WNUF Halloween Special
I discovered this little gem last year and I absolutely love it. It's a love letter to anyone that grew up watching late night TV in the 80s. It doesn't go for big laughs and it doesn't go for gore but it does go for a complete authenticity. This will always be in my annual Halloween viewing list. It is only on DVD but it doesn't matter because the quality is supposed to be like VHS.

It's not a masterpiece, but I enjoyed it for what it is. It is just a good time. I have no regrets about watching it. Yes, she was creepy but this is not a scary movie. Though, I don't know what they are trying to say with the ending.

[Show spoiler] - It's damn near perfect!
- It's great!
- Enjoyable
- Crappy
- Avoid at all costs!

* - First viewing

Sinister (2012) - I find this to be one of the best horror movies of the decade. It’s a film that successfully uses suspense and tension over gore, which seems to be a lost art. The performances are well done, there are some cool twists, Mr. Boogie is frightening, and the use of super 8 film is fantastic. What truly makes this film so atmospherically haunting is the tremendous score/sound design, which gives me goose bumps every time I watch it.

Sinister 2* (2015) - While this was not as good as the first installment, it also doesn’t deserve the abundance of hate it’s received. The film is very flawed, most notably in making the comedic side character from the last film the lead, as well as making the ghost children less scary and more relatable. However, the stuff that did well really worked for me, like the twist between the two brothers and the super 8 movies. I had hoped that this one was going to make Buguul more of a threat, but all in all, I found it to be an enjoyable flick.

The Haunted World of El Superbeasto (2009) - This is such a zany and over the top movie, but I always have a good time watching it. Of course, it’s much more enjoyable when you can pick up on the abundance of horror references. It does drag a bit during the middle, but the end makes up for it. Granted, I think this movie could’ve been a lot funnier and stronger, but for what it is, I like it.

Mountain of the Cannibal God* (1979) - I pretty much got what I expected with this one: tits and gore, and that was enough for me. The acting may be subpar, but it delivered on the exploitative goods and was quite disturbing, although not as horrific as Cannibal Holocaust.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre II (1986) - While this sequel is a far cry from its groundbreaking predecessor, it manages to deliver enough campy entertainment to make it an enjoyable viewing. The first half of the film suffers from pacing issues, but the over-the-top mania keeps interest held until the conclusion. Tom Savini’s effects are also very effective.

The Bat* (1959) - This Vincent Price flick was fun, although it’s certainly not one of his best. It certainly has that 50’s horror charm, which over powered the slow pace and campy aesthetics. I also enjoyed how it played with the audience about who the killer is, rather then making it the obvious choices.

American Psycho (2000) - Although it feels a bit dated, and a little slow at times, Christian Bale’s performance is mesmerizing. It’s definitely worth a watch just to see the scenes when he goes off the deep end. Not a great movie, but one that is always fun to see.

A Clockwork Orange (1971) - There’s really nothing I can say about this film that hasn’t been said before. Incredible visuals, disturbing characters, and a zany plot. As most of you know, it’s a Kubrick classic!

Horror of Dracula (1958) - Christopher Lee is top notch as the Count, and Peter Cushing makes for an excellent Van Helsing. I do love the vibe of the old Hammer horror films, although I don’t think it matches the atmosphere of the Lugosi version. My only complaint is that it moves very slow, but when it picks up, it’s great stuff.

House of 1000 Corpses (2003) - This is a movie that I enjoy more and more with every viewing. Although I think the sequel outshines it in terms of quality, there is such uniqueness about this film that makes it a treat to watch. It’s so zany and twisted that it’s almost hypnotic. Performances are great, set design is incredible, and the mood that’s set with the weird transitions and intercuts are just plain awesome! I also wish Zombie would do the music for more of his films, because I think the score is very underrated. As far as criticism, the only one I have is that the protagonists are basically indistinguishable. However, it’s never been a huge problem for me because it’s clear the stars of the film are the members of the Firefly family.

A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) - How can I possibly say anything new about this film? It’s iconic and a classic. I did notice that it has some pacing and performance issues, but the concept is so excellent that it’s easy to overlook. The surrealness of the film is definitely one of its best elements, not to mention one of the greatest villains ever, Freddy Krueger. Having lost Wes so recently, it definitely struck how influential he was and will continue to be in the horror genre.

Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III (1990) - I hadn’t seen this is numerous years, and didn’t have much of a memory of it. Surprisingly, I enjoyed it just as much, perhaps even a little more, than TCM2. Granted, this film suffers from one big problem, it’s generic. There’s nothing that is done incredibly well, besides maybe Viggo’s performance, but there is also nothing truly abysmal. I do like how menacing they made Leatherface, and Ken Foree automatically makes me enjoy the film. No, it’s not a great movie, but I would go as far as to call it decently enjoyable.

This is the End (2014) - I think this film is very well done. Not only is it absolutely hilarious, particularly with its meta concept, but there are moments that can genuinely creep you out. While it’s not as clever as Shaun of the Dead, it has become one of my favorite horror comedies. I’d even say it’s one of the best Seth Rogan movies.

Tales From the Crypt (1972) - I was so happy to revisit this film on blu-ray for the first time. Despite its age, the film holds up incredibly well. There is an awesome, old school, creepy vibe that lends itself to the moralistic campfire tales of the film. I’m too seduced by the charm of the film to really find any negatives. All the segments are enjoyable and it looks great in HD.

Child’s Play (1982) - Having watched it this time on a big screen (my universities private screening room), I was able to appreciate this on a more technical level. As crazy as the premise is, they pulled it off exceptionally well. Everyone brings their A game, and the horror still holds up well. It’s a very fun and cool movie.

28 Days Later (2002) - One of the absolute best modern zombie films! Incredibly creepy and scary, the concept and execution are both spot on. This is the type of film that would keep me awake at night because it just seems like it can totally happen. While the video quality leaves a lot to be desired, it does add to the grittiness and realism of the film.

