I have a lot in my collection that are still listed as new, but I have seen them on DVD or cable before, and just haven't got around to watching the blu yet.
I agree with the other poster who commented on this, watch Zodiac. It is probably one of the most underrated thrillers to come out in some time. Very good story, very well told, and the blu looks great.

I'm saving them for the right night. Criterions, Kinos, the rare high profile wide release (Tree of Life, Super 8, Annie Hall). If I have high expectations for a blind buy I don't just want to pop it in when I'm tired or cranky or might get distracted by the phone or whatnot. Nor do I want to pop it in just to get it over with. Those can sit for a while because either conditions or my mood aren't quite right.

Eh, I feel like something new. Notorious, Blue Thunder, Das Boot, Taps, Risky Business, The Shawshank Repemption,...I've got a lot of non-blind buys that were good pickups and I'm very glad I own them but they never quite make it off the shelf. If that seems silly or wasteful, Full Metal Jacket was in this group for almost two years before I finally watched it and let me tell you, I was very glad it was sitting there when I finally felt like popping it in.

The purchase prices was so cheap it's basically a really long term rental. These I will admit can be sketchy and many are going to sit unwatched for a veeerrrry long time but so what? They were really cheap and the nice little surprises in this group (The Other Guys, Invictus, Animal Kingdom) can make up for a lot of the flops.

I suppose I could stop buying new discs until I got caughhahahahahahahahahahahaha...I'm sorry, I really thought I could get all the way through that
I suppose I can buy that (no pun intended ). Back in the day, my DVD collection started to balloon skyward because I found it really hard to turn down a $5 sale on a movie that sounded good and had a few solid views in it.

And while there are definitely some movies that I can watch anytime (Back to the Future, Shawshank, Transformers, Casablanca, etc.), there are some that I need to be in the mood to watch. So I see what you mean.

Now I'm not going to step away from my fairly frugal ways and begin buying up any movies that I are on sale that I may watch some day, but I can at least see your side a bit.

I have yet to watch:

3:10 To Yuma
American History X
Babylon A.D.
Batman Begins
Blade Runner
Corpse Bride
Die Hard
Django Unchained
Ferris Bueller's Day Off
A Few Good Men
The Five Heartbeats
The Last Samurai
Man of Steel
My Cousin Vinny
No Country For Old Men
Primal Fear

If it wasn't for streaming, I would've already watched these films by now. I tend to favor watching movies through streaming apps like Hulu and Netflix because I know eventually certain titles will expire from the service.

Only three, since I don't buy a whole lot to begin with and so rarely even get blind buys.

* Mother's Boys - Jamie Lee Curtis fan and the DVD wasn't available to rent from Netflix, but I saw it was on Blu-ray and grabbed it.
* Ninja II: Shadow of a Tear - Really enjoyed the first one.
* Odd Thomas - Never read the book, but I'm a big Stephen Sommers fan.

I have "educated" blind buys that I've yet to watch but I've seen trailers or clips and I've read reviews. I haven't listed any of those below. I'm focusing on "total" blind buys, where I haven't seen a trailer and barely know anything about the film at all.

Here's what I know about The Hustler: it's got Paul Newman and Jackie Gleason, it involves pool hustlers, and it's very well-regarded by critics. I know literally nothing else about it and I've never seen a frame of footage from it. I was doing some binge buying a while back and the Digibook seemed appealing and it was on sale, so I grabbed it along with the sequel, about which I also know nothing.

Never seen these and know next to nothing about them. Threw them in my cart when I was picking up other Hammer Horror films like Countess Dracula, Twins of Evil, and The Vampire Lovers, which I was more familiar with.

Bought based on a recommendation from my sister. It's animated and it's called 9. My knowledge of it ends there.

Picked up recently in Walmart's $7.88 bin. An action movie with The Rock and Billy Bob Thornton? Sold.

Wife's been home more often lately after switching floors at her hospital, so I have been watching less. Lot's of blind-buys still on the docket as a result. The ones that stand out the most on the shelf at a glance are:

Automata - Bought for rental price, $4.99, so no risk. I love sci-fi, would buy damn near any sci-fi movie for that price.

Bullet to the Head - Bought it because of the director and star, and it was like $6 I think. After watching the Expendables movies and hating them though I am very wary of this one.

The Illusionist - Another rental price blind-buy, based on my love of Victorian settings and magic stories. Edward Norton is so hit-or-miss, will be interesting when I get to it.

Once Upon a Time in America - Somehow never saw this, despite it being an obvious choice for me since I love the genre, Leone and the films it inspired. Bought it hastily when the Warner version went OOP. It's so long it will take a while to find the right time to watch it.

Super 8 - Got it because I like Abrams' first Trek movie and I hear it's an 80's homage. Plus the Target metalpack was $10 with a lovely cover. Need to watch this soon.

I think pretty much the rest of my 500 or so BDs I have seen before, though many of them I haven't seen since VHS ruled the market. I rented so many VHS genre movies back in the day it's kind of insane, and a lot of my purchasing is of stuff I watched then but haven't seen since. The Dark Half, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, King of New York, Rabid, etc. etc. Lots of memories waiting to be seen again.
