JJ Abrams excessive use of lens flare and digitally added "camera sludge" (according to the extra features that is the official terminology) show up far to well on the blu-ray to the point where they are distracting. And some of the artifically added artifacts actually end up looking like compression artifacts at times.

During the scene where Amanda is fixing Spocks collar prior to him going before the elders for his admission to the science acadamy, there is what look to be a compression artifact in the form of a blue and red line that pops up for less than one second. It just jumps out and looks like a print problem. Reviewing the paused footage of the apparent artifact it has the characteristics of an optical light effect, in other words it was a deliberate addition but it is less than a second so looks like a print error.

Small examples like this show up from time to time and ruin what would have been a magnificent print to my eyes. The fault is entirely on JJ and his artistic choices. I love the addition of things that add to realism, but this has gone to far and ruined what I hoped would be a great experience. It doesn't look real, it looks artificial. It just went to far.

Issues with the picture aside, I can't fault the audio. It is top notch. And the extra features are fantastic. There's probably around 3 hours worth and the documentaries (complete with branching featurettes) are fascinating.

I loved this film. It would have been the perfect blu-ray for me if it were for how annoying the deliberate artifacts are.
You can't bring down points for picture quality if the transfer was an identical reproduction of the 2K master. Sure you don't like his shooting style but the transfer is still 5/5.

I'd rather have the digital copy. Anywhere I can watch the dvd, I can just watch the blu-ray, but being out and about and having Star Trek now on my Ipod Touch, that's pretty cool.

I haven't noticed that before, how did I miss that? man, can you take a screenshot of that as well then? I think by the end of the day you will be a professional photographer with all the photos you are having to take for Blu-ray.com

I posted these about a month ago in the screenshot thread. Figure I might as well post them here also.

Tyler Perry? Yes, in a small role. I can't imagine which of those photos you thought was Sean William Scott though.

The Eric Bana character *kinda* looks like Sean William Scott. Maybe that's who the poster was referring to? Dunno...

Hmm.. OK fair enough. I can kind of see it. Anyway, nope. It's Eric Bana (once again green). Have a good one.

Wow, I never would have guessed that was Eric Bana. Alright, thanks.

Still don't know whether or not to get this as a blind buy. If this came out a few weeks ago, no question I would have bought it. I've just spending a lot on movies lately that I know I enjoy. Best Buy's sale and Amazon matching has been killing my wallet!

Default Exactly what is...

A Steelbook BD edition? Is this a Best Buy only item? Is it simply a case design/material? I've seen it mentioned many times, but have no clue what it is!

It's a Canada/UK exclusive. It's a steel case for the movie, with different cover art

Default Save $10 on combined Star Trek purchase

Has anyone else wondered why the Best Buy deal this week, pre-order the new Trek and buy one of selected others on Blu, get $10 off.....why it doesn't incude any of the movie sets?

Wouldn't it make sense to offer $10 off the purchase of the new movie and a set that costs more than $17.49???

I don't know that I'd buy the Star Trek: The Original Motion Picture Collection. But I'd sure as heck grab the Star Trek: Motion Picture Trilogy.

I already own the Star Trek: The Next Generation Motion Picture Collection. But they should offer the $10 off any of the sets....maybe even the series'.

Too bad it's ONLINE ONLY, bet I could talk someone at the store into giving me the deal.

Oh, and since this thread isn't about pricing or deals....Um...how about that latest Trek film, huh? Pretty good, eh?

He was in this movie too?

I know he was in Tranformers 2, didn't know he was in Trek (at least I don't remember knowing that)