Friday the 13th (2009) - This movie actually seems more flawed with each time I see it. I certainly don’t loathe like many others do, but it does have a blandness about it. I will applaud its kick ass opening, beautiful women, and fearsome portrayal of Jason, but the story itself and the protagonists are forgettable. Luckily, the unique kills and cool set design make it fun enough to revisit.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation (1994) - When someone asks me what the worst movie I’ve ever seen is, I always refer to this. I had only seen it one other time, so I was hoping that my memory of it was worse than it actually was. Sadly, I was wrong. The absolute only thing that is decent about the film is Matthew McConaughey. I have nothing else positive to say about the film. It’s truly just an abysmal experience.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003) - This is one of those rare remakes that is almost just as good as the original. I love the casting, music, set design, story, and basically everything about it. I think it’s also the scariest Leatherface has ever been, along with R. Lee Ermy, who just steals the show. Even the protagonists are very likeable, with Jessica Biel being a standout. I may rank the original a little higher than this one, but this is the one I revisit the most.

Dawn of the Dead (2003) - Where TCM remake comes close to being as good as the original, I dare say this one surpasses it’s original film. This is probably my favorite zombie movie ever. It is truly unnerving and terrifying. There is an intense feeling of brutality and hopelessness that you feel the terror that the survivors suffer. This is how you make not only a great horror movie, but a great remake as well.

Halloween (2007) - I know this is a controversial film to Halloween fans, but I for one love it. Yes, it has its flaws, but it’s one of my favorite remakes because of it’s differences from the original. I love the brutality and disturbing quality of the film, which helps to make Michael Myers as terrifying as he was in the original. It may not be for everyone, but it always hits my sweet spot.

Psycho (1960) - I had the chance to see this in the theater, and despite having seen it numerous times and having the upmost respect for it, seeing it on the big screen made me appreciate it even more. There’s nothing my I can add about this classic. It’s truly the grandfather of the modern horror film, as well as Hitchcock’s crowning achievement.

They Live* (1988) - This was pretty much what I was hoping it’d be, a fun, light-hearted action horror film. Despite the loose story and questionable acting, it was an enjoyable film for just turning your brain off. I thought the ending was a little anticlimactic, but Roddy Piper and Keith David are just fun to watch.

Burnt Offerings* (1976) - Despite it being a little slow, I think the film had great atmosphere, along with some fun performances. I thought the ending was also really effective. It wasn’t the greatest haunted house film, but definitely a solid entry.

White Zombie (1932) - Although I can acknowledge that it’s kind of dull, there’s a certain eclectic charm that always wins me over. Bela Lugosi is always phenomenal, and I guess I’m just a sucker for old school horror.

The Vault of Horror (1973) - This one is almost just as good as it’s predecessor. All of the entries are solid, particularly the voodoo one at the end. The blu-ray transfer was a treat to watch, especially since they added in the uncut vampire segment ending.

The Green Inferno* (2015) - This one definitely delivered on the gore and gross out. The acting and story certainly needed work, but I definitely have to applaud the special effects. However, the ending really threw me for a loop. I would have liked the film a lot more had the ending been more logical. I think this ranks in the lower half of Roth’s films, but it was certainly nice to have a modern age cannibal film. It wasn’t fantastic, but I’ll definitely revisit it.

Curse of Chucky* (2013) - I’ve been wanting to see this for a while, and although it wasn’t quite as good as I was hoping, I had a very fun time watching it. I loved how it tied all the previous entries in while taking Chucky back to his roots.

Freddy Vs. Jason (2003) - This one is always fun to revisit. I think it nails the perfect balance of horror and action, while also doing both icons extremely well. I think it’s one of the top films in both series.

Halloween III: Season of the Witch (1982) - My appreciation for this film grows with each viewing. It’s a fun standalone film that is heavy on camp, but has a lot of charm.

Dracula (1992) - This is my personal favorite version of Dracula. Coppola’s aesthetics really make this a visual treat, which makes up for the few story and pacing issues. The performances, with the sole exception of Keanu Reeves, are all top notch and deliver on every front.

Halloween II (1981) - While I don’t find myself as enamored with this as many others do, I think it’s still an enjoyable watch. It definitely suffers from pacing issues, and can become flat out boring in some spots. That said, it still has some fun moments that make it worth revisiting.

Re-Animator (1985) - This is a great "turn off your brain" film that's pretty funny. It's very cheesy/campy, but that's also part of its appeal.

Night of the Living Dead (1968) - It’s so hard for me to choose between this and Dawn of the Dead as the best zombie film of all time. This film has such tremendously eerie atmosphere that it’s no wonder how significant its impact was on the genre. Despite it being almost 50 years old, it still manages to give me the willies.

Return of the Living Dead (1985) - Very campy, but very fun! It’s so over the top and cheesy that you can’t help but go along. Nonetheless, it also manages to be creepy when you realize how bleak and terrifying their situation is.

Halloween IV: The Return of Michael Myers (1988) - Definitely one of the better sequels in the original series. While it never manages to be truly creepy, everyone works well in the film and it succeeds in being an entertaining flick with a great Halloween vibe.

Dracula (1931) - While this film has one of the most iconic horror villains of all time, there’s really not much more to it. Aside from Lugosi and the actor playing Renfield, it’s actually a rather dull film. The perfect version of Dracula would be if you could take the Spanish version and replace that Dracula with Lugosi. Still, it’s worth a watch simply for Lugosi’s performance and its historical significance. Not to mention, it looked beautiful seeing it on a theater screen.

