Just updated my PS3 to 3.4 for the 'deep color' update. I must say, this just unveiled a new quality to my set. I haven't had anything to A/B except for the XMB and the pictures on it, but wow.... I advise anyone using a PS3 to have the 3.4 update and keep the display option for deep color to automatic. Really impressed with this and I had to share!

Default 101FD from BB

So I'm looking at a 101fd that was a display unit at BB. Can get it for $2149 includes ISF calibration. Manufactured in October 2008. I was told it wasn't put up out for display until Feb. 2010. I'm gonna have them check the hrs then make my decision. If I do get it I will probably take the free calibration then have my HT guy go through everything again. What is to many hours for a display model? Thoughts and comments are appreciated.

Oh and I'm upgrading from a Pioneer 5080 which will now go into the bedroom.

Thanks,
Eric

That being conservative in my calculation the display should have 6000 hours or more and to me thats a lot of money to be asking for it imo . Even though your not even near halfway of the lifespan on the Kuro those hours were played consecutively for atleast for 12 hours daily. Regardless thats to much money for a used kuro .

Sorry, but it is in your head - this has always been supported by the PS3...the update actually allows for you to turn it off or set it to automatic. If your display supported it the PS3 would default to on. Plus it is mostly marketing hype as blu-ray does not even support deep color.

While having the Deep color on, there was a difference for the better. I did only A/B'd after the update, which is why I was so excited about it (I was able to shut it off apparently ). Strange that the XMB actually looked better than when I was running the 3.14 firmware though.... Chalk it up to placebo, but that's how it looked to me!

What use is Deep Color then? It has to be more than just the PS3 XMB...

Well I found out today the TV has 2083 hours. Any thoughts? Still a good deal at $2149?

Thanks,
Eric

I would just make sure there is no burn in. I picked up a 500m from a local store here and there was clearly burn in from the dvd they played over and over. They had set that one up about 5 to 6 months earlier. As for the amount of hours, you gotta think around 12 hours a day 7 days a week 30 days a month come out to about 5 3/4 to 6 months of constant use. So it really depends on what you think of that number and if there is burn in or not?

Yeah I hear you. I checked it out today with no picture and it looked black as black can be with no burn in. I think I'm gonna go with it. Great TV for a great price.

The Pioneer has deeper blacks and an overall better picture quality. I was looking at the specs for the Runco and it appears that the plasma display uses 3:2 pulldown with 60HZ refresh rate. Pioneer plasmas use both 60HZ and 72HZ refresh rate depending on the program content. When the Pioneer receives a 1080p/24 signal it will display the image on the screen at 72HZ without 3:2 pulldown judder. Also the Pioneer will do a reverse 3:2 pulldown for film based SD and HD material from cable, satellite and DVD and up convert the image to 1080P at 72HZ when the film mode is set to advanced. Non film based and non 24fps video sources are refreshed at 60HZ on the Pioneer plasmas.

I agree. I didn't even know what a Runcos was. I had to look it up. After reading the specs and seeing that the technology was state of the art in 2005, it really makes me wonder if it would even stand up to the Kuro. I say if your happy with Kuro stay with it.
