Open world does not necessarily mean a game will be good.
I agree that for missions, open world is not necessary. For high replay exploration though, which is what I love best about games, open world is something I'm drawn to most often. The freedom to go wherever you want and not have someone tell you where you can't go.

Sorry to hear it's not an open London to explore, but will keep 1886 on my radar just in case there is a bit of freedom to explore on the levels. The game does look promising.

One advantage to closed linear levels? Enhanced, highly detailed levels sometimes not possible in "watered down open world games" as a nod to linear games.

The Order 1886 is pretty much confirmed fall 2014.

“Things kick off again in a short few weeks with the launch of infamous Second Son, another great first party title starting to push the boundaries of what PS4 can do. We have Driveclub, again coming from our first party studios, and we have The Order 1886 coming later in the year. So that’s just a flavour of what our own studios are bringing out this year.”

Looks like just 2 weeks to go until we get a full on preview of the game from all the major gaming publications as the embargo get's lifted.

[No Multiplayer For The Order: 1886, Runs 30FPS & 1080P

Upcoming PlayStation 4 exclusive, The Order: 1886, won’t include online multiplayer according to Ready At Dawn Founder, Andrea Pessino.

The eagerly-anticipated shooter, set in an alternate Victorian London, has recently been in the press spotlight as we -presumably- approach a new announcement.

When questioned on Twitter about the status of multiplayer Pessino stressed that 1886 is a cinematic, third person experience suited for singleplayer. This could well mean that co-op is also off the table despite The Order being centred around four lead characters.

Elsewhere it has also been confirmed that the game will run at 30FPS & 1080p. In an interview with Play3, Ready At Dawn’s Ru Weerasuriya said, “in favour of spectacular effects and the highest resolution we restrict ourselves to a fluid 30 frames per second

That blows. This game seemed made for MP. Guess I'll wait for a price drop.

Really happy about no MP! Hopefully there's co-op tho. Even still, this game is probably gonna be a beast. This looks like Sony's answer to Gears of War.

Happy this game has no MP. Now they can focus on just SP. Also hate MP trophies that I'll never be able to get.

First Infamous and now The Order. I'm glad that developers still recognize that a quality single player experience is enough without the need to tack on some half-baked MP feature.

From what I take from that article means no MP period, including co-op. Also if there is no competitive MP, this can't be Sony's answer to Gears. Gears is all about competitive MP, which this game doesn't have.

Sony already answered Gears and gave us Uncharted

I'm glad of no MP but I would imagine there would be some sort of Co-Op if the story consists of 4 playable characters

Can't argue with the MP aspect, but I always enjoyed Gears for the campaign too. This just seems similar because you have a squad you're rolling with and you're battling hordes of creatures, with futuristic weapons.

Why is it funny?

Uncharted is a TPS with cover mechanism, and its sales (on 2 and 3) have been competitive with GeoW 2& 3.

In all logic, Sony has the following franchises meant to bolster its lineup

FPS: Killzone (is not competitive with Halo, clearly, but doing "ok")
TPS: Uncharted (competitive with GeoW @ 5-6 m units per, just less front heavy)
TP Slasher: God of War (vs Probably Ryse)
Driving Sim: Gran Turismo (leader in sales vs Forza until GT6)
Driving Arcade: Drive Club (big unknown still to this day, but visibly meant to compete with Forza Horizon)
Platformer: Little Big Planet (no real competition unless counting the Play/ create/ share model which is then meant to be Spark)
Sports: MLB The Show (No competition atm that I know of)
RPG: ?? (vs Fable, an established franchise on Xbox. Suposedly SCEJ is supposed to be working on a big RPG, to be seen)
Open World/ Action: Infamous (Unknown. Possibly Dead Rising if MS keeps the franchise exclusive through some weird deal with Capcom)

I leave The Last of Us and many other "one shots" (like the Quantic Dreams titles which are all meant to be a lone entry at least so far, or the odd third party exclusives like Valkyria Chronicles or more recently Deep Down) out, because we do not quite yet know that they will become actual franchises for sure.
The big unknown, and I think one that Sony is apprently betting a lot on, is the Order. It is supposed (if successful) to become a tentpole franchise with declinations over several sequels/ prequels and multiple medias (Film? TV? Books? Mobile gaming?)