Sorry folks, the Cubbies made the playoffs and my Scary Movie watching had to take a back seat to the Northsiders:

5-Walking Dead S6E1- no spoilers- I love it when they go 90minutes, I wish more shows would do this more often. 4.5/5 1/2

6-Evil Dead (remake)- Starts out slow, and at first you hate all of the characters, but about mid way through, it turns into a really excellent movie. 4/5

1-Sinister: We’ve all seen it, if you have not, drop everything, run to Best Buy, and buy this movie. Great acting, great story, great film. 5/5

2-Ouija: IMDB takes a big dump on this movie, but I found it entertaining and spooky. All and all it is a pretty solid teenage horror flick. 3.25/5

3-Patrick (remake): This one was on Showtime so we decided to give it a look. Decent, leaning towards weak. You may like it if you are a fan of Tywin Lannister, he plays the doctor. 2/5

4-Fear the Walking Dead E5 and E6: I enjoyed this series, my wife not so much. Charecters cannot hope to compete with Rick and company of the Walking Dead, but who can? 3.5/5

10/26

*The Phantom Creeps(1939)
Chapter 8: Trapped in Flames
Chapter 9: Speeding Doom

The Wolf Man(1941) There's something tragic about that man." Mandatory watch for October!

*The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari(1920) The birth of horror! This film has such a unique and twisted style.

The Mummy's Ghost(1944) Lon Chaney is back in the wraps as the mummy Kharis and his high priest, played by John Carradine, learn of Kharis' lost love, Princess Ananka is reincarnated as a beautiful college girl. Its a B picture all though out and its even got an ending that's a downer, which is unusual. Ramsay Ames who plays the reincarnated Ananka is abosolutely smokin' hot. At one point she's got a streak of white hairs giving her this "psychobilly' look.

The Mummy's Curse(1944) Continuity is thrown out the window once more as the story now takes place 25 years after the last so its now 1995 and still, nothing's changed since the 40's!(I can live with that ) Somehow Kharis and his love, Princess Anaka, end up in the Louisiana Bayou after their demise in Massachusetts. It the weakest of the series, but for the most part I enjoy watching it.

What a joyously weird, funny, sexy, ****ed up little movie. Totally not what I was expecting and that can sometimes hurt my enjoyment of a film but for some reason it helped with this one. I kept thinking "What on earth am I watching?" but never had the desire to turn it off. Rarely do I watch a movie that can just drag me along for the ride. George Miller, John Williams, Jack Nicholson, Cher, Susan Sarandon and Michelle Pfieffer all at the peak of their powers yet I never hear anyone talk about or mention this film. Strange.

10/26

[Show spoiler]-This is still my favorite horror/thriller in the last few years. Just a whole lot of fun.

1/2

[Show spoiler]-I liked this one since I saw it in theaters. This was a good match for Burton and Depp's aesthetic. Not everyone is a Broadway singer, but all of the actors are adequate. I especially enjoy Timothy Spall's performance as the slimy Beadle Bamford. The only aspect I did not enjoy was the actor cast as Anthony.

10/27

1/2
[Show spoiler]
-Great performance from Terry O'Quinn. I always thought that this one would have been a little better without the opening with his old family, and if they had done away with the guy trying to chase him down. Especially since he was killed with little effort once her found O'Quinn's character. I thought that would leave a little more uncertainty about his motives.

*First Time Watching

[Show spoiler]-This one is sort of a Dr. Phibes meets Shakespeare without being quite so over the top. Great performance by Vincent Price.

[Show spoiler]9/22 - Night of the Creeps -
[Show spoiler]Love this one. Not really scary, but campy and funny. Plus Tom Atkins in one of my favorite roles.

9/24 - Strip Nude for Your Killer -
[Show spoiler]-Good Atmosphere, keeps the tension up for about 45 mins, then starts to drag a bit. A LOT of random nudity. Overall, I liked it, about middle of the road giallo. stars Edwige Fenech, so that makes if alright in my book.

9/25 - Lost After Dark (3 1/2) - first time viewing.
[Show spoiler]Pretty good "period" slasher. Set in the 80's. Pretty good character development before the slashing starts. Lots of moody shots of the old house. Enjoyable example of a well done slasher.

9/26 - Hardware - First time watching.
[Show spoiler]Loved the music. Like Dylan McDermott and the dystopian setting adds to the atmosphere.

9/26 - The Battery - First time watching.
[Show spoiler]Very very good. A zombie film without that many zombie, but more of 2 man road trip movie meets a zombie movie. Unique and compelling.

9/27 - Eaten Alive (2 1/2) - First time watching.
[Show spoiler]Very very odd film. The whole thing is sort of a sleazy slice of life. I can say I have never seen anything really like it. There is very little lead up, and almost no explanation of why the killer is killing. And if you want to understand anything that the killer says, turn on the subtitles. Hooper fans should check it out. Oh, I almost forgot, I think this is Robert Englund's feature film debut. Anyone that has seen that Kill Bill movies will see the homage to this film by Tarantino.

9/28

Maniac (remake) -
[Show spoiler]- Really liked this one. Shot almost totally in 1st person POV. Gory, with very psychologically stunted main character. Elijah Wood does a great job.

Night of the Scarecrow (1995) -
[Show spoiler]- Not bad at all. Good slasher flick with an early appearance by John Hawkes. The lead actress in this is good, not sure why she didn't do more.

9/29 - Hatchet -

[Show spoiler]-had seen it before, but it has been a while. I really enjoyed it, maybe more than my rating suggests. As serious horror film, I stand by my 3 of 5, but for my enjoyment of it as almost a parody of 80's horror with a few good scares and just as many laughs, I give it 4 of 5.
It also features "Freddy" from Mad Man as a sleazy adult film "producer."

9/30 - Hatchet II / Hatchet III - / 1/2

[Show spoiler]I liked both of these to conclude the trilogy although the ending of III was bt of a letdown. Caroline Williams of Texas Chainsaw Massacre II plays a supporting role, so it was good to see her back. The Second installment was definitely stronger.

