it has lovely visuals, a unique spin on the story and some good action and drama. Nothing OMG amazing, but very underrated IMO.

It's the same encode, but the Japanese disc has the dub with the original 1995 GitS cast reprising many roles for their live-action counterparts. It's a really neat novelty.

Worth noting this Japanese track is also on the probably significantly cheaper UK release.

I enjoyed it in the theatre, but I consider it redundant to be in my collection.
But who knows, maybe I'll pick it up cheap someday.

I enjoyed the movie SO much more with the JPN dub.

you mean, you want it to be cheaper than $7.99?

No, I mean I just haven't felt it necessary at this point. But maybe someday I'll want to watch it again. That day is not today.

I just redeemed the UHD digital copy in VUDU and it included an HDX copy of Aeon Flux for free!
