Enemy of the State
PQ - 3.5 AQ - 4.5 Film - 4.0 I realize my scores are the same as the review on here, but that is because I think he nailed it after watching this on Blu-Ray yesterday. You can tell you're watching the movie in HD, but the master isn't in as good of shape as it should be. There were noticeable print scratches and such, but it doesn't ruin the movie at all. The AQ was obviously better and was a good quality track. As for the movie itself, it has always been one of my favorites of its kind. Definitely a solid 4/5. One of Will Smith's best serious roles and a pretty loaded cast overall. |

Watched Reality Bites last night. If anyone has never seen it, it's about 4 friends in there mid 20s straight out of college, trying to figure out what life after college is gonna be. The movie had subpar reviews, but I think it was better than what the critics were saying. You get to see early work from 5 amazing actors/actresses, starting with Winona Ryder. Who is the main character of the movie as she figures her life out, finding a job, and juggling a love triangle with Ethan Hawke and Ben Stiller. I have to say this is one of Ryder's best early work, that made her one of the best actresses in Hollywood. The movie also co-stars Steve Zahn and Jeanine Garaffalo. You also see a small glimpse of Dave Pirner (Lead singer of Soul Asylum), in the movie. Who ended dating Ryder off-screen for awhile.
This movie came out in the 90s. Anyone who grew up in the 90s whether in your teens or 20s can appreciate what this movie revolutionized the movies we see these days. This is a must see classic movie, with good actors/actresses. I give it an 8 out of 10. ![]() |

Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans
What a mess. Plot holes the size of Alaska. Poor, POOR storytelling. Why is New Orleans in the title? Generic camera work. Cage was OK but there were some other awful performances. Many BS events that were too fake to ignore. Jarring continuity errors. Overall it was crappy. The more I think about it, the more ridiculous it is. PQ was damn good. 4.5/5 AQ was very good 4/5 |

Watched John Woo's "The Killer" for the first time ever.
Entertainment: 4/5. Lots of great (albiet crazy, cheesy, and over-the-top) shoot-outs. Lots of blood. Pacing is pretty decent. Lots of stylish slow-motion shots and decent camera angles to keep the picture unique. Story: 4/5. Pretty decent characters with decent amount of emotional depth. Story is not bad. I think it's interesting how the movie shows so much about characters getting caught in the cross fire in the firefights between the Triads and the police; it's pretty sobering to see the effects of collateral damage. It's also pretty interesting how the main character spends so much time trying to shield Jenny from harm. Film: 3.5/5. Given the age of the movie, it reminds me quite a bit of older action movies from the 80s; "The Killer" is kinda on par with "Commando," "Midnight Run," "Lethal Weapon," etc. They all have a distinctive 80s flavor that suggests that they're older, cheesier, lesser quality perhaps...there's something about them that seems outdated. Regardless, it does have decent value; acting and writing are good, photography is pretty good, and the sets, props, costumes, etc are not bad. Lighting is pretty interesting in some parts. Music is okay. As a film, "The Killer" is pretty good, but I think John Woo's other films (namely "Hard Boiled," "Face/Off," and recently "Red Cliff") are better. Emotional/intellectual: 2/5. For the reasons mentioned above; seeing innocent people getting hurt in police shootouts don't seem to happen often in action movies, so I found it significant that this one shows it. There is a little bit of thought to the movie, but for the most part, it's pure action. Total: 4/5. Pretty good. The Blu-Ray is kinda bad, but not as bad as I first thought. The video does have some significant noise and color/contrast problems that prevent it from being reference quality, but it is still decently sharp. Audio on the Chinese track sounded pretty good. The English dubbing was pretty bad though (mono, and at one part the sound suddenly cuts out for a split-second). |