While I like Danielle Harris, I much much preferred the original actress that was in the first film, Tamara Feldman. She is much taller and more physical which is necessary since she is being chased by a killer. Also being from the south, most accents attempted on film almost without fail are either not accurate or fall into the Kevin Spacey from a Time to Kill old delta accent that just doesn't exist anymore in anyone under 70 years old. I say that to say that I thought Tamara Feldman did a very good accent. All in all, I thought she fit the part better.

Though, once you accept the actress change, everyone does a good job, especially Tony Todd.

10/1-

[Show spoiler] - Very good early 80's slasher with a dark sense of humor. Though the Canadian accents do get to be a bit much.

10/2

[Show spoiler]- 1st time watching. I enjoyed it enough, but I was expecting more. Not very scary. I still have a hard time understanding why Craig Scheffer never made it bigger. He is a good enough actor, and there he had some good roles. Back on topic, I am glad to finally see this and that I was not one of the fans waiting for this for 20+ years.

- 1st time watching.
[Show spoiler]I really liked this one. Funny and macabre. Gore generally doesn't bother me, but the scene with the soup at the first of the movie was gross.

10/3

1/2
[Show spoiler]- I have seen this before, but it was only bits and pieces.
I am still working my way through the Price-Corman-Poe films. I have both of the Price sets from Shout plus some of the Arrow standalone releases. Pretty much if Price is in it, I will watch it, and The Masque of the Red Death has been one of my favorite Poe stories. Very good for this sort of film.

*First Time Viewing

1/2

[Show spoiler]Loved this one. Price was perfect, and a wax museum with its lifelike figures is creepy to begin with. The atmosphere and mood were great.

I just tried to start House of 1000 Corpses/Devil's Reject's double feature, but my Lionsgate House of 1000 Corpses disc has gone bad. I had checked it a few months ago to be sure, along with most of the other older LG titles. It worked then, but it does not now. It will try to load the menu, but will freeze and I even had half of the screen go purple with digital pixilation. Oh well, I just picked up the 88 Films release of Castle Freak, so I think I will watch that instead.

10/3 (cont.)

*First Time Viewing

1/2
[Show spoiler]
-A great atmosphere of the Italian castle with a secret, plus Jefferey Combs and Barbara Crampton. Nothing not to like here. I may rate it higher on a second viewing.

*First Time Viewing

1/2

[Show spoiler]-The theme or score really made the movie for me. While the actual zombies looked a bit fake, some of the gore was still very visceral. I liked it a lot. It just takes a little while to get where it is going.

10/4

Creep (2015)

*First Time Viewing

[Show spoiler]Wow. This one was very good. I did not know what to expect with Mark Duplass in the role of the "Creep," but he was quite unsettling.

*First Time Viewing

1/2

[Show spoiler]-This was more of a mystery than an out and out horror movie. But I always like Albert Finney.

*First Time Viewing

1/2

[Show spoiler]- I will have to rewatch. There is just too much to pick up on during one viewing
.

10/5

1/2
[Show spoiler]
*First Time Viewing

I really wish the dub was better. Some of it is really awful. Also, there is not reason for the guy's face to be deformed, nor is any reason given that I recall.. Just because. I was prepared to give it a lower rating until the "twist" even though I predicted it. Some good kills even though some of it looks very fake. Not bad, but not my favorite Franco either.

10/5

1/2

[Show spoiler]I don't think I have seen this one since I was 15 or so after it came out. Gotta love some throwback 90's horror. I guess part of the Scream horror comedy phase. Not scary, but some good effects and actually pretty funny. Plus a cameo from Fred Willard. I think I picked this up during the Image BOGO maybe back in February, and would have definitely taken longer to watch it. But this thread is a good motivator.

10/6

*First Time Viewing

1/2

[Show spoiler]- I saw a poster above watched this, so I thought I would check it out as well. I really enjoyed this one. I've always liked Treat Williams, and Piscopo was pretty funny as well. The twist on the zombie premise was interesting. A great cameo by
[Show spoiler]Vincent Price
. For a Horror Comedy, this really was funny.

10/7

-On Netflix
*First Time Viewing

[Show spoiler]
Good Creature feature. I just finished up the Strain so more Kevin Durand is appreciated. Maybe he can start getting some lead work. Also glad to see Bianca Kajlich and Nick Damici getting more roles as well.

10/8

*First Time Viewing

[Show spoiler]This was great. I don't want to give anything away, but this is a very unique movie, though it bears some similarity to Curtis Harrington's Night Tide. Hopefully a breakout for both of the lead actors. They both do great work here.

10/9

*First Time Viewing (Netflix)

1/2
[Show spoiler]
- This was an odd one. It is like the Phantom of the Paradise meets Wet Hot American Summer without as much comedy. Almost like a straight comedy about a theater camp with a slasher element thrown in. Has a short appearance by Minnie Driver and a co-starring role for Meat Loaf Aday. I enoyed it, but much more a musical than a horror film. But oddly very realistic gore when called for.

aka Turistas

*First Time Viewing

[Show spoiler]- Pretty much Hostel in Brazil with less humor. I like the leads in this one some of whom of gone on the bigger careers, and the effects are pretty good, but there is just not a lot to this one. An okay time killer.

*First TIme Viewing

[Show spoiler]- This one surprised me in how much I liked it. Lance Henriksen can make any movie at least palatable. And this one had a southern gothic type of atmosphere complete with steam rolling through the swamps. Couple that with a tale of revenge, and you have a pretty good movie.

10/10

1/2
[Show spoiler]
-Everyone has pretty much seen this one, though up until now, this was the only one of the Friday the 13th's I had seen except the remake. An early appearance by Kevin Bacon, some good kills.

*First Time Viewing
[Show spoiler]- Good Continuation to the Series.
[Show spoiler]We have Jason as the killer for the first time.

