So how is this season compared to the last couple? I don't have Showtime so I catch up on DVD, and I'll have to say that though season 4 was a step or two better than 3, it was still leagues behind the first two seasons, which were great.

Are there interesting characters outside of the main cast with depth, that aren't one-note (Eddie Nero, for example, was funny when first introduced but quickly, quickly became irritating). And with the main cast is there any development or is it the same old issues over and over and over that have been explored ad-nauseum? I'm all for hot chicks and etc. but I'd kinda want some story development, too.

This season is much better than last. I am enjoying it immensely. They added a few elements to it that really spice it up imho

I beg to differ. I laugh sometimes, but it really is the same thing over and over.

I'd have to agree with this statement. There have been a few very funny moments in the season but it's incredibly predictable at this point.

I laugh allot, but I agree we pretty much have the same thing over and over again (and maybe that's why it works so well with a majority of fans), hank messes up, downward spiral, moment of clarity, family likes him again, whats in store for next season.

I fully expected the Tyler/Kali encounter, but I thought it was going to happen when Hank opened up the bedroom door the first time, not the second. lmao @ Bates getting blown by his sponsor. Next week's finale should be interesting. Hope Tyler gets slaughtered.

Did not like this season of Californication at all, and consider it to be the worst by far. They had a chance to do something different with the jumping ahead 2 years and did not capitalize on that. Right after the first episode you can tell it was going to be the same ol same ol, and it was. Californication is a highly sexual show, always has been, always will be. But this year, it was absolutely nauseating. I am so tired of Runkle and his crazy sexcapades. Every character aside from Hank is so unlikeable. And Karen and Becca were at their worst. The only good episode was the cop ride along.

Other observations:

The episode RAW probably broke the record of the most useage of the word 'fvck' within 30 minutes

Kali subplot was boring, uninteresting, and went nowhere.

Tom Kapinos can't write female characters

Becca and Karen are biploar.

I enjoyed the season to an extent. Not the greatest stuff in the world, but far from the worst. I really dind't care for the finale at all, which is sad, because going in I thought it was going to be good. Makes me think back to how awesome the season 3 finale was. So great, yet sad.

Agreed, season 3 finale was something else. The ending in this finale was painfully tacked on. Just couldn't let Hank go on; had to throw that crazy chick back in there for no real reason other then to make it a forced cliffhanger.
