I just don't get the this-vs-that mentality. To me, the book is one of King's best overall, the 1990 tv show which was basically rated PG had a few really fun parts from the book and a great performance by Curry and the kids, and I couldn't imagine that anyone would hope that this new film is less than amazing.

Salem's Lot is my absolute favorite Stephen King novel. This was my introduction to Stephen King, and it shines through and through, even if King had not yet mastered his "campfire storytelling" prose dialect that makes his more recent books flow so well. Everything comes together in Salem's Lot, and, unlike many of King's more famous books, it has the perfect ending with just the right closure. IT is a close second favorite, and it probably would be my absolute favorite if King had not dropped the ball somewhat at the end. To his credit, though, I'm hard-pressed to imagine how I would have ended the story any differently. After this, I would recommend King's first two short story anthologies, The Night Shift and Skeleton Crew. These two collections are solid gold all over, with nary a misstep in them. I also love Pet Sematary, which is more like a true old-style Edgar Allan Poe /W. W. Jacobs horror story as opposed to a "Stephen King horror story." Other favorites: The Shining, The Dead Zone, Full Dark, No Stars (anthology), The Green Mile, Revival. I love the first four Dark Tower books, but the last three go into weird self-indulgent territory. (They're all wildly fun, though!) The Stand is awesome, of course, but my preferences are strong for the first half of the book, with the disease epidemic and its immediate aftermath. Used to be a huge Stephen King fan in my teens and early 20s but It was the first novel of his I didn't make it through. At that point his books became more bloated and could have done with a good editor and the themes also became repetitive. As I started to read them in the 70s as they came out, it's mostly the early ones I enjoyed the most:
1. The Shining 2. Salem's Lot 3. Carrie 4. Misery 5. Cujo 6. The Stand 7. Christine 8. The Dead Zone 9. The Green Mile 10. Firestarter |

I believe you are exaggerating. I found Cujo pretty tense at the time. The movie was actually pretty decent and apart from the ending and some omissions more faithful than most. The only problem is that in the novel Cujo becomes something monstrous, almost demonic the way he is perceived by his victims, while on the screen you still always just see a slobbering St. Bernard, one of the friendliest looking of dogs.
