What are they going to do about the inevitable boxset release for the new trilogy, will Rouge One be counted within, or will it be placed separately with other spin-off's.

Probably separately - there is no need for these movies to be called Episode 4.5 or something like that!

Does anyone like the idea of spin-offs having the same format as 300: Rise of an Empire in a way that the movie took place before, during and after the events in Snyder's 300, maybe even using some footage from the OT (which could be problematic to copy the exact same style as the 1970s/1980s OT)?

I find it hard to get mad about "milking" honestly. People want more Star Wars, otherwise they wouldn't make much money. Consumers control everything in capitalism. People want Star Wars, Disney releases more Star Wars. People don't, Disney won't. That simple.

And I am not speaking for myself, I usually hate sequels and am very wary of the franchise focus in movies today.

And which beloved movie characters have only one movie anyway? Are there any?

They didn't shut down the new trilogy.

I mean, a ton, but I think you're trying to say anything beloved is going to get a sequel pass from the studio and I think that's correct.

As long as they deliver with all of these films, I don't care how many they make. The more Star Wars, the better.

...and to the bottom of the well we get.
Why do we need an origin story for Han Solo? or Bobba Fett?

Default Some Rogue One Concept Art Info

Less than 24 hours after the unveiling of the first Star Wars spinoff (Star Wars: Rogue One), some details about the project are already surfacing from a described piece of concept art.

Slashfilm notes that at the shareholder demonstration unveiling the the film, there’s a bit of concept art that’s been seen (but not leaked). According to the writer, this image has the following attributes:

The concept art was a gritty “dark/gray image”: “very dark and done in greens, so it evoked the idea that it was being done under the cloak of night.”

The art showed 4-5 armored, soldier-like persons on the ground, “with two to three ships in the background.”

Disney blogger/investor StitchKingdom says that the imagery “evoked concept art of a video game” and it “screamed Halo to me.”

“Dozens of figures in fatigues appeared to be storming something with a strange helicopterish vehicle (open on the sides) in the background, releasing more troops.”There were tough-looking vehicles too.

The ships were fairly dark, and in the background.

They weren’t obviously X-Wing Fighters, which our sources would have recognized.

They “seemed a bit bigger than X-Wings more like a transport ship of sorts” but probably not as big as the Tantive IV (the transport ship we see Darth Vader board at the beginning of A New Hope).

The characters were all “generic” looking “wearing the same dark outfit.” “I didn’t see anything that would distinguish them as individuals.”

When asked LA Times reporter Daniel Miller if they looked more like Rebel Alliance fighters in orange jumpsuits or a band of bounty hunters, he replied: “Neither. They were masked but not whimsical looking like those bounty hunters

You guys can hate and call it milking. If someone walked up to me and said I will give you 4 BILLION cash for your business. I probably wouldn't check the internet much since I would be sitting on my own private island where my wifi reception is shotty.

I don't understand people. Nobody complains about a studio releasing a 1 hour show (like Game of Thrones) every week for months at a time, but when someone else (like Disney) wants to release two or three 2-hour Star Wars movies a year, all of a sudden that is considered "milking" and "too much".

Alexandre Desplat to Score Star Wars Standalone Film Rogue One!

Quote:
Alexandre Desplat to Score Star Wars Standalone Film Rogue One!
BY MAX EVRY ON MARCH 16, 2015

Recent Academy Award-winning composer Alexandre Desplat (The Grand Budapest Hotel) told French program Radio Classique’s Culture Club (via Film Music Reporter) that he will take on scoring duties for Disney and Lucasfilm’s first “Star Wars” standalone film, titled Rogue One.

This will reteam Desplat with director Gareth Edwards, for whom he composed the music for last year’s blockbuster Godzilla. Set to star Academy Award-nominee Felicity Jones (The Theory of Everything), Rogue One is based on an idea by ILM CCO John Knoll with a screenplay by Chris Weitz, and is set to begin shooting this summer in London to debut in theaters on December 16, 2016.

Knoll will executive produce along with Simon Emanuel (The Dark Knight Rises, Fast & Furious 6) and Jason McGatlin (Tintin, War of the Worlds). Kathleen Kennedy and Tony To (“Band of Brothers,” “The Pacific”) are on board to produce and John Swartz (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) will co-produce.

Besides his regular work with Wes Anderson, the prolific Desplat is also known for such blockbusters as both parts of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows as well as three pictures for Weitz as director (The Golden Compass, The Twilight Saga: New Moon, A Better Life). In addition to winning for The Grand Budapest Hotel, he also received an Oscar nomination for The Imitation Game.

This is good news. The best composer with a classical sensibility still going who isn't John Williams.

Game of Thrones' seasons are legitimate adaptations of the source material. If each character got a spin-off series, then it would be considered milking it.

Disney will have to be careful that they don't overplay their conceptions of fan interest with the Star Wars franchise, luckily for us everything isn't aimed at the same demographic, so whilst it's annoying to be bombarded with kiddie shows and merchandise, they're easy enough to ignore. Unless of course, they're cool ...

I like the idea of a few spin-off movies but I'm concerned the quality of these movies may not be up to scratch. Fast food quick fire CGI popcorn flicks directed by different people churned out year after year where the continuity can quickly get all convoluted. I don't really want Star Wars to turn into a Fast and Furious type franchise.

While some are better than others I haven not been let down or felt I wasted my time or money with a Marvel film. I have faith Disney knows what they are doing with what Lucasfilm wants to put out. So far all we have are a bunch of announcements. If the new films are as much fun as the new Marvel comics I will be pleased.

Well I think his point is that we still have this conception that a film series is a stark contrast (see what I did there, dur-hur) to a television series, in that a television series naturally produces more content more quickly, because... reasons?

Growing up in the 80's and 90's you had a film come out, and if it was popular, you'd get a sequel in 2 to 3 years. And usually after 2 or 3 films the franchise would feel "stale" I guess, like say, the Lethal Weapon films.

I think the first films to really challenge this notion was the Harry Potter series. I don't I'd ever seen a wildly popular and successful fourth film in a series, let alone a SEVENTH one at that point. And I know they're based on novels but it was still unprecedented.

And of course with Marvel we now have a continually ongoing series of films that hasn't lost any of it's interest or popularity that. Star Wars could easily be the same, as long as the films are good.

The only thing that surprises me about the quantity of films in franchises these days is even proportionately "ordinary" budgets on movies eclipse everything else, so how can movies get more expensive and yet more frequently released? It seems impossible but there you go.

Not to sidetrack things but the fourth Bond movie - Thunderball - raked in $140M in 1965...that's a little over a billion dollars after adjusting for inflation.

Bond has been crazy popular from the beginning.

Carry on

Some of that is due to simple inflation. Holding everything else equal a movie that cost $50M to make in 1995 would cost $75M today.

Increased access to and exploitation of foreign markets is probably a big factor - if not the biggest factor - in exploding budgets too. The pie is a lot bigger than it used to be and everybody involved knows it.
