![]() ![]() 10/27: Oculus (2013) - ![]() ![]() ![]() For me, less is more when it comes to the scares in this film. I liked seeing the gradual changes happening to the characters over time. Unfortunately, a lot of that subtlety is lost in the final act, where it goes for more conventional scares. I thought the the kid actors were among the strengths of the film. In fact, I found the psychological trauma they had to go through to be the most disturbing thing about the movie. Also, I swear I'm not making this up, but my first attempt at trying to upload the poster resulted in the image below. I never had this happen to me before ![]() [Show spoiler]

October 26
Rob Zombie binge House of 1000 corpses ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I know most prefer The Devil's rejects but this is my favourite of the trilogy though it is close. It is fever dreamish and energetic and throws a lot of different characters and horrific situations on the screen. It also has a great Halloween night feel to many of its aspects. Not perfect but I've liked it more each viewing. The Devil's rejects ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Expands upon the first one and we get a sort of road movie with killers in this one. More Captain Spaulding too and Ken Foree is always a nice addition to anything. Almost as good as the first one and I liked this more than HO1000C when I initially viewed them but it is now swapped if just a bit. 3 From Hell ![]() ![]() ![]() Like for most, this is definitely my least favourite by far. I don't think it is as bad as its reputation but of course it is a shame [Show spoiler] Still tries to keep up and even though it falls it doesn't fall flat on its face.Halloween (2007) ![]() ![]() ![]() I like this one. Carpenter's Halloween is untouchable and I never needed any more backstory for Michael, in fact most of the time I think it is best to not lift that curtain, ever. Here though it is build from ground up so we actually get a completely different take and that makes it easier to not compare it to the far superior original. Though not perfect by any means, what we get here mostly works for me. One thing though, [Show spoiler] Halloween II (2009) ![]() ![]() Though I again appreciate the effort to do things his own way, I feel Zombie had half a script here worth shooting. It is overblown and the [Show spoiler] It does it's thing, not everyone will like the result but I definitely enjoy parts of it and it for sure tries to go in to the post trauma effect hard but I just don't think a lot if lands or is warranted the amount of screen time there is for that. And as I said, [Show spoiler] It is not all bad, it is just a very unsatisfying film. |

![]() ![]() 28. Scream 3 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Scream 3 does a lot of things right. The butchering from the studio weakened it some, and while it may not be as great as the first two entries, it still manages to be pretty close. I love how this one wraps up the Maureen Prescott storyline from the first two films and provides new story details about the first film that that makes sense. This trilogy ended on a solid note, and had there not been any sequels after this one, I would have been fine with that. Although, I am happy that we got more films after this and that the Scream franchise is still ongoing. 31 Days of Halloween 2024: [Show spoiler]

Better than anything in the Monarch series. These guys deserved that Oscar. Excellent effects, great storyline. It didn't disappoint. It was very much influenced by the original Star Wars where the effects didn't take over the story. Also noticed Jaws, Jurassic Park, and Lost World influences. Awesome movie. Can't wait to see it on a bigger screen. ![]() ![]() |

10/24:
![]() Deadtime Stories (1986) *First time viewing* ![]() ![]() The idea of a horror anthology telling twisted versions of classic fairy tails is an interesting one but this was pretty bad across the board with the stories starting from dull to cartoonishly absurd (The Goldilocks segment got some legit laughs from me.) It did have some inspired spots that had potential to be something if it were better executed plus it had some solid special effects and fun soundtrack. I think this is more noteworthy for being early work from future Academy Award winning actress Melissa Leo. |

![]() [Show spoiler] First-time viewings are indicated with an ^ [Show spoiler] 10/27/24: -We Summon The Darkness ^ (2020): ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() A trio of sexy besties, Alexis, Beverly and Val (played by Alexandra Daddario, Amy Forsyth and Maddie Hanson), head off to an Indiana rock concert circa the summer of 1988, when they Meet Cute with a trio of rock enthusiasts, Mark, Ivan and Kovacs (Keean Johnson, Austin Swift and Logan Miller) when they toss a chocolate milkshake onto their windshield on the road (they reciprocate by tossing a lit string of firecrackers into their van). After the show, the girls invite the guys back to Alexis' rather luxe House for afterparty beers and possibly more, but after getting roofied, the guys wake up taped to chairs in the skivvies, the girls revealing themselves as devout churchfolk who want to murder the three and pass off the killings as the work of a Satanic cult, thus increasing the power of Alexis' preacher daddy (Johnny Knoxville). But things spiral wildly out of control as the girls' plans keep getting foiled at every juncture, leading to chaotically bloody consequences. A mixture of horror and humor, We Summon The Darkness (which was barely released in 2020) offers up great, sinister chemistry between its three easy-on-the-eyes leading ladies as they bicker and plot how to put down the more-resourceful-than-they-look guys, and the movie generates as many chuckles as chills as it rolls along. -The Spell (1977): ![]() ![]() ![]() An overweight young girl named Rita Matchett (Susan Myers) is relentlessly ostracized by her high school peers, much to the dismay of her parents (Lee Grant & James Olsen) and younger sister (Helen Hunt, in one of her earliest acting credits), but she secretly utilizes dark magic to strike out at her tormentors and make them pay. Quickie made-for-TV knockoff of Carrie (which screenwriter Brian Taggert claims he wrote even before the publication of King's novel, yet this aring barely three months after De Palma's film is awfully sus...there's even a scene with Matchett awkwardly playing volleyball!) is reasonably well-acted, yet has no discernable style or suspense to it, and even at a scant 73 minutes seemed padded to reach an obvious conclusion. |

