Thanks for help BD!
The front-firing subs come in three colors (black, cherry, & maple), are more attractive, have more powerful amplifiers, and are more expensive. If you can afford them, buy them. Two subs are better than one in almost all cases.

Default Hello

I am a basshead. I have four Cerwin Vega Dx9s for my mains, I just built a DIY enclosure for 6 car audio 15s and the most I could get out of them was 122db. Needless to say it was a failed project. My question is, How you rate 4 of these hd 12s or hd 15s compared to a SVS in a 200sq foot HT room?
Thank you in advance.

With a single sub, even a high quality and expensive sub, you will get cold and hot spots in the room and very uneven bass. If you are lucky and patient, you may be able to position the single sub in a location that will give you decent bass for your primary listening position. However, if you move slightly to the left or right, your bass sound will not be as good.

Two or four subs in a room will work better than a single sub in almost all situations. The point of multiple subs is not to get louder and boomier bass sound although you can do that. The main reason for multiple subs is get rid off the cold and hot spots and get more even and smoother bass across the room for all listening positions.

Although a single Acoustic Audio sub may not compete as well with a single high quality and expensive sub from the companies you mentined. Four Acoustic Audio HD-SUB12 or HD-SUB15 or RW models will work better than a single more expensive sub.

If you are going to play your bass sound over 100dB, you will damage your hearing. Please don't do it for any extented period.

Get two HD-SUB12 or HD-SUB15. If you make an offer on Ebay, you may save $20-$30 per subwoofer. The links are post #1. Your total cost for two subwoofers will be less than $400.

Thank you. I noticed in your list of equipment you have bose 901 for surrounds, did I read that right? If so, what are you powering them with?

Yes, I do have a pair of 901's. I prefer to use them in a separate room, but I have speakers for every room.

I use a Carver TFM 45 amplifier to power them. The amp is rated 375 watts per channel for 8 ohms.

And your HD 12 can keep up with them?

Yes, the HD-SUB12 keeps up with the rest of the equipment. It is pretty loud and I have turned its level down to less than 40%. Read Post #3 in this thread for my review and frequency measurement.

A few days ago, I replaced the driver with a more expensive driver from Elemental Designs just for fun. There was a minor improvement. Nothing earth shattering. The ED driver cost me $125. Considering that the HD-SUB 12 can be had for around $170, it is a fantastic deal. A sub amp alone can cost more than that.

Well I put in a bid yesterday for a AA RW 12, I was going to go with the HD SUB12 but BD reminded me of the pets and kids problem!

Of course as soon as I put up the bid the wife told me we're tight on money and need to pay off a $600 CC bill so I'm sure if I win she'll throw a fit! But hey, if I win I'll be able to sleep on the couch with my sub right!

Forgot to mention, that this is for home theater use only, not music. You think 2 of these HDs are better then a set of the pa 120 everyone is talking about or the Dayton SUB-120 HT ? I assume I should build risers also. Thank you again.

They're cheaper than the PA-120, and judging from everything, looks like they're about equal in performance. I love my PA-120 but that's a great way to save some dough if you like the aesthetics.

Looks mean nothing to me, my highest concern is the best audio output.
