^Fox did a great reproduction of their Alien movies special features on blu-ray, not sure why it should be a bigger issue with LoTR.

We're talking Warner here. They won't spend a dime if they don't have to. Plus, LOTR isn't really their own baby, they just inherited it from New Line.

Hutt that was my basic takeaway from my discussions with Pellerin.

Especially considering.. didn't Peter Jackson have new material he wanted to include with that big extended edition set (the one with the shelf), but WB said they weren't going to pay for it?

Ironic because I would have definitely gotten it if there was new on-disc content included. I wonder if they lost a lot of money on that set.

Yeah, it's not a deal-breaker for me, the SD content. I think the 'fix' would be akin to what Fox and/or Baz did for Romeo + Juliet and Moulin Rouge!, which was window-box the video itself (and no need for DisneyView type borders or garish effects, a simple black window-box) to contain some of the more disagreeable pixelation and reduce the loss in quality.

I have no issues with that, and certainly on bigger screens, it becomes even less of an issue since that window-box will be bigger than on a smaller screen regardless.

WB's "ultimate" collection looks lovely from an aesthetic point of view, but the mastering of the discs and the quality control of them, for an LOTR fan like myself, still isn't in any shape way or form the ultimate experience. But what can ya do? <shrugs>

I hope so. Warner is the worst studio around (at least Universal will license their titles out so people aren't stuck with their garbage transfers). That box set was the most egregious marketing scam I've ever seen. Literally. No respect for the consumer or the filmmaking team. Warner can shove it.

You hope a company lost money so they cut corners somewhere else, possibly leading to less releases or people losing their jobs?. Yeah, that sounds good.

Ha! No. Warner actually release their movies at least, especially now with the Warner Archive. Also while a lot of their catalog titles don't look amazing they don't usually look processed and ruined either. That recent LotR bookshelf set was indeed ridiculous, but no one had to buy it. The actual trilogy set is great and has been super cheap many times.

Paramount and Universal are far worse studios for home video, and Lionsgate for BD.

Yes. Not the job loss part though. Don't do the straw man thing. That company sucks and everyone knows it.

By and large, Warner's transfers beat those two, no doubt. But like I said, given their penchant for allowing Shout and Criterion to fix their messes my vitriol for Warner is about their crappy business practices that've started in the past few years.

Got my copy today. Little did I know that it would be the Canadian release. XD

I'm not mad, just surprised. I was disappointed at first, but it quickly became interesting knowing that I own an import. Plus, the disc art for the films (not the Special Features) look better than the US release. Other than that and the packaging, the differences are very small. I still have the Extended Edition for each film. That's what matters.

No. I know it's the Canadian set, because of the rating. In the end, it doesn't matter. Besides a few previews before the menu, they're the same blu rays, with the same quality. Thankfully, they're not bootlegs. It's kinda cool having an import. The packaging is different: there is only the slipcase, and the three separate blu ray cases (colored the traditional blue, instead of black). All fifteen discs are accounted for. There's also a different company attached to this: Alliance Films.

I accidentally got my friend a Canadian release of this too a few years ago. I honestly don't know how, I guess it was from a third party seller?

My friend's the kinda guy that doesn't care about that kinda stuff though lol (as opposed to me, who would hate it). As long as the movie plays, it doesn't matter.

If you have Amazon Prime, you can get the extended edition boxset for $25.99. Incredible deal for this! Only at that price for a couple more hours though.

Yea that would suck for me as well. I had a U.K. Jurassic park for the longest time and I couldn't stand it. Haha

I would still wait for the UHD Blu-ray set, but that's just me.

Finally getting around to watching these (along with Hobbit 3D Extended for the first time), and it's remarkable how much better FOTR EE looks than the TC disc, shame the same quality isn't available in the stronger cut. I wonder if this will be remedied with the inevitable UHD release (not super confident with how WB approached the cuts issue on Blade Runner).
