Like with any company, it can vary due to various aspects and I have been happy with the releases I own to date. You can find reviews for most of their releases at http://www.dvd-basen.dk (a review aggregation site). I think Pro-B has reviewed a good chunk too on this site (and they will be linked from dvd-basen).

Just a head-up that Basen's search is awful. Don't include apostrophes and don't include suffixes in your search (the, an, a) and you should be fine.

I've been very pleased with all of the Third Window release I've purchased so far. Excellent PQ.

This is good to know and a purchase is now assured.
Has anyone seen an image of the Bluray, I've been to their website although nothing is posted.
The Cardboard slipcase (limited to 1000 units only) which is mentioned, is this simply a cardboard other sleeve over a standard Bluray case or is it something else?

Two films also on my extensive list to acquire.

It might be a while. I contacted the US Distributor that was to release the film and they told me that they are having difficulties with the Japanese rights holders and that an actual release of Maborosi is a long, long way from happening. At this point, I doubt we will see a release for a while.

The Japanese should take a leaf out of the Korean's book and simply add English subs to their releases. This would improve their bottom line as I'm sure it's paying dividends for their Korean counterparts.

I hope Third Window don't mess with the Colour scheme as some other releases have done in the past such as kitano's Zatoichi.

Some of the Korean english subs are shockers though.

True, but even then Kore-eda's early works don't have blu ray releases in Japan. And as sad as it is, I think that when the Japanese distributors put their movies out on disc they only care about the Japanese market and how much they can make there as it is a premium collectors market.

there's barely a japanese market, and far from being primarily a collector's market, it's been a rental market - affected by the structure differences that cause small print runs and high prices. as far as i know. no sale-or-return element, insular practices and so on.

you won't see english subs on their discs with any regularity. if anything, i'd hope that many countries will see some shift to including subs if streaming becomes successful and oddly global. why english above any other non-japanese language anyway?

Hana Bi is still available on Amazon UK, I would thought the total 3000 would be gone by now.

There is no limited on the total number made, just the first 1000 copies have a cardboard slipcase for each of the Kitano releases.

Though even some of them are still available as not even 1000 have sold yet.

Is this documentary new or same as DVD?

Also any idea when we'll find out dates for Kid's Return and Scene at the Sea?

My UK Pathe DVD of Kikujiro doesn't have any documentary on it so good news for me! I'd assumed it was new but I see from IMDb it was made in 1999.

Documentary is from 1999, but only ever available on the dutch release of the film, so quite hard to track down otherwise.

Scene at the sea and kids return will be late summer

Was away for the weekend and just got back to read the news about A Scene at the Sea and Kids Return! Excellent, and let's hope some more follow these!

Also happy to see a price-drop on Kikujiro - £10.99 sounds fair to me!
