Kubrick - I also like The Killing a lot, but then heist movies are fun to me.

My film education is incomplete. I can't comment on your additions. Marienbad has been ordered though.
I've always appreciated your comments and feedback--I look forward to climbing aboard the crazy Lynch train and will take your recommendation. I thought the Green Mile was pretty good and actually better than the book (not too hard when it's Stephen King). The Mist I thought was decent but no great directing feat.

As for Kubrick, I haven't seen the Killing and def want to. Marienbad is unlike anything else and I know myself and surfdude love it. I really want to see Hiroshima by Resnais as well.

My film education has barely begun. Sure I've seen a lot of films and many of the most acclaimed films, but I have sooooooooo many I haven't seen. I'm still in 1st grade

I have little interest in seeing Black Swan either and I like both of the lead actresses in it. Oh well. I guess it's too good for us.

if there's one thing that gets me from older films, it's the acting. i find it generally terrible, so Rear Window i will more than likely pass on.
I'm in the vast minority in not being a big fan of Vertigo. It really didn't do it for me, although in full disclosure I'm not a Stewart fan. I love Psycho, Dial M for Murder (might be my favorite), Rope (thanks squid), and Rear Window. I think Strangers on a Train is pretty good, but Granger annoys me. I still have to see Notorious and Lady Vanishes, among others. Not a fan of the Birds.

I feel sorry for you. I've seen a lot of movies and I'm still so excited to see more and more films. Just go on theyshootpictures and look through their list. If you can't find something on there that peaks your interest, then you're a lost cause

i'm actually more in a tv kick around now actually. catching up on Prison Break season 2, 24 season 2, rewatching LOST (for about the millionth time), and starting the first season of Battlestar Galactica.

Well, i tried!!

I'd say most of the HBO shows are super top notch. I'm even digging "Big Love" right now.
If you like baseball, or just like to laugh your butt clean off, i'd recommend "Eastbound and Down."
"Walking Dead" is the best non-HBO show going now. It's on AMC on sunday nights.

Thanks

I think you'll like the complexity of Mulholland Dr. and I see something different in it each time I watch.

Even if I wanted to watch Big Love, I wouldn't be able to. Last week in between court hearings, I observed the big trial at the courthouse. It involved a local police officer who raped his 19 year old step daughter, while his wife and 4 year old child were in the bed. He did so while Big Love was on. Oh, and he did so by drugging his wife with Crystal Lite and drugging his step daughter with a glass of milk. Creepy? That's why I'll never be able to approach Big Love.

i'm actually looking at their top 1000 films list and making a document of the ones that look interesting. if it stays relatively sane and short, i'll post it here in a bit.

Well, it's understandable. Same reason i can't read "Catcher in the Rye" anymore, once i heard about Mark David ****man's obsession with it. Oh that and it's the most overrated book of all time. Evaarrrrrr!!!
I've been avoiding Big Love for 4 years, but after the season finale of "Boardwalk Empire" i was too pumped to go to bed, so i stayed up and watched Big Love. It was nine kinds of crazy and obviously picking up a show in the middle of the fifth season isn't usually the best idea. Regardless, i was intrigued enough to netflix season 1.

I'm curious as to what the actual drug was in the milk and crystal lite.

12 Angry Men

First Time Viewing

Like I said earlier tonight, someone on the site recommended it to me so I checked it out. And I can say I am very glad I did.

I knew the basic premise (guys in a jury trying to decide on a verdict) but I didn't know what to expect out of that.

I loved the way the story was told. It wasn't just the other jurors who needed to be convinced, it was the viewer, and that's how the movie went about it. A detail here, one there, eventually forming a larger and larger understanding of what LIKELY happened that night (Fonda's character makes dead certain to not say something did or didn't happen, only that its possible). It was a rather short movie (just over an hour and a half) so the pace moved pretty briskly, but it didn't feel rushed; it covered the ground it needed to cover and never overstayed its welcome.

The characters and the performances were all very strong. Each representing a very different man with no two too much alike. The most typical answer is probably that Fonda's character is a given person's favorite, and for this movie I'm going to agree with the most likely typical answer. He did a great job, I thought the best of the bunch, with his character and his character was also the most interesting for me. It's also worth noting that his character is dressed in a white suit.

My least favorite character was Juror #10, though that's only because I didn't like him...but he's not supposed to be a likable character; so its not that the character fails, on the contrary, it very much succeeds. One of the most "powerful" moments in the film is when
[Show spoiler]he is having his rant about "those" people and the other characters just each get up one at a time and walk away from the table with the exception of Juror #4 and Juror #7 (who turns away). The dead, awkward silence besides him speaking was just very unnerving and the actor played it very well reacting to it. It's also a nice touch that after Juror #4 tells him to not open his mouth again...he doesn't.

I really enjoyed the camera work of the film as well. I liked how it went on the shots were tighter and lower in relation to the actors, increasing the sense of close space and making the movie more claustrophobic if you will as things began to "ramp up" as it proceeded.

There wasn't a thing in the film that I didn't enjoy, it definitely fired on all cylinders and worked across the board. A fantastic film, and for anyone who hasn't seen it, I definitely recommend checking it out (don't want to rent it? It's on Youtube in very good quality, that's how I watched it).

Rating - 4.75/5

Well, I'll check back in about an hour and a half - two hours for a review then

Hopefully you enjoy it as much as I did

Word of advice...open all the tabs now so that the entire movie can load if you have a slower connection. You're not going to want to stop and wait between parts

Thanks

12 Angry Men

yeah, not gonna happen. i was semi interested in seeing the film, but by the 13 minute mark i was and shut it off. i used to never shut off films early. i used to finish everything i started, no matter how terrible, and while 12 Angry Men obviously isn't terrible, it was good enough to make me want to spend 90 minutes with it.

what pushed me over the limit was when
[Show spoiler]the 1 guy who says "not guilty" has no reason for saying it and "just wants to talk"
that made me go "ugh, oh crap. not gonna listen to this" and then turn it off. if i was in that room with him i would have already had a strong urge to beat him to death right then and there for wasting my time.

a film i was curious about because i heard it was very profound and had some great performances. however, i won't be able to judge that because i didn't make it that far. watched 13 minutes and knew this wasn't something i cared to watch any longer.

score:incomplete. did not / will not finish.

You picked the worst time to turn it off if that's the case!

It's still getting set up at that point. Trust me, they do more than "just talk". The others feel just as you do in the film at first...and some for most of the film.

All joking aside, is there something wrong? You just seem to not really want to watch anything, which is just odd.

[Show spoiler]If you aren't even in the mood to watch 500 Days of Summer, then I know something is really wrong.

that was literally 'lol' inducing

all that's on my schedule is The Big Bang Theory (again lol). no movies seem interesting right now. i stood in front of my collection and NOTHING seemed interesting i didn't even grab anything off the shelf and look at it! (like i sometimes do lol) i just kept looking over and going "no... no... nope... no... no... nuh uh... nope... no..." so i decided to watch some more of The Big Bang Theory. currently season 2 for about the 5th time

My diagnosis as a doctor (I'm not a doctor) is that you may just be burnt out on films for right now....that or you are just deeming everything uninteresting because of your infatuation with The Big Bang Theory