*First Time Viewing

[Show spoiler]- I liked that there was a little more character development in this one though the kills are the essential part of the series. I enjoyed the grocery store owner in the first part of the movie as some random comic relief as well.

*First Time Viewing

1/2

[Show spoiler]- Another good entry in the series. You have Crispin Glover in a particulary Glovereqsue performance (read: weird), and you have the lead from The Last American Virgin as well. I always thought Corey Feldman was a good child actor that was not nearly as good once he became a teenager and I guess became more self aware. Regardless, I could have done without all of the awkwardness with Crispin Glover trying to get girls to dance, etc, but once the killing started, it was good.

*First Time Viewing

[Show spoiler]
-Odd as a Friday the 13th film due to many many things not making sense with respect to the previous films. But as entertainment, I thought it worked well, though I thought the ending was stupid.

10/11

*First Time Viewing

[Show spoiler]-I really liked this one. Thank goodness they ignored the ending to New Beginning and made, my favorite installment so far.

*First Time Viewing

1/2
[Show spoiler]
-Too much Carrie-lite, to little Jason. Though the end showdown was cool.

*First Time Viewing

[Show spoiler]- With a different title, this could have been better, but from what I read budget constraints kept this from being the all out assault on Manhattan that it could have been. An okay effort.

*First Time Viewing

1/2

[Show spoiler]- The only good things about this is the bounty hunter, and the actor that played the Don King like promoter in Rocky 5. And I supposed the Jason explosion at the beginning. Other than that, it was bad. No Jason, and all of this new stuff about Jason passing from body to body, etc. If this is what we have to endure to get Freddy vs Jason, then so be it. I do love that movie.

10/12

*First Time Viewing

1/2
[Show spoiler]
-I know it is a dumb plot to put Jason in space, and the set looks like a SyFy movie of the week, but I couldn't help but enjoy it. lots of good kills.

[Show spoiler]
-I love this movie. An early appearance by Jason Ritter, lots of wry humor, and an awesome fight at the end. What's not to like?

10/13

1/2

[Show spoiler]As a generic horror movie, it may rank higher, but as a Friday the 13th movie, it is not great. It had been a while since I had seen it, but now everything with Jason's lair and much of the movie feels just like The Texas Chainsaw remake (the Jessica Biel one). That makes sense because it is the same director. Not to say the movie is not polished, but it lacks much of the fun of other entries. On a side note, I don't think I can watch The Last Ship now and take the character of the actor in this movie seriously anymore. Since the movie is not that great, I recommend the Killer Cut for more of Julianna Guill's extracurriculars.

10/14

[Show spoiler]-I had forgotten about this one. I usually don't buy dvd's unless I can get them for super cheap and they are not on blu-ray, but I picked this one up used for about $2.75. Well worrh the investment. Very Funny. May be Broken Lizard's best work. Bill Paxton really could have gotten a Golden Globe Nom for his work in this anyway. He is hilarious.

10/15

*First Time Watch

1/2

[Show spoiler]-Great atmosphere and mood. Almost too short though. I wanted to keep watching.

[Show spoiler]-This one really got a short shrift in it's truncated theatrical form. The extended cut is much much better, with Del Toro doing some great work.

10/16

*First Time Watching

[Show spoiler]-I liked the concept of the murder party. I also appreciated the satire of art and how that community can be pretensions at times, but in the middle of the movie I really thought it dragged and the acting was notably bad from the Alexander character especially. That may have been intentional. Things picked up at the end though, and made the watch worth the time.
All in all, not as good as I expected, but the bloody ending paid it all off.

*First Time Watching

[Show spoiler]-If this was a standalone movie, it may have been a bit better, but compared to the original, it suffers. Rules established in the first are thrown out the window, the story is not compelling, and the acting is bad even from Andrew Robinson. Not a lot to like here.

10/17

1/2

[Show spoiler]-Sort of a Chainsaw Massacre ripoff or at least an homage. The best part of it is Sid Haig's Captain Spalding. Solid film. A good setup for the sequel.

[Show spoiler]-William Forsythe really chews the scenery in this one. I love it! This one is reminiscent of Texas Chainsaw 2 without the over the top Dennis Hopper comedy. (Don't get me wrong, I love some TCM2). A very different feel than House of 1000 Corpses even though you have some of the same characters. There is an exceptionally funny sequence with Ken Foree buying some live chickens from a roadside stand. His line delivery cracks me up every time

10/18

[Show spoiler]-I have seen it before, but I finally got around to opening my copy that I have had I for I guess 5 years or so. Really interesting take on the vampire story. Lance Henriksen is good as always. But I always wonder why Bill Paxton doesn't get more credit. I know he had his day as a quasi A-lister and did Big Love on HBO, but after seeing this, Fraiilty, and Club Dread recently, his versatility and the quality of his work is amazing. (his turn in Boxing Helena not withstanding). Back to the movie, I would recommend it to any fans of the vampire genre.

[Show spoiler]-Classic. Great start to a solid horror franchise. Does anyone else find that Johnny Depp sounds remarkably different in this than he does now. His accent is much different. That could have been intentional on his part. It just struck me as I was watching. I haven't seen this on in a while.

10/21

*First Time Viewing

[Show spoiler]-This was fairly informative but seemed overly short and kind of slapped together.

10/22

*First Time Viewing

[Show spoiler]-Not bad. Lee is very good as always. But the budget, as well as the Franco touches (score, never ending zooms that don't stop at an acceptable framing, etc) don't fit the subject matter in my opinion. All in all, enjoyable for Dracula fans, but the Horror of Dracula is much better.

*First Time Viewing

[Show spoiler]
-I have heard a lot of good things about this one. It is great when Christopher Lee is allowed a solid role outside of his portrayals of Dracula. Although the stupidity of the Rex character got a bit old, the rest was very compelling.

10/23

[Show spoiler]-I love this one. Michael Moriarty is so arrogant and smarmy in this, but it is perfect for the character.

