Collectable T-Shirt ... It takes a braver man than me to wear a T-Shirt of two little girls saying "Come play with us forever and ever." on the front. They really needed "The Shining" on the front as well!

Yeah that t-shirt wasn't really thought out well was it! That scene still gives me the creeps even though Ive seen it so many times.

So any clues, hints, rumours, or whispers of a new transfer?

I know it's too much to hope for, but my dream is that they scan The Shining in 8K and release both cuts of the movie in 4K UHD at 1.33, 1.66, and 1.85 aspect ratios. Oh, and they fix the color inconsistencies that are on the blu-ray.

Speaking of color, what color gamut was Kubrick working in? Would it be appropriate to release the movie in the P3 gamut? What about HDR? How is the director's intentions preserved when it comes to these things?

Hope something along these lines is coming for all of Kubrick's 'big' films. I don't own any as I feel like they are surefire to hit 4K UHD within the next couple years.

I'd rather have a seemless branching release that included the 146, 144 and 119 minute versions. I don't see the point in having open-matte transfers of films intended for widescreen in this day and age. The old 1.33:1 transfer of The Shining doesn't show all horizontal information so IT'S NOT THE FULL NEGATIVE, as claimed by many. It's just another movie formatted for television.

Honestly, the day that two-disc Kubrick DVD set came out and I discovered the movies included had anamorphic widescreen, I was quite overjoyed with that discovery since I didn't really like how most of the older DVDs had his films in full frame.

I can easily live without seeing the full frame versions for the rest of my life to be honest.

I'm pretty content with the two disc DVD of this until a better Blu is released.

Honestly, I can see why some people would prefer the 1.33 version. It's likely what they first saw on VHS or DVD, and some of the compositions arguably work better in that ratio. If they put both versions in the same package, it would be perfect. If Transformers warrants it, why not Kubrick?

That's actually not a bad idea at all: just put both versions on there, I think most folks would be happy with that.

Yeah, that would definitely make a lot of people happy indeed.

Best of both worlds for everyone.

I also would argue for the inclusion of both US and International versions in this release as well (in both full frame and widescreen framing, of course).

Exactly. We don't have open matte versions of every other film, and especially every Super 35 film, so there's zero need to have one for The Shining. the argument that "that's how many people first saw it" is also pointless, because growing up in the 70s and 80s, EVERY film I saw VHS was 1.33 (either open matte or cropped/pan & scan) and I don't expect them all to be released that way just because that's MY memory of it.

The Shining never played theatrically at 1.33 (or 1.37), so there should not be a blu-ray version of it.

Next thing they will be asking is for movies to come with commercial breaks.