Catching up, we didn't watch anything on Tuesday or Thursday
10/21 ![]() Another October staple for us, an unscrupulous book dealer is tasked with authenticating a book believed to have been written by Lucifer. I find this movie engaging and I think Frank Langella was suitably imposing and sinister as Boris Balkan. It's a slow burn, but it works. This is one of the first additions to my blu ray collection. 10/23 ![]() I was very late to the party with this one. I had seen the batbleep insane sequel many times on cable while in high school but I hadn't seen this one until a few years ago. While watching it the first time, I wasn't digging it. However, when this movie kicks into gear, it's an absolute blast. This movie won me over by the end and is one of the primary reasons I try to finish any movie I start. A traumatized television reporter is sent to a retreat where the other patients are not what they seem. I love the opening to the movie, however things settle down with it's protagonist figuring out something is amiss and putting the pieces together. I enjoyed these scenes much more on repeat viewings knowing that they are building up to a third act that is well worth the wait. Highly recommended werewolf movie. 10/25 ![]() My wife requested late 70s/early 80s horror centered around college students (her favorite). Pledges are tasked with spending a night in Garth Manor, where a family massacre happened with one lone survivor rumored to be roaming the grounds. Likeable characters, fun 80's gore, excellent gothic setting, quick pace...excellent slasher from the subgenre's golden age. 10/26 The Boogeyman (2023) Another 1st time watch and one that I really enjoyed. Grieving family begins to sense unwanted presence that has invaded their home after a man commits suicide in the closet of the recently deceased mother. This is another movie that focuses on grief and how it can tear families apart. Obviously, it's no Hereditary, but it does craft an engaging watch and some nifty set pieces (I particularly dig the usage of the PS5 lighting up the room with the titular entity running around in the background). Characters help propel movies with these themes and this movie has a very sympathetic family at it's center. This is definitely one that will find it's way into my collection. 10/27 ![]() This movie put Mike Flanagan on my radar, because it has no business being as good as it is when you compare it to the first movie. He took premise established by a mediocre (I'm being generous here) movie and crafted an exceptional chiller about a family whose youngest daughter begins to exhibit disturbing changes after a ouija board comes into their life. I love the late 60's/early 70's feel to the movie (down to the old-school Universal logo at the beginning) and the scares in this movie are top-tier when compared to other movies of this ilk. The acting is great, atmosphere is top notch, and the directing shows Flanagan's talent on full display. Love this movie (you can skip the first Ouija). |

Visiting Hours five stars out of 5 jeez this film man
I'm surprised not enough people have seen this horror film, which is a shame it's incredibly underseen, and had been on my watch list for a few years. However, I kept putting it off, but now I finally watched it and I love it. Also this is probably one of the most disturbing hospital horror flicks I've ever seen no I haven't seen Exorcist 3, or Shock but I will get to them at some point. Michael Ironside is absolutely terrifying in this film, and well yeah he's an absolute monster in this film with a sad number of flashbacks involved, but still incredibly evil. He becomes really obsessed with Lee Grant's character so he can kill her. He's just so unnerving in this film, and his performance just works so well. This film really deserves so much better, and I think it needs more attention, and in general it needs to be seen by more horror fans. Last edited by Watershipdownisgood; 10-28-2024 at 03:19 AM. |

10/27 Today is the first day of my week long vacation of doing absolutely nothing but binging on horror films while eating lots of Halloween candy. Today is a date with Chucky.

Hellhole 5/10 ![]() Most of my score is from all the nudity in the film. This ended up being more of a Women in Prison type movie. The Black Room 5/10 ![]() This was a decent slasheresque horror film. The Twin ![]() 6/10 slow burn but what a pay off. Blood Quantum ![]() 3/10 Didn't care much for this one. Probably one of the worst zombie movies I've seen. One Missed Call ![]() 5/10 I've never seen the original Japanese movies but the American one was alright. Kind of like Final Destination with a phone Prey for the Devil ![]() 5/10 A weaker exorcism movie. The Curse of the Screaming Dead ![]() 3/10 Pretty cheesy low budget zombie movie. Curse of the Blue Lights ![]() 3/10 Didn't care for this one that much. Kind of drug on. |