*First Time Viewing

[Show spoiler]-Some of the effects are dated, but the cruelty and violence from Price's character make this character in his estimate, the most villainous he has ever portrayed. I would agree. One of my favorites of the Vincent Price films that I have seen.

10/24

1/2
[Show spoiler]
-Not a lot more than can be said. A disturbing classic of the genre.

10/24

[Show spoiler]
-I enjoy this one. Sort of a slapstick re imagining of the first film. Caroline Williams is good, and Dennis Hopper is just apeshit insane in this one. I know some do not care for this one, but it may be my favorite to watch since the first one is just so draining.

*First Time Viewing

[Show spoiler]-This sort of breaks with the series in that you don't have any of the actor coming back, and it spends way too much time with Leatherface out hunting in the woods rather than back at the home. But we do get Ken Foree and Viggo Mortensen, so I can't complain too much.

*First Time Viewing

[Show spoiler]-This was a brisk film, with a very satisfying ending. I thought the actor playing Elizabeth's brother was a bit stiff, but otherwise, this was great. While Barbara Steele is always a beauty, it seems like some effect was put into downplaying Luana Anders' looks in the film proper. I say that because my disc has an extra scene shot to pad time for tv, and she looks much more attractive in that even though she is ostensibly in a mental asylum. Not sure if it is the lighting or what. Just something I noted when going through some of the extras.

10/25

*First Time Viewing

1/2
[Show spoiler]
-This one was bad. I knew what I was getting into, but a transvestite Leatherface was a bit much. McConaughey does show flashes of the restrained menace that we would see later in Killer Joe and Frailty, and Renee Zellweger is fairly good, but if not for the two stars there would be no reason to watch. The end about the whole deal being some government experiment was awful.

1/2

[Show spoiler]-Really good anthology.

1/2

[Show spoiler]-Solid Vincent Price.

10/27/15:

-Creature * (1985): [ZERO SKULLS]

Horrendously cheapjack Alien ripoff is good for a few stray laughs, but hard to believe this came out over a half-decade after Ridley Scott's classic, as it looks about as chintzy as a 60's episode of Star Trek. The godawful, full-frame DVD that Netflix sent me was no help, although its 1986-era VHS quality was sort of nostalgic, as this is the way I watched a lot of the formative classics of my youth...on some crummy VHS or cable showing (or, worse, an edited-for-TV network broadcast) with the widescreen image butchered to fit a 500-lb, 20 '' tube TV and with so much streaky interference it was almost impossible to make anything out. You know a movie had a buck ninety-eight production budget when, aside from an extended Klaus Kinski cameo, the most recognizable name in the cast is 80's Joe Dante regular Wendy Schaal.

-The Quiet Ones (2014):

An Oxford professor (Jared Harris) in the mid-70's wants to collect scientific evidence that so-called ghosts and spirits are mere physical manifestations conjured up by the human mind, so he takes a test subject in the form of an unwanted orphan (the sad-eyed Olivia Cooke from Me, Earl & The Dying Girl), a pair of student assistants (Eric Richards, Rory Fleck-Byrne) and an impartial observer (Sam Claflin) to document the proceedings, and takes the four to a secluded house where their experiments will not disrupt the lives of the other students and faculty. Soon, they discover that whatever is possessing the girl is quite real, and may have a sinister connection to horrible Satanic rituals from the past. A chilling, atmospheric supernatural thriller (from the recently-resurrected Hammer studios), The Quiet Ones has some fine performances (especially from the remarkable Cooke) and plenty of bump-in-the-night frights, but falls just short of true greatness, despite the goosebumps it delivers as it unspools. Still, a worthy effort, and one of the few recent films to make effectively sparing use of the beyond-tired "found footage" trope.

10/27 - *Cursed (2005) -

(I watched the Unrated version, by the way.)

This had potential to be really good and I was really into it for a while, but it fell apart in the last 30 minutes. Once
[Show spoiler]Christina Ricci's boyfriend is revealed to be the original werewolf
it becomes one big, boring cliche.

The film took 2 and a half years to finish and some of it shows in the editing. I didn't notice anything at the beginning of the film but in that last half hour we see Christina Ricci circa 2003, then a cut to skinnier Black Snake Moan Christina Ricci, then back again. It happens a bunch of times in the third act and it's extremely distracting.

But overall I don't dislike it. I debated on whether to give it two and a half skulls or three, and I decided to be generous.

10/27 - *Sadako 3D (2012) -

(I did NOT watch this in 3D, by the way.)

Teeny bopper garbage filled to the brim with bad CGI. I don't know about anyone else, but I feel like moving this franchise over to viral videos from a VHS tape just ruins the magic, it becomes lame. The 3D gags were really corny, and mostly CG. We only have a few more days left for our marathons, I regret wasting time on this film.

The spider Sadakos at the end were pretty cool though, I'll say that much.

Yeah, it really is that bad...

Spend the $10 on something worthwhile.

Theme for 1st - 6th: Intro to October (Anything)

October 1st:
*The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) =
[Show spoiler]
Defiantly see why it's consider a masterpiece of horror, the violence is minimal and yet made me wince just because of how it's presented. You feel the same emotions that Sally feels because her actress really gives it her all with her fear, her desire to live, it's amazing. The family is probably the best hillbilly villains in horror cinema. If you haven't seen this classic yet, like I before, do yourself a favor and see it, it's fantastic.

