Why is it not possible to create a new 5.1 (7.1?) mix using the original sound elements? I don't really care much for mono in terms of watching it in that setup, however if thats the only way to get the original audio, then ill have to watch it in mono. However I find it hard to comprehend why a new mix wasn't done using the original sounds...?

There are problems with the music as well, even though it was mastered directly from Brad Fiedel's master tapes (if memory serves). The cue which plays before the pipe bomb explodes in the tanker is inexplicably missing, and there's this creepy metallic scraping sound that plays over the main title music which is also gone. Companies like Chace have the right idea. Using the mono DME stems as the starting point, they first locate any stereo music recordings, and then conform them to the feature using the mono music as their guide. They then take the mono dialogue and effects tracks and run them through their own 'Digital Stereo' process, subtly steering the audio across the sound stage without adding any new elements. The end result may not be as bombastic as what some people want, but it allows for a decent multi-channel effect that is as true to the original as can be expected, instead of the 5.1 abomination we hear on The Terminator. The bane of my misery, (aside from poor subtitles on foreign titles), is badly done surround mixes. Either DO IT ALL, or leave it the f*** alone. Of coarse, include the original mix on the disc as well, but don't for the love of god, insert certain newly recorded effects and leave the rest as is. That bridge explosion at the end of The Good The Bad And The Ugly, sweet Jesus!

Im actually starting to wonder why I bother supporting Blu-ray so much.
I can't help feeling in an all-negative mood at the moment, as im getting really fedup with us in the UK getting next to sh*t when it comes to Blu-ray releases compared to other markets. If Warner isn't constantly screwing us over and releasing next to nothing in terms of catalogue titles in this country and also not even releasing oscar-winning new films on the format, Disney doesn't release new animated films such as Winnie the Pooh either, and now it looks like Fox are being crappy again. I was actually really happy that Fox were releasing The Terminator and Volcano and I have/had both pre-ordered. |

Why does it matter that there is no new transfer? The Terminator should have been released years ago in the UK, and like Andy said, it would easily sell. |

I want new transfer if I was OK with the lackluster current transfer which looks like a upscaled DVD then I would have bought US release ages ago. |

But most likely with a flimsy and nasty US case which you can put your thumb through.

For anyone here who cares, this is the fantastic reply I just got from Fox. Thank you for your recent enquiry.. We value your feedback and we do review potential Catalogue titles for release on DVD on an on-going basis and will forward your comments to our Catalogue Marketing team. In the meantime, we would suggest that you visit our website www.fox.co.uk / www.fox.com for updates on our upcoming releases. We would like to thank you for your feedback and interest in Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment titles and hope you continue to enjoy our future releases! Kind Regards, Patrick So it looks like they didn't actually read my email (I asked why they had been cancelled) and have just sent back a simple "copy and paste" job. |
