Hypothetical improvements are fun to contemplate, but until, and if, they become reality no improvements have been realized by any streaming customer. You do understand that many people can not even stream 4K video with its anemic 16 Mbps bitrate; how many more will be unable to stream at 40 Mbps? 40 Mbps IS more bitrate; 2 and a half times more than what 4K streams are now. A lot more data consumption there and that has to be paid for by the consumer. Will the already mostly satisfied streaming customer be willing to pay for all this extra bandwidth and data usage? To watch 8K cat videos on Youtube? As there is extremely little 8K content beyond a few Youtube clips, and even fewer people with 8K TVs, I doubt that we will see many 8K offerings from the streaming services anytime soon. Even when, and if, they ever do, it will be as compressed and bit starved as they can get away with. Streaming always looks to do the bare minimum. Hard to get excited about watching compression artifacts on a 85", or larger, 8K TV. I have no problems finding, and buying, movies and TV shows that I want to own on disc. I actually buy them whereas you do not, so, once again, you are speaking about something of which you know next to nothing. The vast, vast majority of what I want to own, I can, and do, own on disc. I own 13 seasons of TV shows on 4K disc, 441 seasons of TV on blu-ray, and 650 seasons of TV on DVD. I don't see any problem here. I seem to have acquired a few movies on these formats, too, with 20 more coming this month so far. Announcements for new releases of both recent and older titles are posted on the left hand side of this website's home page. If you even glanced over these you would know just how wrong you are. And yes, with a disc you control the content. The only real way the content owners can lock you out is by stopping production of DVD and Blu-ray players. Or passing down some firmware update that stops playback. But at the end of the day you can still take a computer and find ways around that. With streaming it's only there as long as the content owner allows it to be. Last edited by stonesfan129; 06-08-2019 at 01:21 AM. |

Warner Brothers have said they are planning another streaming service called WarnerMedia in future which could replace it's current streaming service of theirs called DC Universe which is for the comic book fans of Batman & Superman etc. The WSJ have published price leaks on WarnerMedia's subscription pricing. They could offer it with a bundle which includes HBO GO, Cinemax & WB's various TV shows and movies for between $16 & 17 per month.
https://batman-news.com/2019/06/07/w...ice-leaks-out/ Now if you were a big streamer in the U.S. & Canada; would you go for something like this if you had the money to sign up to it or spend the money on other things which may become a priority. Would you think that paying $16 & $17 a month would be too much if it was offered by itself. Also what your opinions on WB launching DC Universe separately to WarnerMedia. Do you think those two services should have been integrated into one service to make it cheaper for new customers? There is word going around that DC Universe may not stick around in the future. It's future is said to be 'reassessed' for the studio's strategy on streaming & making new content. There was some bad news recently coming out from authorities in North Carolina. Executives at WB/DC who were making & producing Swamp Thing in the city were not given enough money back for a tax break to fund the entire show's budget. They were meant to get $40 million from them but they only received about $13 million instead. This was due to an error in administration procedures to allow them gain access to the funding. To make things much worse; the show was actually running over budget by about $26 million which prompted their executives to make the decision to cancel the entire show after just one episode was aired on DC Universe. They had the intention to make 13 episodes. They then reduced it to 10 episodes because of lack of funds. https://deadline.com/2019/06/swamp-t...ge-1/#comments |

By the time I subscribe to every streaming service, it's just easier and probably cheaper to buy what I want on DVD or Blu-ray.

I sometimes feel like we’re being punked when it comes to alchav and a few other frequent posters Wendell. Being hardwired isn’t a necessity. I’ve been wireless for years and never had an issue that didn’t originate from the original source. Hell, I was watching a DVD of the BBC show Vicious the other night and noticed that audio was out of sync

IIRC, my first was a Linksys WRT54GL and worked fine for several years. I have many devices that are Wi-Fi only, several devices that are wired only and several that can do both. I like my home automation and voice control of that automation, thermostats, locks, etc. so for me Wi-Fi is a must. I have read quite a few articles on wired vs. Wi-Fi but to imply that wired would cure lip-sync issues sent me to ![]() |

Nah, I’ve got a few things land on my plate. Sooooo, right now I’m using the cable company’s router for the moment. They’re a bit more proprietary when it comes to giving access compared to Xfinity and I’ve not hooked up our old computer to see if I could access it on my end. I do appreciate the suggestion though

I do understand what you are saying here. SVOD services are not really my thing. I bought a Blu-ray set online yesterday for £5. I will keep depending on using physical media to watch my favorites until into my old age. The value of subscribing to streaming services in own country is quite limited because the selection from them is awful. I also know I won't get everything available that is over from the services in the U.S.

Oh my. I have read an article from techdirt that says U.S. telecom companies are now considering to freeze on doing projects that will provide major upgraded access to residential fibre broadband services. The reason for this move is because of the costs of rolling it out to any of their intending customers in less affluent urban rural areas in the U.S. is too expensive.
https://www.techdirt.com/articles/20...-noticed.shtml The only companies that can do these projects now is the cable companies across the U.S. There is talk of 5G coming in to try & take some of the market share off the telecoms or the cable companies. But, in order to have 5G running through your locality, you need to have Fibre to provide an essential backup connection to your local telephone mast to allow it to work in the first place. So again people would need to be connected to fibre in order to get any chance of a 5G connection to your home & to your device. It also says that AT&T (who are setting up WarnerMedia & currently own DC Universe) & Verizon are heading into using wireless broadband connections for their future in the video streaming space. It does say that wireless doesn't fix the problem in the U.S. It is correct there in that it won't fix the problem because if you have too many people trying to connect to servers through your ISP's wireless connection; the chances are there will be a lot of contention around on your networks which reduces the quality connection on your internet devices at home. That will reduce the mbps you have in your broadband speeds from your broadband package. Have a good read of this article if your free to do it. It gives good information on some companies that have gone bankrupt because of huge debt & not making enough profit. |

![]() Streaming isa bag of hurt. Unless you are perfectly happy watching your movies on a 5 inch mobile device via 5G. Don’t forget we have broadband data caps to hit more areas in the future. Last edited by Steedeel; 06-09-2019 at 12:01 PM. |

![]() not sure of your point it is like saying minimum wage keeps going up. Technically true but comnplretely usless since it will alwasys be minimum wage. I would rather, like I do, make a lot more then minimum wage and have a healthier increase. physical media is much better in quality now and it too keeps on getting better. Quote:

Even though wireless can have more issues then wired. the simple reality is your wireless network will most likely have higher throughput then your internet connection as well as much higher then the str4eaming provider making it unlikely to be the cause of issues. Also if it is the root of issues then it will be happening with anything and everything. |
