I picked up the DVD today. (142 minutes, Dual Layer format). They had to go into the back and get it for me. Disc Made in Mexico.

Target also has The Shining on sale in BD as a single, and as a "Triple Feature," with 2001 and A Clockwork Orange. I already have 2001. For movies I really respect, I like to make a statement by having them individually. I have Planet of the Apes... but no other Apes, regardless of the discount for a multiple set.

100% incorrect, sorry Charlie.

Default A Continuity Question

So, after the Torrances have arrived at the Overlook Hotel, Stuart Ullman asks "has your luggage been brought in?"
And in the frame in the background is their luggage stacked up, including Danny's 3-wheeler... (19:54)

So, my continuity question is.... "Could this amount of luggage have been transported with the Torrances... in a VW Beetle???

If you freeze frame the few pics of the car, on the way to the hotel (with the family), there is no luggage rack on the car.

Yeah, that is weird. The movie is designed to mess with your mind. Kind of like the "Gold Room" seems to be way too big to fit inside the hotel based on what we see of the outside shots of the hotel. And how Ullman's office has a window that clearly shows the outside, but right before Jack goes into the office for the job interview you can see that there is a hallway behind the office and it's impossible for the window in the office to lead outside.

However, in the case of luggage, I guess they could've had some arrangement with a moving company to bring the luggage separately in a bigger vehicle. It's not pointed out. In fact, Ullman's very question "has your luggage been brought in?" seems to indicate that someone else could've been responsible for their luggage.

I know.... on the way to the interview, the mountains are to the right of the VW. On the way up with the family, the mountains are on the left. I know there's twists and turns around mountains to get places.... yet the juxtaposition is stark.

They could have, but it's pure speculation, of course, since there's no direct connection, on film, to a second vehicle in their trip up. At a functioning hotel like that, everyone arriving would get their luggage brought in by the hotel employees...

Perhaps screenplay annotations might fill that in...

Being that they are going to be staying for the entire winter, it is natural to think that they have to have separate transportation for personal belongings, especially given the size of their car.

I don't think it is done intentionally to mess with anybody's mind as it is a natural assumption for many to make otherwise you would have to over explain any small conversation by adding another scene just to put in it context.

The luggage was transported by plane by arrangement of the hotel proprietor to help the Torrance's move in.
He is asking if the assistants have done their jobs.

Yes, that's right, Ullman mentions something about a plane leaving to his assistant just before they get to Mr. Torrance, who is waiting in the lobby. So we must assume the Overlook has an airstrip nearby, where the "jet set" could fly in and out...

Every transfer, no matter how good, must face the wrath of John Q. Internet at some point.

I don't care if it's reference quality.

Eventually...it will suck.

This is my favorite movie of all time and I think the blu ray looks pretty good but the one thing that I can't stand is all the telecine wobble, Im guessing that is something inherent to the original film print but if not it is kind of a shame because its most noticeable in some of my favorite scenes like the opening for instance and several more times it pops up as well. Other than that I don't really remember seeing any big issues.

Telecline wobble will be due to the old fashioned transfer process used I would have thought, rather than any issue with the source. This, along with other Kubrick films, will surely get a 4k remaster at some point which would sort the problem...
