I remember a while back that you had mentioned a sequence on how you power up each device. I was wondering maybe if I had to get my 600M recalibrated so I asked a few posts back how often are you supposed to get it done. Thanks
If you power on the OPPO BDP-83 last it has been my experience that the OPPO player will always correctly sync up to any A/V receiver and Pioneer monitor. Turning the OPPO player on first can sometimes result in the OPPO player outputting gray blacks do to some slight incompatibility during HDMI handshaking.

So the OPPO BDP-83 should always be powered on last and the blacks will be the deepest. I thought this issue improved with the latest OPPO firmware update.

Until someone develops a plasma or LCD display that has as good as picture or better then the Pioneer and is as reliable the prices will remain around double the price of the list price since supplies are limited.

So what would you suggest? Moving away from the 151? My 1st purchased was for $5600 and could pay 10-12k. Looking at limit of 4k and waited to go with a 60" if possible

In that price range I would suggest a PRO-101FD for around $3,000 or less. If you need 60 inches maybe a plasma or LCD display from some company in 2011 or 2012 might match or beat the Pioneer 9th generation 2008 technology. Maybe in 2012 if OLED becomes a reality we might have something that beats the Pioneer in terms of picture quality.

I hope you find what you’re looking for. I see a dealer on EBAY offering a PRO-101FD 50 inch brand new for around $2,800 but you should check what the warranty is.

That has been my experience as well, except with a BDP-80. Powering on the Oppo before turning on the panel, or having the panel set to another input and turning on the Oppo before switching to the blu-ray input, almost always results in the blacks not 'settling' to their deepest level. Turning the 101 on first and having it set to the correct input beforehand always results in correct blacks. Just a bizarre handshake issue.

I have the Pro-151FD. Is Film Mode-Advance suppose to work better with 1080p/24fps? I watch some old dvd's that my bd player outputs at 1080p/60 and some cable HD channels that are 1080i. Should Film Mode-Advance only be enabled for 1080p/24 content to upconvert to 1080p/72 ?

Doesn't Film Mode-Standard work better for 1080i and 1080p/60 content?

Advanced will convert everything to 72hz except 1080p/60 (which will be 60hz).
Standard will play everything at 60hz except 1080p/24 (which will be 72hz).
Off and Smooth will play everything at 60hz including 1080p/24.

IMO, Standard would be best due to less processing.

I always find it confusing how Pioneer describes the PureCinema settings:
1. Standard: automatically detects recorded image data when displaying DVD or high-definition images (e.g., movies) having 24 frames per second for smooth and vivid playback
This does not specify material being displayed at 72Hz so it sounds more like 3:2 pulldown would be engaged for material with native 24Hz playback

2. Advanced: converts theatre-quality images to 72 Hz when displaying DVD images (e.g., movies) having 24 frames per second for smooth and vivid playback
I don't think this converts everything to 72Hz, only material that is natively 24Hz. Thing is though, when under Advanced, I sometimes notice the ticker on ESPN stutter that otherwise is not there when PureCinema is set to off. The stutter also isn't always there which just makes things even more confusing.

I've also heard some say that even when set to Off, the display will engage 72Hz playback when it detects 1080p/24 signal. I kind of doubt this is the case as I notice slightly (very slight) smoother scrolling end credits on my Blu-rays when PureCinema is set to Advanced instead of Off. I currently leave PC set to Advanced.

That is mininformation which was unfortunately spread by many professional home theater reviews, only adding to the confusion (not just the 9g Kuros - on reviews of previous Pio models as well). Scweb described things correctly. PC must be set to standard or advance to get 72hz with a 1080p/24 signal.

It's no doubt that the manual is very confusing about it and not surprising that a lot of people get them mixed up. The test results that I linked show the truth.

I had the same problem when I first got the Oppo 83. In order to get it it to produce the deepest blacks and A/V sync, I just set my Harmony remote to turn the receiver on first, the the Kuro, then the Oppo. No more black issues, but I do have some A/V sync issues still. Not sure how to correct that.

Where are you options set to?

Enable all your safety features in the Options menu to Mode 2, like Side Mask detect etc.

Set screen size to Auto.

If all your settings are correct your probably seeing the edge of the screen. All TV's are like this. They leave a tiny bit of area on the sides so you know your getting the whole picture.

My 151 does this.

It's nowhere near an inch on my KRP-600 for full screen 16x9 content. Closer to 0.5 cm.