October 2nd:
Tusk =
[Show spoiler]
Kevin Smith's second horror film (I'll be doing the first soon), and...(sigh) I'm really sad to give this just a 3, The acting is fantastic (besides one, I'll get to that in a little bit), the writing is amazing, there are some amazing monologues in this film that are truly enthralling and I love (or love to hate) most of the characters (there's that one I flat out don't like that I'll mention soon), it was also kind of brilliant, a parody of films like The Human Centipede, but done in such a tongue-in-cheek way that's still very creepy and disturbing, with the genius technique of implied violence (most of the surgery isn't shown), but it's also funny. Plus it has an ending the wouldn't be too out of place in something like Tales from the Crypt, although it's bit more dramatic then Crypt, which I liked, and it's with another great monologue from a surprise performance from Genesis Rodriguez. So, what brought this down to a 3...the second half. So there's a "surprise" cameo during around the end of act 2, and it's Johnny Depp (it's not really a surprise if you're familiar with Depp) and to put it simply of how out of place this character is, well, it's like putting 20 minutes of The Pink Panther into The Human Centipede, he is that out of place, and there's another thing that makes this character hard to sit through, this is a BAD Depp performance, hands down. Of course that's not the only problem with this second half, when Depp comes in, the whole movie goes way too over the top at that point and it pisses me off because there is an amazing Horror-Comedy-Drama in all these rough points. But because of those rough points I can only give it a 3, but I find myself still liking it because of how much good it has. I recommend a rental for the curious and a buy for the brave. I think Smith has shown to be a good horror director, he just needs to tighten his scripts a bit better for his future horror films. Sorry for this long review, but I needed to really get my thoughts on this film out.

October 3rd:
Daybreakers = 1/2
[Show spoiler]
Some really nasty gore, really interesting universe, smart satire, great acting, gorgeous cinematography, and some clever dark humor; but I feel that it's too short, but that's probably my love of this world talking. This isn't the best vampire movie out there but it's still one of the most creatively original vamp films in the genre.

October 4th:
*The Crazies (2010) =
[Show spoiler]
Haven't seen the original, so I can't compare. However, this film is intense (any scene involving military puts me on the edge of my seat), creepy, greatly acted, beautifully filmed, and brilliantly satirical. Even if you're not a zombie fan, it changes up the formula enough to be refreshing, I highly recommend it.

October 5th:
Orphan =
[Show spoiler]
Great surprise twist, fantastic acting with Isabelle Fuhrman being the obvious show stealer as Esther (adorable in one instance, flat out terrifying in the next, she's great), great cinematography, enough intensity to put you on the edge of your seat, some pretty brutal kills, and some very good psychological intrigue. However there are some problems, unnecessary jump scares (though very few), the evil child story obviously nothing new, and the son is an annoying little s#!t (almost as bad as the bully girl). However, with that said, this is still a very good movie. I hope the director stops with the Liam Neeson action films (Run All Night, Non-Stop) and goes back to horror because this was very well made.

October 6th:
Jacob's Ladder =
[Show spoiler]
Amazing psychological horror, intriguing themes about government conspiracies, PTSD, afterlife, grief and more. Some great disturbing imagery (the hospital scene is stuff of legend), the acting is amazing, and the fact that this was one of the inspirations for the Silent Hill series and has been referenced in many other horror products is a testament to it's staying power, it's defiantly one of my favorites.

Theme for 7th - 18th: Family Appropriate Horror (To celebrate the release of Goosebumps)

October 7th:
The Addams Family (1991) =
[Show spoiler]
Great and creative production values, perfectly cast (though Llyod is a bit too over the top and that's saying something), and fantastic dark humor makes this film a good time for children and adults.

October 8th:
Dark Shadows (2012) = 1/2
[Show spoiler]
This is probably the most harsh of family horror (in terms of content), quite a few deaths, there's a surprising amount of blood shed (at least for a 2012 PG-13), and it has quite a bit of sexual content, but the humor makes the violence not as harsh and the fact the blood looks cartoonish helps too. However, the film is pretty funny, there are some creepy bits (Barnabas's attack on the construction workers), you can't deny that Burton's production values are fantastic, and the cast is having the time of their lives with this film (especially the lovely Eva Green as the villain). But the stuff with a werewolf is dropped on us with little explanation, the drama isn't played too well, and the homages to other films of this nature, like Beetlejuice, Casper, etc., first feel like cool homages, until they keep happening so much that you can tell that Burton is trying too hard to be like those films. Still this is a fun film, I would recommend parents be cautious of this one though, while this would be something I could handle when I was 4, other kids may not be ready for this until they're much older.

October 9th:
Casper (1991) =
[Show spoiler]
If you have a young one who is feeling brave, but you want to start them soft with spooky movies, this is a fantastic place to start. There are some very light frights, great production design, pretty funny comedy, surprisingly well done character development, and it gets generally touching. Sure, it's not nightmare inducing, but it's a great family film for adults and kids, provide some foul language won't upset you. I will say one thing though, the lip movements on the ghosts, besides Casper, is pretty bad.

October 10th:
Paranorman = 1/2
[Show spoiler]
Laika is proving to be a force in animation, even Boxtrolls, though not as good as Coraline or this, was good. And let me just say this right now, this is a new family classic, the writing is mature, but understandable for kids, it's scary, but there's enough jokes to keep it from being to intense, most of the characters are well written and developed, the animation is breathtaking, the loving homages to horror are great, and it has a great message that even some adults need to be taught. What keeps this from being a 5 star film is Alvin, he wasn't really funny, he didn't really help in the plot, and he was just f%#king annoying, I love Christopher Mintz-Plasse, but not in this. With that said, everything else in the film I love, and if you haven't seen it yet, go see it now, it's fantastic. I love Coraline, but it was this film that made me excited for any future projects from Laika.

October 11th:
Ghostbuster (1984) = :
[Show spoiler]
A classic, hilarious, enough spooks to give you some memorable frights, great characters, top notch effects, memorable creature designs, and great action. If you don't mind the language, then this is an amazing Supernatural Comedy for the whole family.

October 12th:
Ghostbusters 2 = 1/2
[Show spoiler]
A bit too similar to the first, but I like the villain way better in this one, still enough memorable scary moments (that severed head scene was pretty graphic and startling), the humor was still great, characters too, the climax is great, and the creature designs are still top notch. If the language doesn't bother you and you think your kid can handle the darker moments (this is defiantly darker then the first), then this another great film for the family.

October 13th:
Corpse Bride =
[Show spoiler]
Creative, touching, some good songs (with "Remains of the Day" stealing the film), some creepy parts, some good humor, decent character development, okay villain, and of course beautifully animated. Also, this is the first full length film from Laika, and it's defiantly a great start for the company.

October 14th:
Beetlejuice =
[Show spoiler]
A perfect supernatural comedy, some spooky moments to give you memorable imagery, hilariously written, very creative, and on point performances. Fair warning to parents, the language is pretty harsh (one F-bomb is dropped), and some the imagery is pretty gross and frightening, but if your kid is mature enough, this is perfect dark comedy for the whole family.

October 15th:
Coraline = 1/2
[Show spoiler]
This film goes right next to Poltergeist (1982) and Return to Oz as the most terrifying family film that's been made. Amazing story, creative and creepy imagery, mature and intense without going too violent, and greatly acted. If you think your kids can handle this, it really does depend on the child, then watch this and be terrified together. I'm not the biggest fan of the changes from the book, but that's the sacrifice that has to happen when bringing page to screen.

October 16th:
Gremlins =

[Show spoiler]Great characters, great effects, hilarious comedy, great scares, and probably one of the best horrific Christmas set movies made. Now, while I was fine with this film at a young age, your children may not be, so be cautioned. Also realize that the violence and horror in this film is one of the causes that created the PG-13 rating, so please know that going in.

October 17th:
Gremlins 2: The New Batch =

[Show spoiler]Sillier and less violent then the first one, this sequel gives us a new, creative place for havoc to take place, the film if f#%king hilarious (from inside horror gags to making fun of parents complaints of the first film), the set pieces are fun and some even scary (spider Gremlin is a very intense moment), and the different types of Gremlins created throughout the film are very creative.

October 18th:
*Goosebumps = 1/2

[Show spoiler]The grand finale of this theme, was it worth the celebration? Yes, very much so. Jack Black is enjoyable as R.L. Stine but is fantastic as Slappy, the characters are very likable with very good development, the acting is pretty good, the humor gets pretty funny, there's enough creepiness here to get kids spooked, the effects are very good (practical when possible, CGI when needed), the twists are pretty obvious but very well played (and are honestly set up better then some twists from the book series), the love letter to fans is nostalgic and wonderful (especially during the credits). But I will say that it could of used a bit more monsters, however with the movie clocking at 1 hour and 43 minutes, it would of probably been too much and too exhausting, plus they could use them for the sequel, so it's not a totally bad thing, but I can see fans being disappointed. The beginning is pretty slow, I'm glad that they took so much time for character development, especially since it's rare for a family film to develop characters so thoroughly, but impatient viewers could be turned off quick by the slow beginning. All in all, Goosebumps was better than I hope it would be, and is definitely a must see, it's a mix of films like Jumanji and Hocus Pocus that's fun for all ages, weather your Goosebumps fans or not.

Theme for 19th-24th: Horror Musicals:

October 19th:
The Rocky Horror Picture Show =

The fact that a lot of people don't realize this is a parody astounds me (a lot of people I know think it's fun because it's such a crappy film). This is the most genius parody I've seen, it's making fun of the 50's Sci-Fi/Horror but it is also a big love letter to the same type of films (the fact it's made fun of like those films shows the genius of this). Everyone is on their A-game, they all work so great together and have some of the best comedic timing in film. The soundtrack is f#&king awesome ("There's a Light" and "Hot Patootie" being my favorites). If you haven't seen this film, do yourself a favor, check it out right now, it's a must see.

October 20th:
Little Shop of Horrors: The Director's Cut =

Another love letter to the cheesy 50's Sci-Fi/Horror films, like Rocky Horror, but there's something it does different from Rocky Horror. Rocky Horror was just an amazing, loving parody; Little Shop uses the silliness of 50's B-movies (of which this is a remake of) to tell a very dark morality tale (at least in this cut). Fantastic performances (Steve Martin and Levi Stubbs eat their villainous roles up, the other actors are all great in their roles too), the soundtrack kicks a$$ (I like too many songs to really have a favorite), the puppetry is perfection (especially this cut's ending), and the story is darkly hilarious and tragic. What makes this version perfection is the closer to Broadway ending, this brings the Faustian complexity of the story back, Seymour made a deal with the devil and must have to face the consequences for those actions, this is what makes this such an original movie, the Theatrical Cut is my childhood, but this Director's Cut is my preferred version as it brings the real depth of the story back. If there is one thing I don't like about this cut, it's that the destruction in the end goes on a bit too long, but it's still great none the less.

October 21st:
Repo: The Genetic Opera = 1/2

I love this world, the soundtrack is fantastic ("Legal Assassin" and "Night Surgeon" being two of my favorites), the acting is on point (for the most part), the creativity is amazing, and the gore is nasty. If there is a few thing I don't like, it's Luigi, Bill Moseley is a good actor and guy, but he just isn't good in this (his singing is so poor), and I do see the style being super annoying for some people (I love it). Still a great film, and I hope it keeps getting recognized.

October 22nd:
Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street =

The dark humor is on point, the style is beautiful, the music is fantastic (Thanks Sondheim. I really don't have a favorite), the actors all fit there roles incredibly, the kills are over the top nastiness, and the tragedy of this story is one that can't be topped. This was Burton's last great film.

October 23rd:
The Devil's Carnival =

Criminally short, but the soundtrack is great ("Beautiful Stranger" and "Grief" being my favorites), the acting is pretty good, for such a cheaply made film, it looks amazing, the creativity is so on point that you'll be begging for more. With a creative way to tell the stories, it's a fantastic film.
